All Things 2021 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

After yesterday’s game I decided that it’s easier being a timberwolves fan than a Vikings fan. With the wolves you get the NBA (if that’s your thing) and they are dependable and predictable. Plus there’s some intermittent gratification when they spring a few upsets every season. The off seasons, which are the real seasons for wolves fans, are always full of hope and possibilities (see: Simmons, Ben).
The Vikings just destroy you.

When being a fan of the worst franchise in all the 4 major sports is easier than the Vikes, well, that sure captures the realities of the MN sports fan. Sigh...

Go Gophers!!

Honestly, this almost makes the loss worth it. Just how does an NFL play-by-play guy mess it up that bad? Uhh, how about wait a half second for the refs to signal?

Other announcing errors I heard this weekend, Mike Grimm while in the redzone said the Gophers have a 3rd and 7 from the 6. That doesn't seem possible. Otherwise Grimm is solid, IMO.

Drew Brees called Carolina QB Sam Darnold, Sam "Bradford" to open Football Night in America. It's early but Brees really looks out of his element in the studio. He also could not contain his glee that Winston struggled mightily in Week 2

PA is a play by play announcer who is more worried about making sure he's part of the story, vs calling the action as it is.

As a radio guy, you literally could call the game a second slower or two to ensure something is called correctly.

I understand people love him, but I prefer someone who uses less words who calls that action accurately.

With that said, I'm sure PA is a wonderful person.

Really, there are actually fans of his? Seriously? I honestly can't fathom that.

Fortunately all the games are on TV, so I don't have to worry about it. If I had to listen to the radio fortunately on Serius/XM I can listen to whomever their opponent's crew is.

Haha you know you're immune to the Vikings blowing a game when afterwards there is more talk about the radio guy missing the call than the idiot missing the kick. Being numb to sports pain has it's positives I guess.

Not his fault they lost today or last week. I think when they built the new training facility they moved the Indian burial mound from Edin Prairie to Eagan.
It is always difficult to blame a QB on a loss, because there are a lot of things that happen during a game, that can swing the direction of a game. Cousins does have a long history of not being able to beat good teams, and that is the problem I have with him.

Cousins was actually pretty damn good in getting them into FG position, on the money time and again.

A most gripping victory by the home Cardinals! During that final drive, the Viking fan that I brought to the game had a feeling of doom the entire final drive. I told him when the Vikings got the ball I give the Vikings 75%+ chance to win. Cousins did everything he could as well as any QB could have.

Shitload of Vikings fans in the stadium, but that's not unusual since PHX is a transient town, lots of snowbirds, etc. For the first home game of the season, it was a pretty damn good atmosphere and pretty damn good game.

That's just a tough loss all the way around for the purple. At no point in the game did I feel like the Cardinals were outplaying the Vikings. The Vikes ran the ball at will, huge gaping holes, Cousins was pretty decent. I can't believe the Cardinals pass rush almost never got to Cousins. That was the shocker of the game to me.

I had an "unscheduled" knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and I'm still pretty housebound. Normally, on a beautiful September Sunday afternoon I would have been outside doing something fun and would have skipped all or part of the Vikings game. Yesterday the Vikings "trapped" me (being facetious) so I was annoyed at the familiarity of how they lose (of course) and annoyed at being stuck inside on a beautiful day with them. To use a dated but apt reference, they are Lucy with the football and I'm Charley Brown thinking she'll let me kick it.

The wolves are easier on the psyche.

I agree that unexpected success seasons are the most fun. But I don't agree with this overall. The Wolves are a sad pathetic joke of a franchise. I followed them pretty closely their first 20 years but you can't be this bad for this long and expect people to stick around.

There's no rational basis for being a wolves fan. None. The consistent pre and post KG ineptitude of the franchise doesn't warrant a molecule of fan loyalty. But I stick around. Probably for the same reasons that gopher FB fans stick around.

I would argue that there's no rational basis for being a vikings fan, albeit for a different reason. Whether it is an individual game or an individual season, there is probably no franchise in the history of sports that has failed to deliver the goods more frequently when it should deliver the goods than the vikings. Ultimately, I think that causes more anguish (and better stories!) than a franchise that is perpetually lousy.

Definitions and assumptions would need to be well-defined, but this would be an interesting one to research.

Gopher football has some doozies but factoring in the much lower expectations, the Vikings top them.

The Bills might come close if you just look at just Super Bowls but the Vikings have creatively thrown away so many games and seasons that, with widened criteria, the Vikings have to safely be ahead.

vikes are 8-14 in their last 22 games including the playoffs

It shows what kind of a circus organization this team is.
KFAN's strong ties as the media arm of Vikings football has made it pretty bad.
Surprising the number of people on social media last night defending Paul Allen for what is essentially the biggest mistake you can make in calling a game (only worse would have been a playoff game or Super Bowl).

Fortunately for Paul, the Vikings don't have many of those high level games.

As of today would you go over or under 7 wins for the Vikings this year?

OK. So what do you want? Fire him? Come on ...

He and the team played well enough to win both games but they didn’t. Who’s fault that is I am not sure. The Vikings have never drafted a QB high since ponder and teams with good QBs don’t let them walk. Just think if they had not won meaningless games last year and redone Cousins deal in 2019 they could have drafts in the top 4-7 and gotten a QB. Instead they milked 7 wins out of the season and are now stuck with Cousins through next year at an ungodly salary number.

I would rather have accepted a terrible year last year and cousins being gone than the constant purgatory of 8 to 10 wins and no hope in the playoffs.

I will never agree with this. Making a player that barely sees the field just that more important to the outcome of games makes little sense to me.
But they wanted to make the product more exciting. Why should you be able to keep a kicker on the team that has almost no impact on the game?

It absolutely matters. When leadership consistently relies on game winning field goals, and never has a kicker that can make them, that's on the leadership.

Who cares if he made one to tie last week, they still lost. If he makes the XP yesterday it at least goes into overtime. That's not his fault?

Regardless it's a systematic issue that won't be resolved until Spielman and Zimmer are gone.
The failing was Rick not having the stones to tell Zim to eat it when he wanted Carlson released. Maybe it works out different than what he’s doing know at Las Vegas, we will never know.

so would the loss last week had been better had he not made the kick last week? Maybe Dalvin shouldn’t fumble last week and they can try to kick a field goal to win the game.

no him missing the xp was not good either and it cost them. It also cost Seattle yesterday as they missed an xp and lost in overtime.

No one is actually a twolves fan. They are a trendy team for two weeks a year and then go back into obscurity.

Who says he would have made it last week? A loss is a loss whether it's regulation or OT.

Who cares about Seattle, they have nothing to do with the Vikings kicking woes under Zimmer.

Leber is on the fan bringing has pablum in his fake California accent

Its almost like sports are life and death. Who actually gives a shit? I might for 15 minutes after the game but.....jeez

Looking back at Carlson is just 20/20 hindsight, revisionist history, whatever you want to call it. In his time with the Vikings, Carlson had a glitch (for lack of a better way to put it) in his swing and he didn't go back and look at the tape and dig into it until the Vikings had cut him. He used his time between the Vikings dumping him and Raiders signing him to do his homework, talk to his old coach, look at his Auburn tape, and get his shit together.

Would all that have happened with the Vikings? I would imagine at some point but who knows when? I'm not saying it was the right move to dump him but at the end of the day, while he was with the Vikings he was not right.

It happens sometimes; I would imagine the Vikings at some point have capitalized on someone that was cut by another team and they resurrected them, just can't immediately think of an example off the top of my head.

He was a rookie and only played 2 games for the Vikings. He was perfect in his first game. One bad game then getting cut doesn’t give him time to fix anything. Expecting a rookie to be refined by game 2 is just not realistic. That takes years at any position.
