2025 Transfer Portal Watch

I think the tough part for some is putting their faith in Medved to actually assemble a good roster from the portal after watching Johnson fail to get it done the past few seasons.

There is zero reason to panic right now, Medved has been here a little over a week and there are still a ridiculous number of players uncommitted in the portal with more going in every day.
I choose to put faith in him until I'm proven otherwise. I think part of CBJ's issue was he didn’t have an offensive system, so he couldn’t really go after players that fit it, and players didnt want to play here because they couldnt really predict wtf they were gonna be asked to do. Medved has a system and a player type he likes.

13 minutes per game 3 pts, 3 boards at Butler? I mean sure but that's certainly a guy that would be pretty far down the bench barring improvement.
8 spot for us. Probably about 10-15 minutes per game for us. His minutes jumped up towards the end of the season. We need a couple big bodies eventually and I think he will be one.

Who's a better player?
At the end of the day it doesn't matter. Payne is following Buzz so why should we care. I get the arguments both ways. Payne is a better player, he is physical, can get some tough buckets and is a good defender (if he doesn't get into foul trouble).

Personally, I have moved on from Payne. I didn't like his attitude when he was here, he had injury issues, and like a lot of people said he is a center straight out of the 90s. Personally I want a 5 spot that is better at passing and shooting. I also thing with the $$$ Payne will command it would hamstring us. I'd compare it to paying Adrian Peterson so much money back in the day. Great player, could win you games, but tough to build around him with more than average salary going to the running back position.

This is where I am at as well, but I know that is tough for some people.

All we can really do as fans is let the process play out and see where the team is at when the dust settles. Unlike Johnson, Medved has a track record of putting together competitive rosters so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what happens.

I agree with you and I don't necessarily think Payne fits Niko's past teams.

We can't afford a player like Payne and thats the main issue. I'm of the opinion that we don't have the financial resources to compete with our peers in the B1G and nothing that has happened the last 2 weeks has changed that opinion. I'm hoping to be proven wrong.

I am a lot less worried about that this year. Revenue sharing helps bridge the gap a lot for us. Medved will also help raise the NIL floor that we have had the last couple years. Lets find players that fit the system and get more depth.

I think Medved does a better job than Ben with developing his bench and has a longer leash to help players grow and ultimately stay with the program.

The quibble I have with this is that even though MN may be less flush with resources than others in the league, I don't think that means you can't compete on the court (and the reverse is true, too - Indiana this year is a great example). Does it make it harder? Yep. But that's why you hire a guy who has proven he can mold a team into more than the sum of its parts. These kinds of teams have a lower ceiling than the big spenders, but those teams don't always come close to their ceiling either.

LOL

You're not this dumb stop it. Payne played on a top 18 team and played on a conference where 14 teams made the tournament. There is no comparison between the 2 and that's alright. Not to mention they don't even play the same position.

So what? Payne averaged pretty much the same in the SEC as he did in the B1G.

This year - Wisconsin's best player came from the Mountain West and developed under Niko. Texas Tech's best player came from the Mountain West. One of Kentucky's good starters came from the Mountain West. Yet all of their numbers improved despite moving up to the B1G/SEC. Next year UCLA's best player will likely be Dent from the Mountain West. These are just examples off the top of my head and I'm sure I'm missing many more over the last several years.

It's not a significant jump.

I almost forgot Tonje developed under Medved. For schnitz and giggle I looked up his transfer ranking from on3 last year and here’s what I got.

3 star 377 overall. We put too much weight into these ranking services. Some on here would have been bitching about how he’s a bench player at best

We need a big dude, and he does have the rare ability to shoot better from the field than the free throw line. I trust he's on the board in the War Room. :)

You would think by now people would have figured the part in bold out but there are still way too many people out there that look at these rankings and treat them like they are always correct.

Looking at 247 - Elijah Hawkins didn't even get a transfer rating when he came in. Mike Mitchell's transfer rating was higher then Dawson Garcia's.

Recruiting rankings should be used for entertainment purposes only....the sites are right a lot and they are wrong a lot. In the end they are trying to do the impossible task of ranking thousands of players in relation to each other....there is simply no possible way that can be done with any sort of guaranteed accuracy.

Ryan James reports there is mutual interest with Heide. We'll see where it goes.
Heide seems like a solid pickup if we can get him and not just because of the one of us angle.

He hit 10 of his final 16 - 3 pointers during the BTT and NCAA tournament and was a key rotational piece on a very good team. Also has a few years left to play which is an added bonus. Hopefully it happens.

Just like when we got Hawkins.

These sites have really have figured out the key to success. Have absolutely no requirement to be right about anything they post.... and still make money for it. It's wild.

Well said! I think some of that can be due to naivete about the complexity of the task, the limitations (both in personnel and resources) of the people doing the ratings, and the overall quality of information posted on the web.
