Mo wasn't replaced by a younger more capable player during the regular season.

It has nothing to do with anything other than putting the best players out to win the game, based on regular season performance, for me.

(And Tanner's health, related to concussions, if that is a factor.)

I am not at all opposed to Tanner coming in for a snap or set of downs early if that is what he wants to do. I'm sure Fleck and KC would accommodate that. For sure Fleck and Tanner have discussed how Tanner would like to end his career.

But game planning the past month has been around one QB. One QB has had the lead role in practice. I assume that is AK.

Agreed. I want to win. But the “don’t play tanner because AK needs experience” crowd is missing the larger picture of other guys needing experience. You can say AK should start because he is better. But the experience reasoning needs to be applied to every position if that’s the stance.

That’s what I’m confused by. I would play to win. If that means 30 carries for Mo then do it. Syracuse will be down 20 at the half. So this is all moot.

Listen carefully. You play your best players. You need to win the game. That is why Mo plays. That is why JMS plays. That is why AK plays.

It doesn't matter if you consider this the last game of the season (it is) or the first game of next season (it is not), it is critical to win.
 

Mo absolutely should not see the practice field or the in the game field. He is a legend. He suffered a massive injury. He proved he can come back as good or better than before the injury. He is in the verge of making millions. An injury in the bowl game could be life altering.

Let the other backs compete for depth chart placement leading into spring.

I agree with you. I’m not saying I don’t. I am saying posters who think AK should play due to needing experience aren’t recognizing other positions also need experience. He should play because he’s better. That’s my point.

That’s his decision. I think he gets drafted but likely day 3. Maybe he has been told this helps his stock if he performs well? Maybe he just wants to play. The coaches aren’t forcing him out there.

If that is true, then Mo would've opted out and Fleck would've blessed it from the git-go.

If Mo did not opt out, then he's playing, and he's going to play the only way he knows how.


We all obviously hope he goes on to a successful NFL career, but he's not the biggest or fastest back, and RB seems to be becoming one of the most "dime a dozen" positions in the game these days.

Right. Top end speed isn’t there. Not saying he can’t be an NFL back but he isn’t fast in college. He got caught many times this year. NFL will be even more glaring.

I hope he carves out a few years and makes some money.
 

When you look at him playing on TV you think he should be like 5'8" 240lbs or something.

Surprising somewhat (to me) that he is "only" 5'10" 210lbs.

Count me surprised he’s choosing to play. He’s been really beat up all season. Admirable toughness and dedication but he’s taking a risk.

Regrading the QBs I’ve seen both have clunker games this year. I’ve seen both look pretty phenomenal. I’d blame a lot of the struggles on the supporting cast that seems to also have good and bad games. MN should win with either one. AK has a higher physical ceiling, hopefully a Max Duggan trajectory to his career but as mentioned Morgan has experience, protects the ball, and has above average accuracy and touch IMO. A howitzer shot isn’t always necessary in college football and Morgan throws beautiful and accurate fades.

Bottom line, won’t be screaming at Fleck either way. The coaches want to win too, I’d hope.

Disagree that AK has had any "clunkers" that were his own fault. Getting forced into action at Penn State, isn't his fault. And in every game seemingly, other than finally against Wisconsin, when everyone in the stadium knew we weren't throwing the ball, isn't his fault.

Agree. One thing I don't want to see would be Morgan start and later get pulled because of how he's playing. Someone mentioned this being his 'Swan Song'. It would be a bad way to end a career with the team you've invested 6-years in only to be pulled because of performance.

I'd let AK start and rotate Morgan in. He deserves at least that. He's been the heart and soul of this team and there's a little bit of respect that goes along with that. He's a winner on the field, but more importantly he's a winner in life.

The decision is entirely Mo's to make. He has made it.

A couple of posters mentioned experience factor. Most understand that Athan getting valuable experience in a big game is a side benefit. Same for Brockinton and a few others.

Being the all-time greatest rusher in Gopher history doesn't mean much in the draft but it will be an enormous credential for his future coaching career.

The starter has been known for a month. The game plan is based on the starter. The starter has had most first team snaps in 15 practices. We are all set to go.
 

Regarding Tanner. Since it looks like he’s playing I would like to see him start and play the first quarter, and then turn it over to Athan. That would give Tanner a chance to go out with a start, a good opportunity to make plays, and let’s the team and coaches honor a player that gave the Gophers some great football and a top ten finish in 2019.

No kidding! If Tanner is ready to go, he should play. He’s good enough to be the QB to help win the game, but if he’s not ready, then he should sit. No charity should be given as a win is what it’s all about. And I think Athan has earned playing time and should play most of the game.

Everyone plays to raise their stock in this game.
 

In general the value of bowl games is to give the coaches a few weeks to evaluate the players who will be starters next year by giving them most of the reps in practice.
#24 is not destined to play much if at all in the NFL and if MN does not have any RBs that need to be given the practice reps then lot him play play if he wants to.
Let Morgan in the last few minutes as a gesture.
