SOUND OFF! Post-Game Thread: Gophers Lose Heartbreaker to Hawkeyes, Again, Fleck Remains Winless vs Iowa.

I would have rather seen Mo run the ball again on 3rd and 8 at the end of the game. They were on the Iowa 33 and going into the wind. You basically have two plays to get a first down and Iowa never gets the ball back. If you fail you are making Iowa go 45-50 yards to set up a potential game winning field goal. The same Iowa team that had punted 4 straight times in the 2nd half. Tell Kirk you have two plays to get 8 yards and win us the game. You showed you had no faith in your QB, so expecting him to all of a sudden complete a pass on 3rd and 8 to win the game was a mistake.
It was one of a comedy of errors of terrible play calling once we crossed the 40.

For next year a wish list:
-Better pass rush (was hoping that the young fellas could do more/play more since they were hyped so much.
- Someone like Dr. Gibby to transfer in with Cody…he’s a player.
- Variety in the pass game…was so happy KC was coming back as I thought his previous stint as OC was great. Run heavy but enough passing to keep em’ honest. I remember those bubble screens and crossing routes KC!
- PJ to play to win.
- Better receivers (better receiver play)?
- Beat Iowa with the same lucky stuff they keep getting!

Yep....multiple opportunities were there to win this game, our guys didn't make the plays, theirs did. The chicken little, fire Fleck crowd will be out in full force for the next day or so.

It sucks losing to Iowa, especially when we have had multiple opportunities to get the win in the past few years and come up just short. But the handful acting like this game should be the last straw just look foolish.
The issue for many fans, I think, is the patterns in coaching that has lead to the failures to win. Suggesting this game is a one off borders on blindness or willful ignorance.

PJ seems to get himself so psyched up for a game he forgets how to manage it. I did not watch the post-game interview, but I assume he took the blame for not getting the play calls in and burning 1st half timeouts. How many times do we have to hear that before it gets corrected! I wish he trusted his players to make plays and not coach scared all the time! Take a shot down field for the love of God!

Exactly.

Minnesota way to lose.
A very Iowa way to win.

I'm frustrated as much as anyone but some of you are really over the top.

This game summed up the entire season.

I'll be renewing my season tickets for next year, rooting to get axe next week, and strong finish.

I didn’t see anything at all wrong with the pass. It was pretty much dead on the money. The defender got a hand in there and made a great play. That interception is not on Athan.
According to Fleck, Athan did not read the defense properly and threw it to the wrong guy (non open guy).

Maybe when you spend the entire game actively preventing him from finding a rhythm this is what happens. It's the circular logic of the PJ obsessively conservative vortex.

I would think they are all trolls but some of them are known accounts.
You can say Iowa is better coached because of how MSM blew his assignments twice resulting in huge plays for Iowa.
Or because our inexperienced qb missed on an easy touchdown before half or went 1/8 in the second half with the terrible decision to force it to Brockington.
We missed Morgan’s ability to make some throws in this game.

Really impressive game by Mo Ibrahim against one of the better defenses in the country. Mo isn’t a fumbler but the odds are one is going to get punched out from time to time. Just unbelievable timing.

Trickett failed.
The defense failed at critical junctures.
AK failed at a critical juncture in the red zone and then was maybe a little late on the interception. Some missed running opportunities.

Iowa is really good IMO. Well-coached. Crazy good special teams. Opportunistic defense. Despite that I really believed the Gopher run game was going to grind them into oblivion in the fourth.

Rossi should get some blame here. PJ is who he is. Rebuilding year coming.
Trickett's FG attempt was going in. Was right on line to sneak inside the upright. Nope. Football gods s__t on us, make it curve out at the last second.

Mo had lost 3 fumbles in over 800 carries. We drive almost the whole field literally on his back. Nope. Football gods s__t on us, he loses his fourth.

Iowa CB read the slant perfectly, got his hand in there to break it up. 4th down. Nope. Football gods s__t on us, make the ball pop up, into the hands of their LB, who then in fact never stepped out. Should've been a pick six. Even that would've been better. We don't burn the TO's and have more time to try a miracle drive.

But nope. Football gods s__t on us. Our LB's get sucked in and "took the cheese" on the weak play-action, let the TE waltz right into the middle of the zone, wide open, even Petras can do an easy pitch and catch with that.

We should've just let them score. We all knew exactly what would happen. They'd burn out our TO's and the clock, then either score a TD or kick it in.

Ball game.

Just incredible how we found a way to lose this game.

Our lone TD scoring drive, we threw the ball 61 yards.

That 2nd to last drive, we went almost the whole length of the field on Mo's back.

Either go one way or the other.

I'm a wholistic approach guy. This isn't black or white, the offense needs to be revamped all offseason.

Never beating Iowa is disgusting, but the most worrisome part? I don't see anybody you can point to and say he'll be really good next year in a group of 85 guys, including game changing incoming recruits. This might be the high point for awhile?

Lindbergh, Whaley, Carter on D
Esery, Spann (if he comes back), Evans, Jackson on O

Off the top of my head- the cupboard is not bare

That last long play action pass by Iowa I think everyone was wide open…defense didn’t have it yesterday. Luckily Iowa stopped themselves at least a few times. Didn’t matter in the end.

There were at least a couple times when the ball hit a wide open Iowa receiver dead in the hands.

The one in particular that sticks out, OK the guy was diving through the air, would have been spectacular but still was wide open and should've been huge.

The defense largely did have it ... until they didn't. That's the thing with Rossi. He does everything he can do, and gets ever drip he can out of his guys.

Defense can only do so much. Offense has really left him out to dry this year.

Petras had 221 yards and probably should have had over 300. The defense really struggled against what was supposed to be a bad offense. Not enough pressure, too much, bad guesses, bad reads, bad individual plays, or good plays by Iowa or some combination. Yes, could have been worse and ultimately they only scored 13 points but as the guys on Final Drive said Iowa passing was maybe the difference (outside of the turnovers).

At the end of the day, we were going to score a TD on the drive that Mo fumbled.

That was going to be the game winner.

And who coaches the QB? Who works with him in practice to prepare him for those situations? Don't blame the player and let the coaches skate from criticism.

Hot take but do we win going away with Morgan yesterday?
Morgan doesn't throw the ball any better than Athan did.

The only question is if it would've tried to throw it to someone other than Brockington. Fleck says that choice was the wrong choice (I believe he said that or hinted at it). Maybe Morgan makes a "better" choice. Maybe it's a first down, maybe a drop, maybe a bad pass, who knows.

Yep, hypothetical. I don’t think AK had a good game but it’s no sure thing TM would have made better decisions and maybe he’s sacked leading to a stunted drive. Alternate timeline.

Again --

What are you talking about?? The coaches wanted to hand the ball off every single play after that. No human can stay in rhythm, in these conditions, like that.

Bad decisions are bad decisions. He’s young, that’s expected and he could turn out to be an all-timer. I don’t fault the coaches for riding Ibrahim when he was having a career game, in lieu of depending on a redshirt freshman QB. It is what it is. The play calls and personnel on the series leading to the interception…maybe not ideal in hindsight.

I just cannot wrap my head around it. The one drive we scored a TD. 9 plays for 72 yards

And we threw the ball 4 times for 61 yards.
- 13yd to Brockington on 3rd & 9
- 29yd to Jackson on 3rd & 5
- 12yd to Brockington on 1st & 10
- 7yd to Mo on 1st & 10

Never did that again.

I think Fleck dictates the run pass ratio and I think he dictates pass or run at times. If this is correct he should resign from doing this immediately and give it 100% to Ciarocca, so Fleck can keep his job long term.

I get what you're saying, but IMO this criticism would hold more water had we not run for 312 yards, and 6.2 per carry.

But then, there we were suddenly: 3rd & 7. OH s__t, we need to throw the ball! Damn! Wish we would've done that maybe once in the last 30 plays, maybe our QB would be in rhythm! Ohh welllll here we goooooooo OOOOoooo F.
