All about Max Brosmer Making the Cut

Howard, Gabriel, Rourke. Allard by stats but I think he’s overrated. Atlmyer close too
This is where we differ. Many of us said all year that we were not impressed with the Gopher's WRs. We've had difficulty recruiting the position. They seldom got any separation. Our offensive line wasn't great either. Max made our offense MUCH better than it should have been last year. As others have said, he is the best Gopher QB we've seen in our lifetimes.

Can you say the same about Howard or Gabriel with the talent that surrounded them? Did they elevate the talent or did the talent elevate them? They were both late round draft choices and no one has said they definitely have NFL futures. If they are out of the league in a year, no one will bat an eye. Rourke has been hurt so I'll withhold judgement, but he was only a 7th rounder. Most would say after Max's performances so far this preseason that he should have been drafted.

Seeing Max play with Ohio State's loaded squad would have been unbelievable. Same with Oregon. Gabriel isn't exactly tearing things up in Cleveland. I'd take Brosmer's game IQ over any of those guys. Howard definitely has more talent, but that VERY often doesn't pan out if you never develop between the ears. If you give them equal talent, I think Brosmer may well have been the best QB in the B1G last year the last half of the year (after getting acclimated). I'm not saying I called that. No one did!

Now, we're seeing him on an equal playing field in the NFL. You could argue he has looked better than any of the rest. I agree with you that he looks even better now than with the Gophers. Again, I don't think anyone saw that coming either. You'd think a fifth year senior, super hard worker, that's as smart as him might actually be close to maxed out, but it seems he's taken it to a whole new level. As I saw suggested earlier, the jump from FBS NH to the B1G may have been bigger than (or at least similar to) from the B1G to NFL.

PS - Daniel Jackson, by far our best WR, was just released by the Texans.

I basically agree.

To add "nuance," I'll chime in to say that Daniel Jackson *does* get separation -- just not sustained separation.

He gets separation from getting efficiently into and out of cuts. But then the separation is closed, because he is slow when running in a straight line. ...He ran the best or second-best shuttle and 3-cone drills at the combine. But he also didn't even run the 40. What does that tell you?

Basically, we rolled with two slot receivers last year. They both could release, cut and had solid hands. Neither were fast. And that's why the longest pass all year went for 39 yards. Explosion just wasn't possible when separation came exclusively from efficient cuts. (But you can run an otherwise successful and efficient offense that way.)

Apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but I didn't see it if so.... If Brosmer gets into a regular season game, he would be the first former Gopher QB to do so since???

Adam Weber? Marqueis Gray played TE in the league, not sure if he ever ran a wildcat.

Looked this up with the help of the Gopher Sports website: https://gophersports.com/sports/2018/5/21/sports-m-footbl-spec-rel-11-all-time-nfl-roster-html

Here are (I believe ) all of the former Gopher QBs who played QB in an NFL regular season game:
  • George Faust - 1939 Chicago Cardinals
  • Vic Spadaccini - 1940 Cleveland Rams
  • Tony Dungy - 1977 Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Mike Hohensee - 1987 Chicago Bears (replacement player)
  • Cory Sauter - 2002 Chicago Bears
  • Chris Streveler - 2020-2021 Arizona Cardinals, 2022 New York Jets
Note that if you visit the site above, it includes players who were on the roster at various points, whether they played or not. Brosmer would be joining a very exclusive club if he sees the field and would not need to play much to eclipse Hohensee's record of 52 passing attempts by a former Gopher.

You probably already know this, but Tony Dungy was not drafted in the NFL for his ability to play quarterback.

NFL Playing Career:
  • He played three seasons in the NFL, primarily as a defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

  • During his time with the Steelers, he won a Super Bowl ring in the 1978 season.

  • Dungy also served as the emergency quarterback for the Steelers in a 1977 game when injuries depleted the team's quarterback corps, making him the only player to intercept a pass and throw an interception in the same game since the AFL-NFL merger.

Your list shows how hard it is to actually PLAY QB at the highest level!

After watching him play QB for the Gophers, "emergency QB" was Dungy's ceiling under center at the pro level.

That's really depressing to think that Spergon Wynn had more passes than the other 8 combined. QB U we ain't.

Thanks for this - I flat out missed Alfonse. Interesting that the Gophers don't recognize Spergon Wynn.

Really getting tired of the pissing contest between you two. I think I speak for most everybody, that we don't care at this point. I keep wasting minutes in my life reading the dribble hoping there might be something new or incitefull.
Scrolling is your friend.

When can we get the hook out for JJ? (I’m already there)

Reality will settle in by what, week 8? J/k. Not really.

Why in the hell would you put Spergon Wynn in there?

Not everyone bullish on McCarthy success.

5. Predicting last-place teams in each NFL division for 2025

In the lead-up to the start of the regular season, a lot of attention is paid to a given team's ceiling. As we all know, however, there's also a floor. Trying to identify those clubs that may hit that floor was the task put in front of our own Garrett Podell, who predicted which teams would come in last place in their respective divisions.

You'd probably be able to guess most of the teams that Podell mentioned as last-place candidates, but he also threw out some curveballs, including two playoff teams from a year ago!

Minnesota Vikings: "... The problem is McCarthy's draft profile entering his rookie year was that of a bust, and then he became the first quarterback taken in the first round in the common draft era (since 1967) to miss his entire rookie season with an injury. McCarthy tearing his meniscus last preseason prevented him from developing while on the bench as a rookie. He is also the first first-round quarterback drafted with zero collegiate seasons with either 3,000 passing yards or 500 rushing yards since these Vikings selected Christian Ponder 12th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Florida State. The most recent passer selected in the top 10 like McCarthy without either such season at the college level was Detroit Lions 2002 third overall pick, Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington -- he was a complete bust. The NFC North is one of the best divisions in football, and having an unproven passer who didn't produce at a high level in college could spell a last-place finish for Minnesota in 2025.

I see that Mike Hohensee started two years for the Gophers but threw 19 interceptions in 11 games in his second year. Can you imagine a QB getting the opportunity to throw 19 interceptions on a Fleck team? Adam Weber equaled that number in 12 games during the legendary 1-11 season.

I think Vikes definitely beat these expectations. Fifth ranked scoring defense last year. Feels like many are also underestimating the potential of McCarthy as well.

Hohensee was before my time, but it seems like he was the definition of a gunslinger. His time at Minnesota and in the NFL, USFL, and CFL netted 66 TD and 66 INT.

O'Connell and the Vikes were comfortable letting Darnold go elsewhere in place of McCarthy. They see the QBs every day. Some people give O'Connell zero credit for understanding the QB situation. We'll see.
