All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

Am I the only one on here where if Fleck leaves, he leaves, and I'm not really giving a shit.

I'm sensing two more losses against Iowa and Bucky this year. That would put him at 1-9 against them. I hope like hell to be wrong on that.

With a defense next year that probably still blows, a new offensive line and qb. I'm not exactly doing cartwheels here.

I really don't give a shit if he leaves.

His persona would fit well at USC, Hollywood, bright lights. His best players from his best year still were from the Kill era.

So you're saying he's excellent at player development, since those guys spent 3 years in his system? I agree.

And Kill got lucky that all that talent was in his backyard in one special senior class. And no way does Kill get Winfield here if Winfield senior hadn't played for the vikes. And Fleck had to re-recruit Winfield anyways.

Do you give a shit if he leaves? Not clear in your post.

No way in hell he gets offered the job. And why would he take the job when he's adored by many? How long do you think a HC with a .579 winning percentage would last in LA?

BTW: not directing those questions at you, kg21.

But I imagine his name getting mentioned is always good in contract negotiations.

Fleck is the best fb recruiter the u has ever had.

Another of CRG's sock puppets weighs in.

If he leaves were back to celebrating 6-6 seasons and having an empty student section

Long list in the LA Times. Short write-up on PJ. They don't seem to give him much of a shot...

He might be too quirky for the big city, but there’s a little magic in Fleck that’s going to take him further than Minnesota. USC would have to really whiff on its priority names to get to him at this point, though.

Sure seems like either Fickell or Franklin should say yes, for the reasons they mention. Maybe target Franklin first for the PoC aspect, or if they don't care about that Fickell sure seems to be kicking ass at a school like Cincinnati. I suppose he could wait to see if Day is going to flop this season, and potentially take over his dream job at OSU. Paradoxically though, that would probably mean Franklin wins the division and possibly conference.

I still can't believe Billy Napier's name hasn't been thrown out there.

something tells me USC fans want Pete back and dream of it like we dream of Dungy.

I know what you mean in a sense. PJ Fleck has not done well with defenses. In fact, Jerry Kill did a MUCH better job developing defenses that could stop Big Ten competition.

That said, I just feel like Fleck has what it takes to build a consistent winner here. And if we lose him you go right back to the drawing board again. Like we've done 8 million times already.

Keeping consistency is good for a program IMO. It has/will take time to build a winner here. We are not on one of the coasts, we don't pay players and are a middle of the road Big Ten university. Takes some patience.

In the past, I must admit I would be one of those people who would have thought, the Fleck era is over in Minnesota now that USC is showing interest, as it seems to be Murphy's Law when it comes to Minnesota Sports. Not that Fleck hasn't had enough success on/off the field to warrant serious consideration from USC, but I do feel there are other candidates who are a better fit for USC at this time. I also believe there are reasons why Fleck will give serious consideration for staying at the U of M and at the top of the list is the relationship between him and Coyle. Coyle has shown to be very loyal to PJ and has proven he is willing to invest in our football program as when he seemed to give PJ a blank check this year as to how many players he could have on his team in this Covid expanded year. I also think PJ sees the Twin Cities with all it's Corporations as a ripe opportunity to take advantage of the NIL. PJ has also stated numerous times that one of the reasons Iowa and Wisconsin continue to have success is that their football programs don't have a revolving door of coaching changes, so he knows how important stability at the HC is when it comes to regional recruiting success. Now if we could just have our local press write more positive stories about our program, but I digress.

Only thing dumber than his post is that the one like it received was from the other resident Fleck hater on the board Boomtime.
Not a Fleck hater at all. I just don't get all the hype. Again, if he gets beat again by Iowa and Bucky, he'll be 1-9.........and heading into next year with a new qb, a somewhat starting over offensive line, and another crap defense.

I'm neutral on the guy. We'd be starting over on a guy who can't beat his rivals, didn't win the west, etc. Ho-Hum

I'm just saying that I think we are in for an average season this year, and starting over next on a lot of offensive positions. It would be year 6 and kind of in a holding pattern.

Who knows, maybe we get on a roll in upcoming games. I'm very concerned about Fleck's defensive teams, which will never get us anywhere unless majorly improved.

that's what he has been 3 out of 4 years, and I'm getting the feeling it may be 4 out of 5.

It sucked at the time but turned out to be a blessing, and that was getting drilled by Illinois in 2018 which forced PJ to part ways with Robb Smith.

I don't think this is a ridiculous take. This year is important for PJ and the program because next year is likely a reloading year. I like PJ and I think he is a good coach.

For me, I think if you are at a school like the U and you have a guy you think is a good coach, you need to see the forest for the trees. Even if we are building on 6-6 or 7-5 seasons. Barry Alvarez was 33-31-4 (19-26-3) in his first seasons in the Big 10. He had that record during the 8 game Big 10 season era (more cupcakes). He essentially had 1 really strong season and another good one. He only had two seasons over .500 in the Big 10.

My point is that it takes awhile to build from "if everything breaks right, we could be good" to "we're a good football program" and I feel comfortable with PJ leading us towards that goal. In some ways, I think Gopher fans who expect us to be as good as Iowa or Wisconsin aren't much different than Nebraska fans expecting them to win the Big 10. Unfortunately, it's baby steps and the road isn't always smooth so it requires a bit of a leap of faith.

This. It takes time to build from the stars aligned and we had a good/great year to we expect to be in contention consistently.

A lot of ppl saying he won't get offered the job the ad has said he wants someone with clear ethical standards and respect, who can galvinize a locker room and inspire. I think Fleck does those 2 things better than anyone

Best post I've seen in a long time. Fans need to take a long-term approach. Whether we go 6-6 or 8-4 this year, something is being built here. Results take time, but if you believe in the process, results will come.
