All Things 2022-2023 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

That's fine if we didn't want to pay Correa but we all knew that is what it was going to take. My issue isn't with going another direction, my issue is that I believe our attempt at Correa was fake, a PR stunt. Because we didn't really want to pay market rates for Correa, we are now stuck with the worst possible option at SS.

I think Howie said it, but I'd have much preferred Urshela - Polanco - Arraez to what we have now.
I don't think it was Fake nor a PR stunt. $280 M is a huge offer.

Unfortunately it only takes 1 team to outbid you and then it's done. Once the Giants pivoted after failing to land Judge, the writing was on the wall. Up to that point, I think the Twins bid was an earnest attempt to land Correa.

Didn't work.

Now that the dust has settled with the top FA's, is anyone really disappointed we didn't give one of them more years or more money than what they received?

I'm not.
It depends how you define top free agents. They absolutely should have gone after Abreu and I have no issue topping 3/$60.

You are hoping the work out in the front of the contract cause yes the back ends of these deals are usually terrible.

In fairness the twins have never signed anyone to this kinds of contracts before so not sure it has ever burned them before. Joe Mauers contract was not an issue for the twins. Plus I can only imagine the fans grumblings if they had let a MVP, 5x silver slugger, 3x gold glove, 3x batting champion catcher from Saint Paul leave as a free agent at the age of 27
The whining by some fans about Mauer's contract was ridiculous. It was perfectly reasonable when it was signed. And it was always known he wouldn't be catching the last couple years. Yes, the injuries forced him to 1B about two years sooner than hoped, and his power #'s didn't increase after, but it was far from a disaster.

And yes, those same fans would have had an absolute fit if they'd let Mauer walk coming of an MVP and 3 batting titles right after Target Field opened. The Twins had no choice but to give him a blank check. He didn't make it nearly as hard on them as he could have, given he had all the leverage and they had none.

The offer may have been sincere when they made it, but they should have given him a deadline on it and moved on. Instead they dithered around waiting on him when they should have known it wasn't going to happen while every decent FA signed elsewhere. It was naive and inept.

I'll give you Abreu, but I was mainly talking about Correa, Bogaerts, Rodon, and Swanson.

one of the issues when you're dealing with Boras is that he wins by waiting you out.

Let's say the Giants didn't make that offer on Correa. Does anyone think Boras would have turned to the Twins and said "OK, we'll take your offer."

Heck no. Boras would have let this play out through January and into February if necessary until he got the # of years and the total contract value he wanted.

and then if you get left holding the bag, you're really hosed because there are no other options.

at least now, the Twins have another month to 6 weeks to try and make some deals to improve the roster.

And after a few years many, if not the majority, of Twins fans were complaining about that contract because Mauer couldn't stay healthy and didn't hit for power and he 'wasn't worth the money'.

How many of the recent World Series champions have bought their way to a championship? Virtually none of them. They're all built from within. Houston let Correa walk and won it the next year. Even the Dodgers are built mostly from within. The Yankees haven't won a World Series or even been to one in 13 years.

If the Twins are going to win, they're going to do it by building from within and making a few smart trades, not overpaying for FA's.

I agree with this for the most part. The Correa deal was actually brilliant last year. In effect you needed a one year stop gap until your #1 prospect was ready to take over the position. Instead of filling SS with an Andrelton Simmons type, they went and got the best available free agent. But it was always a one-year deal, probably in the eyes of both. The problem is they really liked Correa once they had him and Lewis got hurt again. I do believe the Urshela deal indicated they really though they were going to land Correa long term. Maybe/maybe not.

Where I disagree with you to some degree is the unwillingness to go longer on some of these deals leads to trades which might help in one area but at the expense of another.

We're not the Yankees but we're not the Rays. They could sign one of the above and not have it be crippling if they have to eat the last couple years of a contract. I'm not sure this offseason is the time to do it as they're not one player away from being a contender. But I disagree that they should never, ever do it. In Correa's case, it is a rare case to get a top 10 player in MLB even remotely interested in Minnesota.

Correa's introduction as a Giant has been postponed, as there was some sort of red flag that popped up during Correa's physical.

Reports that Derek Falvey actually increased his offer after hearing Correa was injured are not true.
"Torn rotator cuff? That's gotta be made up. I'm on to you, Giants. Thad, get Boras on the horn. Tell him we'll go to $400 million over 15 years."

$280M is a huge offer. Except when you know the market is above $300M. Then it's a PR offer.

So this front office planned their entire offseason around a player who had such a troubling medical concern that another team flat-out backed out of a deal with him. A player who they had more access to over the last 8 months than all other teams.

That is a really good point. What the heck did the twins know or did they miss? The twins do have a knack for having players with injuries so Correa would have fit right in.

This front office is bad enough. Dr Nick running the medical staff just tops it off.

Mets are ready to win now, I would go with Verlander (reunited) and Scherzer too.

Did the Twins reinstate their $280M offer after the failed physical? I would have pulled that off the table completely.
