Pitino: Dre Mathieu was MVP of today's scrimmage

Dre Mathieu this kid is going to have a great year with the new rules... I think he will end up being the best player on this years team.

I think Dre M will quickly move ahead of Mav in the rotation. Having Mav at the 2 will help and he has become a good 3pt shooter, however he is a poor ball handler and is not real quick which will not help in Coach P's uptempo style.

I also predicted Devron Bostick would lead the team in scoring his jr year, so take it for what it's worth.

Sorry. I'm lame. What are the new rules? Is this the flopping stuff? Advantage offense?

I don't have a problem with Mav, but if he's better than our 5th guard we're in trouble, and 6th would be best. McNeil needs to beat him out, the sooner the better. We're going to go guard heavy and small, and I don't believe it's possible for Mav to graduate an average B1G player.

Some of you are getting a little ahead of yourselves on Mathieu. But, that's some of the fun of preseason I suppose...

The rules about hands and 2 hands on the dribbler,, armbar or u start getting beat by quicker guys and you put out your forearm to slow him down these are all fouls now... so quick guards that can beat there guy of the dribble is going to have a lot of freedom or there will be getting fouled and going to the line..

We need a rebounding presence at the 4. Whoever steps up to be that guy will get major minutes.

Because it's a little insane to think he's going to be better than Andre. If he is, we're up there for the best backcourt in the country when you factor in Smith as well. I think you're overestimating the value of one scrimmage and a rule change.

Nope ...why? good then you should be pretty impressed by this kid.

And it doesn't have to be a banger. Could be a Dusty Rychart.

If we had Dusty on this team, we'd be positioned to make a deep run. Dusty was an exceptional college player. I think he gets underestimated because he plied his trade during the bad ol' years.

Players like King should watch tape of Dusty Rychart. He's pretty much the template of a non-athletic but skilled scorer who can be the type of inside-outside forward that presents match-up problems for defenses.

That's what fans do. Oh. You wouldn't understand then.

Gee, I'm super excited to click that link below your comment. I'm really glad GopherHole offers you a place to broadcast your blog.

Nobody will like it but I still think Oto is the realistic 4 canidate that could provide some rebounding. But unless he can shoot just a little it will be hard to put him on the floor.

It is becasue everybody is worshipping Richard right now for a reason that....... If Richard says that sky is pink, many of the posters here will say yes they had seen seen the pink sky lately.

Haven't you heard his nickname? Oto-matic. Of course he can shoot!

In all seriousness, we may need Oto to provide some minutes this year. He's at least a decent athlete who, like you said, can rebound a little and mix it up. Either him, Buggs, or Wally (as a small 4) will have to give King a breather every once in a while. Sadly Oto has by far the most game experience between those 3.

You're still mad he's the coach instead of a certain someone else. Time to get over it.

I've been saying this since last season. Under Tubby's 1/2 court system there was zero doubt in my mind that Oto would have started because you must have rebounding & Oto's the only 4 we have that's halfway rugged.

Pitino's system relies less on the traditional 4 & that hurts Oto but you still have to have some rebounding & after Elliot what do we have?

- Buggs is not now & never will be a rebounder (imo). He's a 2 in a 4's body. He likes to shoot jumpers, run in transition & block some shots. Not to say he won't be a great player, he'll just never be a rebounding power forward.

- Joey King also is a shooting 4 but from what I've heard he's not soft & allegedly has a bit of attitude. If channeled properly perhaps he could help with rebounding although this past scrimmage indicates he has no intention of filling that role.

- We're hurting for muscle & rebounding so badly that we're now experimenting with Wally Ellenson at the 4 & he's only 6'4".

Considering all of this I don't think it's a stretch at all to say Oto will get plenty of minutes.

Wally definitely gew. He still would be undersized for a 4, but he is not 6'4" anymore. Closer to 6'6".

He's listed as 6'6". I think with his leaping ability he will be able to snag some rebounds at the 4 if he can learn to position himself well. However, I'm excited to see what he can do regardless of which position he's playing.

I got over it long time ago. That ceratin coach is doing very well in TT. I am being realistic here. You tell me if I am not. Richard has not coached a game here but is being treated here like a god. I think it is crazy.

You mean like how Tubby has not coached a game at TT yet is "doing very well"?

BTW, this is not an anti-Tubby comment, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

I remember a while back he called out a poster for saying Pitino is doing well so far while adding that Tubby is doing extremely well so far at Texas Tech. This guy is no stranger to hypocricy when it comes to Tubby. It's incredible how biased he is. I also don't buy for one second that he is a fan of the Gophers. He's keeping tabs on us hoping Pitino fails so it makes his idol look better. Notice he only posts to defend Tubby or bash Pitino/people who support Pitino.

TS is doing very well at TT with no games coached, but complaining about Coach P who hasn't coached a game yet either? Truth, me thinks you is cornfused!!!
