It's always hard to tell from highlight videos, but he appears to be pretty athletic and has a decent jumper. Does anyone know where we stand with him? I hadn't heard about him before today. Also according to Yahoo it looks like he has offers from Harvard and Northwestern and some other academic powers, so he's probably a pretty smart kid.
 

So the Gophers have about 22 offers out there. Does anyone know if certain players have a waiting offer on the table in a first come-first serve basis and other lesser players actually have contingency offers stating if the higher rated players go elsewhere then you can take the offer? My guess is there must be that type of jockeying going on.

I doubt there are many, if any, contingency offers out there. Just about all of our offers are to 4 and 5 star players. Those are the sort of players you take first come first serve no matter what.

I was wondering this as well. I have no idea whether coaches can do this.

What is the specific question? Maybe this will help: rarely are offers more than an "understanding". What one kid may call "an offer", a coach may not at all consider an offer. Everything is negotiable.

So you have a wide range of situations.. lots of times it's going to be, "we'd love to have you here at school ABC... " but the situation is fluid and can change quickly and without notice. Depends on the specific recruit and specific school. Communication becomes key.

For example, there are people a school might kind of "hold off"... "we'd like you to be here.. but have some things going on.. so there's a yellow light for now.. let's keep in touch"... and there are kids who even if you've got 15 guys already penciled in for next year's roster between expected returners and "committed" preps, you might tell, "I don't care what our situation is. If you want to be here, we want you here. We'll figure it out."

So some of our lower-tiered offers for 2014 can be a sort of conditional offer. That is, Pitino is expressing interest but is holding off for the top-tier players? Do you expect that's the case with a guy like JP (or maybe some of the lower targets we have) considering we have some serious interest in a lot of other better players (SGs in particular)?
 

I don't understand why this is such a difficult concept for fellow fans.

All of those guards have the gophers in real consideration right now, and I've got to think we land 2-4 guards from that list. (I'll guess 3) It really is a testament to the great work Pitino is doing on the recruiting trail.

I think there are committable offers and then there are other guys that you tell something like "we want to see more of you through next spring" (with the implication there would be an offer at that point if they haven't made a decision). Of course you'd take anyone with a committable offer, but you're playing them off each other, saying we'll take the first to commit to have some leverage to push guys to decide earlier.

It's a tough concept because the definition of "offer," taken from dictionary.com is: "to present for acceptance or rejection."

Nothing in that suggests a contingency. That is, it is all-or-nothing, not in between. However, if the word "offer" were coupled with "contingent," or "option" it may add some clarity by modifying the word's normal meaning.

Is English a difficult concept for you to grasp?

To be clear, when people talk about "offers" re: college basketball, it often does not fit the definition per most dictionaries. "Is the offer real?" is a valid question (rhetorically at least, as the person who has the true answer isn't going to tell you) to ask when someone is said to have an offer.

Recruiting is fluid. You'll know a kid is playing for a certain team when he hits the floor for the first time. Until then, things can change.

(...and football is a different animal. A "commitment" often seems to be the same as a kid saying, "uh... I might go there". Kids "flipping" after giving verbals is common... different unwritten rules of engagement in that world. Can appreciate the people who follow it, but football recruiting is definitely not for me...)

Some Josh Perkins tidbits:

Randy Perkins said his son plans to make that announcement Aug. 25, his birthday. The challenge will be to schedule visits between the end of the July recruiting period, the start of his senior year of high school, and that decision date.

Perkins has three official visits left. He already has seen Gonzaga and New Mexico, the latter when Steve Alford was coach. Alford, now coach at UCLA, wants Perkins to use one of his remaining official visits on a trip to UCLA, which is considered one of the favorites. Southern Cal, UConn and Minnesota also are possibilities.

If the UK offer doesn’t come in time for Perkins’ planned August announcement, don’t expect him to postpone the decision. He cut Duke from contention earlier this year because the Blue Devils’ staff told him he was a “back-up” plan for Jones.
