12/27 - Rashad Vaughn will NOT attend the U

Getting waaaaaay ahead of myself here, but if Vaughn does end up signing aboard, we are definitely sporting a 3-guard set, and it's bombs away, baby.

Getting Vaughn to commit early could help start a recruiting avalanche that some of us on here may never recover from. :)

I like recruiting avalanche's. Well, the Rashad Vaughn types, not the Miles Webb and Kerry Wooldridge types.

If Rashad indeed wants to be "the man", maybe our chances of getting him go up if Tyus decides to go elsewhere.

Conversely, if Rashad commits first, the chances of getting Tyus/Okafor go up. Tyus doesn't want to be "the man".

If Tyus were to come here, it would mean he had a change of heart about playing with Okafor in college, its been well publicized that okafor does not want to play here and won't give minnesota the light of day, even Tyus couldn't get him to listen to Minnesota, its also been well reported that Tyus and Okafor still want to play together in college, which means its unlikely Tyus comes to Minnesota, I have personally given up hope he comes here, and the number 1 reason is because of his relationship with Okafor, I am not going knock on him like some people have for wanting to play with okafor. who are we to say who he should befriend and who he should play basketball with, its his life, his decision. I might get bashed for this but I would rather have Vaughn than Tyus personally. Vaughn would be a more of a go to guy than Tyus down the stretch when the game is on the line in my opinion

Yep, we talked about this earlier in this thread. Rashad seems to be cut from the MJ, Bird, Malone, Magic cloth much more than the current players. You could see it in his answers about why he is playing elsewhere. I really like that kind of cockiness/swagger (are the kids still saying swagger?), in a a SG. You see it in Dre a bit. I don't think Rashad thinks there is a player in the country who can defend him and he's probably right. It's like with a WR, every good WR thinks he is always open, every good SG thinks he always has a mismatch.

I hope this thread doesn't degrade into a Rashad or Tyus thing. If Rashad comes here, regardless of anything to do with Tyus, it's a HUGE day for Gopher basketball.

love it

It's pretty comical that people think this, all because he seems to want to play with a close friend who also happens to be a top basketball recruit like himself.

I've been big on Rashad since I first found out about him. This is a bit stalker-y, but on his twitter page he has a link where he answers some questions posed to him.

The swag you refer to really comes out in a couple of answers. For example, Q: Favorite NBA player?; A: Lol I dont have one, and then Q: Why not team up with Tyus and Reid at Pulley?; A: For what?

Pretty swaggerific young man. Love the confidence

Edit: Here's the tweet I referred to <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Nice.

Yep, he always seems respectful but I love that his answers seem "Kobe-ish".

I hope his attitude is nothing like Kobe's.

Yeah who wants to have an attitude like Kobe, MJ, or Wade. They suck! I mean they only have 13 championships between them, are basketball icons and have sold more jerseys than you could imagine. But screw those guys!!!! They are the worst!

Tim Grover (the trainer for all three) refers to them as "cleaners" and they are absolutely people you want on your team. If Rashad scores 81 for the Gophers some day, I won't even google where the line to complain is.

If his attitude is like Kobe, an he has that confidence. I hope he signs yesterday.

If Rashad ever drops quotes like "Boos don't block dunks" or "I played T-Mac. I cooked him. Roasted him. Wasn't even close" or "They should be watching me" or "if you see me in a fight with a bear. Pray for the bear"

Well, I want that kid on my team. After a season where all we did was complain about lack of confidence, Rashad Vaughn would be awesome.

Essentially, the article says it appears we "rocketed" into contentention for Rashad. They go on to say that it shouldn't be a huge surprise because he is a home grown talent other than our history wouldn't indicate we can out recruit the big guns. They give credit to Pitino for making inroads. The finish up by mentioning the state is loaded in 2014 and this would be a big get for Pitino. If he gets more than one of the big three, his recruiting acumen will endear him to Minnesota (my words).

It's sad, but if he gets one of the Big 3, he worked wonders.

I don't know how credible but we could have to wait a year.

Why would we have to wait a year? He'd be going there for his senior year.

IMO, this is a bad development for us. If he leaves the State, it gets him accustomed to being away, may lose some of the hometown pressure, etc.

To add to your post, the words "serious contention," "serious inroads towards landing," and "a frontrunner" are in the Insider article, along with the Joel Francisco post that was already posted earlier in the thread. They say TJ is probably out of reach but think Vaughn and Travis are definitely in play for the Gophers.

Huntington Prep is in West Virginia. He's going to get homesick.

I guess you are right. I was thinking he would be there for his fifth year of high school.

Hope is his the first commit so we can get this 2014 thing going!

As I said in JP's thread, if we take 4 from the class of 2014 I wouldn't worry about overlap between JP and Rashad at the same position. He could redshirt or play as a freshman, but Rashad will be here one year, maybe two.
How do you know he will be a one or two year player? Just curious? I do not know, but have the majority of the #10-15 type guys in HS only played one or two years?
