Staff composition is recruiting/retention trouble

Considering we have a black president.. The race care is moot. It doesn't exist.

There will ALWAYS be differences between the white and black American experiences. There's even more differences between the Native American and the white experiences. Does that mean we have to 'atone' for our sins for eternity? Or is there a set time frame that is universally justified and agreed upon where we have to 'atone' for said sins?

Sorry but what's 'dumb' is to imply that because we have a black president that race no longer plays a role in people's every day life. Because one black guy, raised in white areas by a white family, achieved a lot of success doesn't mean it isn't an issue. Yeah, Cosgrove seems to recruit Illinois pretty well and he does have some contacts in MN also. If you look at his "targets" this season, almost every one of the kids is from Illinois.

It would seem to me that he wouldn't be retained primarily for his recruiting ability as he best recruits areas that we can presume our staff already has decent connections (Illinois).

That was my thought as well. Kill and company probably know Illinois very well.

Formo, there are still deep racial issues in this country, Obama or not. I don't know if that relates to this thread, but I think it is probably a good thing to have at least a couple of minority coaches (provided they can coach) on the staff. Let's remember that a lot of the African-American kids who commit to the University of Minnesota may be a long ways from home and will need to be around people to whom they can go to help acclimate. A lot of players are very close to their coaches and I think it's important to have guys on the staff who can relate to what players may be going through.

Minnesota is still Vanilla-ville.

I actually know a white kid from Minnesota who played football for an historically black college.

But yeah, to some white kids from Minnesota, the idea of playing football at Grambling might be a little bit uncomfortable for them. It isn't that much different than a kid from an African American dominated area in Florida/Texas coming to MN to play football.

This is making an accusation that there might be racism involved with the hiring of the staff and Cosgrove was retained based on skin color. Making this type of accusation without proof is pretty sad and looks more like a knee jerk reaction than any type of factual premise.

So you're saying the hypothetical white kids are racists, but the actual black racists are not? I've pissed myself laughing today reading people find ways to rationalize how supporting someone strictly on the color of their skin is ok so long as they're black.

I don't think anyone is saying that. I think he is saying that the hypothetical white kids wouldn't be racist and either would the black kids who would feel uncomfortable in these scenarios. I think he is just trying to illustrate how a kid who is born in a certain culture (racial being part of that) might feel a little uncomfortable going to a completely different culture (white, minnesota kid to grambling, african american kid from a black area going to MN (with an all white coaching staff).

Hell, Horton said KGM would probably start against Michigan State, and then they barely played him. I'm sure the kid is schizophrenic by now. Not that KGM isn't making mistakes - he is, but Garin is getting mauled on the regular and they start the guy. WTF (Cosgrove must like Garin)."

the posters on this thread talking about how because some people haven't lived in other states makes them somehow naive about racism is laughable. I have lived in 5 different states around the country and i can tell you minnesotans are not any more naive than inhabitants of other states about race. The wife that made the comment about never living in another state should probably get over herself. She's no better than anyone else. Lastly, the players that may not be happy about playing for a coach black or white that is getting cut should either get over it or transfer.

Every D1 football school is Vanilla-ville, and it's Minneapolis, not Minnesota. There are a couple black people around.
