Post Game Thread: Gophers lose to Illinois

Offense didn't play great but this one falls in large part on the D. Can't give up that many long sustained drives. D looked a step slow all day, always seemed to be chasing the play, especially when Illinois threw the ball. Walley had a really rough game.

D did a solid job keeping them out of the Endzone but they needed more stops to give the offense a chance with some decent field position.

Illinois TOP 40:04; Gophers 19:56. Minnesota ran 42 plays, Illinois ran 86. DeVito was 25-32, 253 yards, 1 TD and 0 Int. And Chase Brown ran for 180 yards and caught 3 passes for another 50+. Our defense couldn’t handle all of Illinois’s offensive weapons. Our defense was gassed.

Minnesota had 38 yards passing. No TDs and 3 INTs. What can you say?

4-2 better than 3-3, 2-4, or 1-5

MO was awesome! Feel bad for him as he’s an eagle surrounded by bunch of turkeys. 🦅🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃

After the MSU game I figured we’d bowl eligible after today. 😢

21 yards passing. Anyone blaming the defense…
The defense sucked balls. They had a guy run for 220, and a qb that seemed like he completed 90% of his passes. I blame the defense more than the offense.

We had three possessions the whole first half, because Illinois went on 100 play drives into oblivion.

Both times we scored, we should have had all the momentum, and they went down the field at total will.

PJ’s recruiting isn’t keeping up with most of the other Big Ten programs . just because his recruiting is better than rhe previous regime doesn’t mean much if he isn’t gaining on the other Big Ten programs, which he isn’t. PJ liked to fill his class before other programs so he can market and tell fans he has a top 25 class. Then by the time the other programs fill their classes his drop significantly and fall outside the top 25

The Gophers for better or worse are designed to play one way.

when the other team does things that do not allow the Gophers to play their preferred style, they struggle. they often look confused.

some of that is execution. some of that is coaching. some of that is just not having as many good athletes as the other team. but even great athletes need to be put in schemes that highlight their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

will be very interesting to see what team shows up at Penn State. If the players and coaches cannot find a way to come up with a better effort, things could get ugly.

They were on the field for that many plays because they could never get off the field.
They were on the field that long, also, because the offense was atrocious...

Mo averaged 8.5 yards per run. But we couldn’t finish drives. Tells you a lot about our passing game.

PJ sounds frustrated talking to JG.

Our lack of skill position talent on offense has been fully exposed. Our WR group minus CAB is not good. Our RB's behind Mo are not good. Our starting QB is a limited game manager and now hurt. The back-up QB's are not ready.

Illinois had 5 of 6 scoring drives of 9 or more plays with an average of 73 yards per drive.
Youbet your a$$ this loss, as bad as our passing game was, belongs to the defense.
It’s on both your offense was awful all game you were out gained by a chase Brown alone and you had an off week to prepare 😂🤣

No one is going to deny that the offense struggled but Illinois had 4 drives of over 10 plays and another that was 9. The defense could not get off the field. Can't let a team convert that many 4th downs. Can't allow teams to move the ball up and down the field putting your offense in bad field position. No forced turnovers.

Offense had plenty of issues but the D did not play up to their usual standards and was a massive part of why that game turned out the way it did.

But feel free to try and blame it all on the offense if it makes you feel better.
