Call me a dreamer if you must, but I aspire to greater things for this program than settling for 9th place conference finishes and being a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament once every 3 to 4 years. Maybe we won’t reach the success of a Wisconsin, but we definitely won’t if Coyle is afraid to take the shot.

People have to move the goalposts going from 10 to 11 to 12 to 14 to 18 teams in the conference. 18 team conference meaning you finish in the top half and you are going dancing. Other than the 1997 team, Clem was always a bubble team.

Success here is bubble or better. It's not jumping to compete for winning the league. They only happens if you pay way more than the school ever has or ever will.

Should Charles be judged by the full body of his journalism or only by each piece he writes? Write a good piece, keep the job. Write a bad piece, get fired.
Or, should the full body of work be what the manager uses to decide whether to keep him?
If Charles averages only 1/3 good articles to 2/3 bad articles, would the manager be more than justified in firing Marcus and hiring a new journalist?

Marcus, what do you think? Is the whole of your work the means by which you are judged or should the manager only judge you by your last article?

I mean this seals it right.....Ben is 100% getting fired.

Holy crap Shooter needs to retire. The victories over UCA and UCLA were great but they were followed by a home loss to a bad Penn State team.....and the team is battling to just not miss the BTT.

If we had to conduct a poll as to who is a worse at their current job - Ben Johnson or Charley Walters......I actually think Shooter might win.

Cherry picking two games out of a disastrous four-year run...in a season where the AD set the bar at NCAA tournament qualification...SMH

If Coyle indeed moves the goalposts from the NCAAs to what we're experiencing--a wildly inconsistent season, barely making the conference tournament field, with a few upsets--that's a slap in the face to the fan base. The fans of this team aren't stupid. They know the potential of this program under the right leadership, and they know what well-coached basketball looks like. I don't doubt Coyle is getting an earful from longer-tenured and well-heeled fans, including what it would take to increase donations and NIL initiatives. Hint: nobody is telling Coyle that keeping Johnson will loosen up their wallets. That as much as anything is what gives me hope for a necessary change.

It's a fair question, and it's what I posted in the other thread. BleedGopher said it better that I ever could, so read his reply to the thread about what a reasonable expectation of this program should be. There's no logical and rational reason why this program can't accomplish what the Badgers and Hawkeyes have over the years.

To me the Iowa/Wisconsin benchmark is a great one. If it can be done at either of those schools there is no reason a similar level of success can't be accomplished here.

Absolutely thank you that’s what I’ve been saying. I’m not asking to compete for final fours every year, but we should be able to keep up with Wisconsin and Iowa year in and year out

This is really f-ing annoying that so many media types are calling for him to retain his job. Ben Johnson has not done A SINGLE THING at even a sub-par level since he's been here. I would go back to monson in a heartbeat over this nonsense.

Agreed. And there is no reason we can't reach WI success. That is all about the coaches they have had, not any built in advantages.

That said, we should be realistic and willing to walk before we run. The good news is that our footholds will be sturdy. In other words, any Big Ten job is sought after and valued. It's exceedingly rare for Big Ten teams to have their coach poached. If we find the right guy, we'll almost certainly be able to retain him.

If we finish top half of the conference consistently (which 9th place is), I think we're making the tourney more than every 3 to 4 years

Gophers are somehow 1-3 vs the top three teams in the conference.

Also, 1-2 vs the bottom three teams. With a good chance of being 1-3.

If Ben won 1/3 of his B1G games he'd almost be assured to get another year. Sadly he's well short of that high bar.

Doogies been playing the same song. The LA wins "seal the deal" and the revenue sharing is some huge change that will make it easier for Poor Ben to recruit. Even though every power 5 team will get the same revenue sharing.

But we might not lose to North Texas next year! Just think about Ben's non-conference dominance once he gets revenue sharing. He might still have a 20% win rate in conference, but who really cares?! Not Marcus, or Lavelle, or Doogie, or Shooter apparently.

He would have a better record yes. Still likely not a very good record, but I would bet he has more wins than Ben. (and likely gets fired like Ben as well)

Doogie is just about as big a waste of time as Shooter. But it is interesting to see how some of the local hacks are so gung ho to just completely ignore the first part of the season now that the team has been playing a little better overall.

I get that we have had some nice wins during the Big Ten season but that doesn't erase the fact that we are 6-10 in conference play so far and most of the loses have not been close games at all.

And yeah, the revenue sharing angle is an unknown factor for next year and beyond that alone doesn't justify giving Johnson another shot to build the roster when his other attempts to this point having come close to producing a truly good team.
