ANNUAL GOPHERHOLE PICTORIAL COUNTDOWN TO GOPHERS SEASON OPENER!!

63!

On September 4, 2004 - The 24th ranked Gophers crushed Toledo 63-21, after calling off the dogs mid fourth quarter with the score 63-7.

279 yards passing for Cupito on just 10 completions is not too bad. The guy with the best average yards per carry in the game was Maroney Barber Russell Pinnix Rhys Lloyd.

62!

We've got a fun one for 62. No less than a special 62 yard field goal in a packed Metrodome by Chip Lohmiller to put the Gophers up over the Squawks 17-0 at half, just one week after beating Meat Chicken. November 22, 1986.

Unfortunately after a dominant first half, the Gophers would go on to lose this game in a way that characterized the UofM Metrodome experience. The game was memorable for a late-game penalty that allowed Iowa to kick a game-winning field goal after initially missing the attempt.
Had a chance to beat Michigan, Wisconsin & Iowa for the first time since 1967 (I believe) and blew it. Now that streak has 57 years…

Our first possession looked like a three & out but Rhys Lloyd scampered for the first down. Did we punt in the game? It was payback for the embarrassing loss at Toledo in 2001.

60!
For 60 we don’t have a touchdown or even a field goal. What we do have is a very recent memory provided by freshman sensation Koi Perich. A 60 yard punt return that if it were not for an unforgivable reffing call, should have been the iconic play from a historic all time comeback win over Michigan.

As it was, it at least was another reminder this was no ordinary freshman. And, the strange habit of Perich looking like he has had a season ending injury after a big play was born :)

59!
For 59 we go back to 1992 for a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season of Golden Gopher Football.

In the 1992 game between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes 28-13. The game, played on November 21, 1992, at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, saw Minnesota overcome a 13-10 deficit to secure the victory. A key factor in the win was the performance of backup quarterback Rob St. Sauver, who led the Gophers to three touchdowns after replacing the injured starter, Marquel Fleetwood.
The game was put away with St. Sauver's 59 yard TD pass in the fourth quarter to Aaron Osterman.

58!

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team has scored
exactly 58 points in a game only once, according to AI.

That occurrence was on September 10, 2016, in their 58-28 victory over Indiana State. This was the highest number of points scored by Minnesota at TCF Bank Stadium and the 7th most in a single game since 1946.

I am pretty sure I have seen every Gopher football game since the late 80’s and I can’t recall Rob St. Sauver.

Keep this stuff coming. Brings back goo memories

I've always enjoyed the photo countdown but first thought about doing this last year. In the end I was simply too lazy. This year I am slightly less lazy, although I still didn't get around to it until the 70's. I can't guarantee I'll either remember or have time every day (especially weekends), but when I think of it, it is kind of fun.

I thought I had a really fun one for 58 when I found a 58 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in Fielding Yost's last game in the 20's. It was a 6-7 game with Michigan but then realized it was the GOPHERS that fumbled that play and lost the game so it became far less fun and I moved on to something else.
