Koi Perich Commits to Gophers!!!!!!!!!

on3 lists his NIL Value at $74K. Not sure when they started doing that, or how they calculated it, but man.

Nathan Roy is at $95K. Those are the only two we have that have NIL value, according to them.

I think Perich flips and then Drake Lindsey, Mauricio Hinds, and Jaydon Wright all leave too.
I think you’ll be lucky if you guess right on one of those guys leaving. What’s your reasoning for those players not sticking?

A realistic one. Recruits are essentially free agents at this point, and can choose the highest bidder.

If Koi gets a high five to low six-figure offer from some other school (not saying he will), why would any of you naive people think he couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't take it? Because he happens to be from Minnesota? Nice try. That's Sid thinking, and Sid's dead.

I'm a huge Gopher fan. If he was my kid, I'd tell him to take the money. That's not trolling - that's honesty.
That's what's wrong with this country. There's no sense of loyalty anymore, or any drive to attain anything more than a quick buck. You'd push your kid to get cash over a quality education in a program where he could be remembered as one of the greats instead of an also ran among dozens of other guys who've come there from all over the place. It's all broken.

Fleck and Coyle need to change their best and get the NIL flowing. It’s a challenge because PJ is a a bit of a nut job, and I think only mildly popular with the fan base, and Coyle can barely speak English. If not them, who?

One of the stipulations of NIL should be you don't get the money until you graduate. You are a student athlete. If you are going to the NFL after 2 years you don't qualify and there would be less moving around. If you leave before you graduate you don't get a dime. The NCAA needs to get handle on this.

This encourages off the book payments again, doesn't seem tenable without the mother of enforcement arms.

As mentioned, there would just be under the table booster cash, AND this wouldn't likely hold up in court.

There have always been lots and lots of quick bucks flowing around college football. If the kid has market value, he should take advantage.

As for quality education, he's been offered by Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, USC, Northwestern. Stop acting like Minnesota is Oxford or something.

I wouldn't encourage my kid to look elsewhere over 5 figures or low 6. 7 figures might be another story but 100k isn't life changing money, it's temporary (although if he is from a advantaged family, those dollars could at least make an immediate, temporary impact). But 100k assuming x 4 years less assumed 25% effective rate leaves 300k. Also assume the average 18-22 male makes less than reasonable decisions with money and spends half and he graduates with 150k. Nothing to sneeze at but not life changing.

I don't but into the local hero angle either. More than likely, he is not remembered at all but possibly excoreated on GH for being a disappointment.

I would encourage my kid to go where 1. He feels is a good fit; 2. He would get a good education; 3. He would develop as a player. If that would be the U, great. But if there are options, explore them. No doubt this kid sees the same things with this program that many of us see here.

That amount of money is a significant down payment on a house. That's nothing to sneeze at. I know a guy who made it up to AA baseball. He paid cash for his first house with his signing bonus. It's a really nice head start.

This is all reasonable.

I agree with you and disagree with the person who said 300k isn’t life changing. It isn’t life changing in the fact that you still have to work and live a normal life, but you can’t tell me leaving college with zero student debt and 300k is better than 99% of the college graduates and gives him a huge head start into real life.

Look - until a recruit signs a letter of intent, he has really committed to nothing. verbal commitments are essentially a promise. and in the real work, people break promises. in this case, we're talking about a 17- or 18-year old kid. at that age, kids can change their mind 20 times a day. shoot - Gopher men's hoops lost a recruit after he signed a LOI.

If NIL is a factor, then I hope the young man is honest about it and tells the Gopher coaches what he is being offered and by whom - and gives the Gophers a chance to match or improve on the offer.

like it or not, in the new "wild west" reality of college football, schools have to make a decision - are they going to get into NIL bidding contests for recruits? If MN's answer is "No," then get used to MN ending up with recruiting classes ranked in the 40's nationally, or lower.

I'm not even 40. I hate what this sport has become. We're destined to be more of an also ran than we already are and all we're ever gonna have is 2019 to look back on. And that sucks because this is the one thing that's always brought me joy, win or loss. The hope for a breakthrough. Now, all we have to look forward to is middling at best. Bah🧓😤

The ignorance contained within your post is incredible. Let them eat cake! You clearly never had to scrounge through the couch growing up looking for change the day before payday trying to get some gas money. For at least 50% of these kids the dollars you throw around here saying they are not life changing is just stupid. Poorer people don’t always have the luxury of looking 30 years into the future. Hell, just a scholarship and free food and housing is life-changing now you throw in five or six figures of an NIL and these kids have a lot to think about.

Any scholarship athlete leaves college with zero student debt, so that part of your argument doesn't make sense. But $300K is $300K and I can see how for most people it would be a deciding factor.

If I knew I would have gotten free tuition, housing and graduate with $300k you bet I would have gone to college in Siberia to get it. That is such a huge head start. You could almost buy a decent house in a nice neighborhood with that kind of cash. Life changing to graduate with no house/rent payment as opposed to $2,300/month.

What kind of gopher fan would say this?
One who's looking at reality? What's your problem? Other posters have said similar things about players who visit/go elsewhere. Maybe you're just a little emotional right now, or whenever you posted?

Just calm down. Not every post is gonna be roses and warm fuzzies.

From the other side of the coin, couldn't the bolded also be considered an issue? Does everyone have to push their kids to strive to be one of the greats? Can't the kid just go have fun where he wants to?

See, it works both ways.

Also, you seem to think that going to USC instead of the U of M would be forgoing a quality education? Do you know anything about that school?

Do we actually have any real evidence that he’d make more NIL money at USC vs here? There’s not exactly much transparency as to what anyone is making.

No, but realistically, that's a school that historically has a lot of booster money floating around and making its way into peoples' pockets. It's pretty hard to imagine that wouldn't be the case.

IMO, the actual amount of NIL money that gets paid to players is far less than what people claim. For example, there's no way Taulia got an offer of $1M to play at an "unnamed SEC school". It would really help the whole NIL situation if these contracts were made public.

How would you know that? You don't think Deion's kid is getting the $4M that the TV graphic showed? Or that Caleb Williams isn't getting like $3M or whatever? $1M for Taulia would seem about right.

Also, where else do private contracts have to be public? This isn't about your needs/wants.

This post is astonishing. We really don't live in the same world.

For most Americans $25,000 is life-changing money, let alone $100,000. 25K allows them to catch up on mortgage payments, take their family on a vacation, and buy their college-bound kid a good used car.

There's a disconnect between classes in the US. I see it when my kids interact with kids who are wealthier or poorer than they are. The kids just don't get each other, and even more so the parents.

The first thing is true and pretty sad. The second thing is true and just plain crazy. Adults are complete idiots right now and you need look no further than a lot of fools on this very board. Luckily most of them stay in the OTB.

Everyone needs to calm down according to my anonymous source in Esko! 🚣
Well hopefully your source is correct.....but this is no longer a Koi Perich thread anyway.....this thread has taken on a life of its own now....there is no stopping it :)

Has anyone seen this kid play this season? Any up to date info on what the Gophers might be getting?

Well, Caleb Williams has an advertising deal with Wendys, just like Bryce Young did last year with Dr. Pepper. Albeit big name brands, those are both 100% in the spirit of what NIL was intended.

Isn't Deion's kid in the KFC ad with him? And wasn't LeBron's kid in an ad with his dad? Those are legit as well.
