Ben Johnson is a Disaster

I have good knowledge on this one. Garcia very likely will be back. Would take an incredible offer overseas to get him to go. He won’t play at another college. Battle won’t go to another college either. Year older though and more likely to try and go make some money if no NIL here
So your battle comment says, won’t go to another college…but at the same time reads as will go to another college for NIL money if gophers don’t offer since he is a year older…

Didn't Tubby sub 5 at a time? Kinda like using a second team. Assuming the talent level is actually there for that option; 25/15 minute split per group. Ten guys contributing. And that would give the other coach a lot of things to defend against. Just rambling here
He did that for at least 1or 2 seasons. Always made me laugh at announcers because, when the team was going well, they would talk about how great our depth was that our coach could let two full units develop chemistry together. When things were going poorly, announcers would say "I don't know why he does that, really prevents players from getting into a rhythym."

The only thing I can think is that Indiana burned their final timeout prior to the inbounds (it wasn’t MN…it was when the Hoosier player dove for the loose ball). So…I think CBJ’s tactic was get a trap since they have no timeouts. See if we can utilize the backcourt violation. But it was a gamble, and he lost…but not his worst gamble. What made it bad is when it wells clear they were getting across half court, they were slow to foul
Yeah it’s a mathematical thing. Better chance of forcing a TO and scoring off of that or fouling right away and adding possessions. Typically the lesser team will not look to add possessions

NIL offer at MN vs Overseas offers for Battle. He’s more likely to leave and weigh those options because he’s older into his earning window.

Gotcha. I hear NIL and I assume NCAA. I hear overseas and I think contract. But if he has his degree (not sure if he is on track for it by end of May), why not play overseas for decent money. He will have done what college athletics has offered: great competition, free school, got his degree, and now he can get paid to play basketball

I understand trying to force the turnover but realistically you need to add possessions to give yourself a shot. As soon as the trap didn't work they should have fouled ASAP. By not fouling we were down 4 with 8 seconds left having to go the full length of the floor with now zero chance to win.

I would argue there isn’t a big difference between 8 seconds and 10 seconds left in a game when you can’t advance the ball on timeouts like the NBA

Ben's best coaching moments have been on nights where he had minimal options to work with.
Last year's team was very, very limited in ability with limited options. While it was undermanned it was pretty well coached. The game against Rutgers last year with players missing and last night's game were examples. Last night, despite the loss, you have to hand it to Ben and the kids- very well played!

Where he is having trouble is integrating into the scheme and using kids with higher end talent such as Payne, Garcia and Henley (who has talent but is wild). One of the problems he obviously created was too many 4's and not enough shooters and playmakers. Working with better/deeper rosters is something Ben is going to have to come to grips with. Figuring out how to work with what the guys he has and what they can do to mesh....

Does the level of talent drop off so much as to not play backup guards more? And even if the talent drops off shouldn't BJ develop their talent for next year by playing them? At this point what difference in their record would it make

Curry was plenty good as a fr.
Still remember when as a Frosh, he played huge minutes when we upset Purdue at Mackey in OT - snatching boards, draining shots from the elbow and taking it 2 Purdue’s gargantuan PF - he was fearless!
A monster on the floor.

I saw him as being an All- Conference performer before he was done.saw the game at the Humphrey Terminal as I was waiting for Sun County to take me back to NYC. I miss this $99 upgrades to first class, almost as much as I miss seeing what a healthy Curry could have done in his career.

Finally someone explained to me what happened. Hard to see with everyone standing and I am short.

Did Ben come out and say what his strategy was on that possession?
Maybe in the time out huddle he told the team to see if they could force a TO initially and once they get it to half court foul certain players. The players then didn't execute what he wanted as efficiently as possible and didn't foul soon enough.
A great effort by the team last night, but they didn't get rewarded with a W.

I think it was the right call to try to trap first, I thought for a second they had a chance. But then waited too long to make the switch to fouling.

Good analysis.

I will continue to say too that I don't think we help Battle enough. He has a very good mid-range jumper game. Have to find better ways to put him in situations to take advantage of that. If he's against a smaller defender, have him post up. Get him in situations where he can catch the ball, turn around and face the defender 12-15 ft from the basket. He's so good in those situations.

It was zero percent because we didn’t get the turnover. I get your point of extending the game and adding possessions, but that isn’t necessarily a higher percentage success rate when you are a bad team that struggles to score

100% correct. It's hard to say if it is Ben's scheme or the lack of a quicker PG and SG paired with him that cause that situation. Battle is a great catch and shoot guy.

Tubby failed to use Hoffarber and run set plays to get him open away from the ball so he could catch and shoot. Ben, in my opinion, would be benefited by having a whole bunch of set plays to get Battle open off the ball so he can catch and shoot. Too often Battle is left to stand. He should be like a Reggie Miller mini-me, just making the defense chase him.

Maybe so, but in the end what would it matter? Is there a team that moves the ball worse than the Gopher? I don't think so. Ball movement is terrible, spacing is terrible, there just isn't much good right now about this team. However, on the other hand I guess we could say the one good thing is they are young. We can always fall back on that

Youngest team in the nation.

This is not meant to be a criticism of Ben Johnson and it won't go down as my post of the year, but......does anybody else notice the number of times in a game that the camera catches Ben Johnson blankly looking up at the scoreboard? It seems to be non-stop?

You're watching a different game than I am.

on the new Talk Gopher Buckets podcast, Ryan James had a very interesting discussion on guard play. a couple of his main points:
Cooper struggles against quicker defenders, which is why Samuels has gotten more playing time.
Samuels is also more effective on defense against a quicker guard.
- and James reiterated that the Gophers absolutely need to get a PG from the portal who is quick and can bring the ball up court against pressure.

That was my real-time guess, too, and I agreed with the tactic. It was realistically their best path to a win. Indiana's players are just too good of free throw shooters to pin your hopes on their missing.

How did it go today? More of the same?
