All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

NOT a chance! That guy absolutely crumbles under pressure. UNLESS, he's a backup thrown in during mop up duty, which is also a very unlikely scenario.

He will never be the primary QB for a SB winner...
Agree. Concrete feet Cousins is 7-31 against teams with a winning record.

Not a Fleck hater at all. I just don't get all the hype. Again, if he gets beat again by Iowa and Bucky, he'll be 1-9.........and heading into next year with a new qb, a somewhat starting over offensive line, and another crap defense.

I'm neutral on the guy. We'd be starting over on a guy who can't beat his rivals, didn't win the west, etc. Ho-Hum
I think the hype is mainly because of having the best season since 1970 just two years ago while never having an absolutely terrible season.

even last year they were a play away from being over :500 in conference. Since 1970 MN has been over .500 in conference 8 times. We were a play away from having our 9th best season since 1970 last year. Think about that.

Florida State about to start a coaching search.
Norvell is pretty respected and is really early there after taking over a dumpster fire.
if they fire him, they’ll be hiring a coordinator from somewhere or a G5/FCS coach.
Florida state isn’t as good of a job as people think

Their next coach is going to be Prime Time.
They aren’t even looking for a coach. They are 1.25 years into a new coach and 1 of the years was covid. That coach walked into an absolute dumpster fire. He is fired mid 2022 season at earliest

For anyone that thinks Franklin is going to leave PSU for USC, here's your answer. Not a chance...

Disagree that's a valid reason.

He can't beat Ohio St at Penn St. So can't compete for a natty.

Going to USC would be able being able to compete for a natty. That's it.

Advantages of USC vs MN
-- LA - Southern California recruiting - school culture/leadership that wants to win - financial support.

Advantages of MN vs USC
- Established loyalty with occasional special season, this would be "Flecks" program, RTB really works here.

End of the day it is going to be about who Fleck wants to be. I think he can achieve more in MN but needs to feel the School is going to make that happen. I think our leadership is to "woke" with to many "football = toxic masculinity" types to really ever invest in Football. Only hope is that PJ's type of football and brand may sway the people in the middle.

For sure, we are too woke. He needs to move to California to get away from the liberals

Yep. Money talks.
unless of course you are already a multi-millionaire and don't need to chase a paycheck which allows you to factor in other things above and beyond just the number of dollars in your contract.

Maybe guys like Franklin or Fleck get drawn to the bright lights but if they are it won't just be about the money because they already make a ton of that.

Respectfully the Administration is a supportive of a quality FB program as it's ever been in the modern era.

When the Billds arrived here in '89 from a UGA heritage it was clear the Powers At Be did not give a tinker's damn about football. That all changed starting with Yudof.

As to whether the U is awake, yep, the No Doz runs deep at this institution. But right now the Administration is not against the FB program.

Also worth noting there's a good degree of awake with the kids...kind of embedded now generationally. That's not keeping them out of the stands so far in 2021, and didn't keep them from showing their disdain for the State of OH-IO during the last home game.

I think he is clearly talking about the folks in charge at the U.

I'd imagine that the powers that be calling the shots in the athletic department at USC are probably a bit more conservative than the powers that be who Coyle reports to. It has nothing to do with geography and it's just the difference between a smaller (sports-obsessed) university and a large public school.

I do think it's easier to win at those schools (USC, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, etc.) because I do believe there likely are fewer hurdles. I'm not sure if I would say one is "woke" and one isn't, but I think the smaller private schools can maybe make things easier.

I all but guarantee that the money Fleck makes here, and the houses he can get with that here, will essentially be greater than what USC can offer, given the insane costs out there.

It's weather, for one, but more importantly it's a chance to take a program that is one of a couple handful with a legit chance to win a natty, and has done so in the last 20 years, back to that glory. The challenge of that, at a place that it's realistic to do (ie, not Nebraska or Tennessee). That would be the main reason.

I think this is part of what makes USC scary for people.

Sure, if Franklin has two 8-4 seasons back-to-back, he might get fired by Penn State. But Helton was fired coming off of an 8-4 season followed by a 5-1 season. I think Penn State has more fertile recruiting grounds (not in the amount of players from the region, but in the amount of good players who grow up wanting to play there). They have better support from fans.

If I am James Franklin, I would only consider leaving if USC threw a ton of money at me with a massive buy out. Then before I accepted it, I'd go to Penn State and let them match. I'd rather stay in Happy Valley as a football coach.

^ tougher to win a natty at Penn St than it is at USC, though. That's the factor.

In the current college football landscape chasing a national title is a good way to end up unemployed. Not saying all coaches don't want to win one but the reality is that the way college football is right now it is a really short list that has a legit shot and if you are at one of those schools and you don't win a lot and right away you are going to get fired.

Very fair point. It's a real risk.

But also keep in mind: the school comes to you to ask you if you want it or not. You have to have a massive ego to have made it this far. And USC comes knocking on your door saying "we think you're the guy to take us back to national prominence, what do you say??"

Just sayin
