Your last statement is accurate, it will be difficult for any coach. However "IMO, Coach Johnson was unfairly put in a position where he is expected to bring in more quality MN players than any recent coach. But he has accepted that challenge." Unfairly? He wasn't promoted from within...
If that's the case, the process is broken. You don't hire BJ without the understanding that Thorson may be the choice for a top assistant. Or at very least, it should have been talked about as possible and cleared up already.
If this is the basketball version of the Woog years I’m done. Coach needs the best players from MN. But not all players. This is where his strength for talent evaluation comes into play.
I would hope that we still bring in the Mason/Murphy’s of the world as well. But we can obviously use...
I don’t think we should expect the 2021-22 squad to resemble what Coach Johnson envisions long term. Like many first year coaches he just needs bodies the first year. As such, will we take a guard that is not a great shooter but has other intangibles? Of course. I’m guessing more targeted...
Funny how negative folks get on a player when we says he’s leaving. Dude was solid and will be missed. So much potential. No surprise. He’s a Pitino guy. He’d probably never heard of Johnson until last week. This Happens with coaching changes. Excited to see who Johnson lures here.
Good lord! We are not getting Chet this year.. but I do hope that during Coach Johnson's tenure we land a few of these Blue Chips from MN. No all of them obviously, but no 0 fer as well. That should be a reasonable expectation and one of the reasons he was hired.
Almost a lock that Mash and Carr are gone. Even if we get one or two nice players in the portal, it’s safe to have low expectations next year. If we exceed, awesome. Year 2 is when we should expect more IMO. Is what it is!
We have the local recruiting covered with the head man. Whoever is added to staff should not be redundant. I hope we find someone that has good contacts in a region not covered by Ben.
Coach Johnson has my full support. I'll admit to being a little disappointed as I know there were other established head coaches that wanted this job, but at the end of the day, Ben is our coach now and I am 100% behind him. Lets go Gophers and Coach Johnson!
I'd be shocked to see him get Mash to stay (assume Carr turns pro, but not expecting him back). For as much as we're all bashing Pitino's recruiting, he was decent with out of state talent and Mash is 100% a Pitino recruit. Would think the Johnson hire didn't excite him. If Johnson gets him...
Have no idea if this rumor is true or not, but to the point of Coach Johnson moving on that's ridiculous. One of the best players out of Minnesota in a decade or more (that is saying something), you 100% reach out even if 0...1% chance. Especially if your MO is recruiting.
Saunders was in way over his head. Team looks 100% better after he was fired. National media is talking about how much more organized Wolves look without Saunders.
As for comparison to Johnson. That’s not fair until we see Ben coach in games. Getting the players is half the battle. Need to...
Pretty brutal Friday matchup no matter how you slice it. That said, I am certain almost all of the programs ahead of us DON'T want to see the Gophers as their Friday matchup as well. Cuts both ways.
This is precisely why its more important for us (Minnesota). A chance to nap a top 10, let alone, number 1 ranked player in our back yard doesn't happen every year. At some point, we need to land one of these blue chip backyard guys. Rickert was basically the last player I remember landing...
