All Things 2021 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

per Shooter:

Should the Minnesota Vikings lose to the favored Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday, and on the ensuing two Sundays to superior Seahawks and Browns in Minneapolis, it would be hard to imagine owners Zygi and Mark Wilf retaining coach Mike Zimmer.

The betting here is that Zimmer could be gone before Columbus Day (Oct. 11). Presumably, assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Andre Patterson would replace him on an interim basis.

If Zimmer, 65, is dismissed, the Vikings would be expected to bring in a young, dynamic, offensive-minded coach. And then, in the first round of next year’s draft, even if they’re still stuck with Kirk Cousins’ $35 million contract, it would seem the Vikings need to draft a quarterback. Kellen Mond, drafted in the third round last spring, doesn’t appear the answer to succeed Cousins.

The way it looks now, the Vikings will have a high pick in April’s NFL draft. Quarterbacks expected to be among the top dozen or so picks in the draft are Carson Strong of Nevada, Spencer Rattler of Oklahoma, Sam Howell of North Carolina and Malik Willis of Liberty.

Skol Vikes!!

Dalvin fumbled last week to lose the game. Why risk another play when 88% of those kicks are made. Not to mention don’t miss the EP and you’re not in the position to lose if you miss the kick.
88% is including the best kickers in the league. The Vikings don’t have one of the best kickers in the league. Like you said, he already missed an XP.

I will continue to say that moving the XP back in the NFL is one of the dumbest rule changes in all of sports. Why make kickers even more influential on the outcome of games? They see the field for what, 10-12 plays a game? Shouldn’t have as much impact on a game as they do.

Harbaugh, a Super Bowl winning coach, shows why you always go for it on 4th and 1.

Good win by the Ravens.

So he’s clearly inconsistent.
Made 53 yarder last week to send the game to OT.

I think y'all just being silly. Same with the going for it on 4th and 1.

Weak armchair talk. No one is happy about the loss. But the season ain't over, far from it. They were supposed to get smoked, and nearly (should have) won it.

Never said the season is over.

I think moving the extra point back was brilliant. No one ever missed one, now it’s like 9 of 10. Plus there should be an advantage for going for 2 and now there is a significant yardage advantage even if the success advantage is still not great.

That’s after Kansas City already fumbled inside of field goal range. Plus who doesn’t go for it when your playing against Mahomes? If I’m going against Sam Darnold I’m punting the ball 100% of the time, but not against Mahomes.

The only time you don't go for it on 4th and 1 is when you need a field goal to tie/win and there's little time on the clock.

You should even go for it on 4th and 1 at your own 9 yard line. If you punt, the other team will be in or close to FG range already. There is a minimal benefit to punting.

Field position is greatly diminished with modern passing.

After yesterday’s game I decided that it’s easier being a timberwolves fan than a Vikings fan. With the wolves you get the NBA (if that’s your thing) and they are dependable and predictable. Plus there’s some intermittent gratification when they spring a few upsets every season. The off seasons, which are the real seasons for wolves fans, are always full of hope and possibilities (see: Simmons, Ben).
The Vikings just destroy you.

I have no idea but it shouldn’t matter.

It absolutely matters. When leadership consistently relies on game winning field goals, and never has a kicker that can make them, that's on the leadership.

Who cares if he made one to tie last week, they still lost. If he makes the XP yesterday it at least goes into overtime. That's not his fault?

Regardless it's a systematic issue that won't be resolved until Spielman and Zimmer are gone.

 at trying to pretend a single pick six encompasses the entirety of how our defense played against their offense, and how their offense performed.

FFS

A pick six, as something above and beyond "just" an int, is nothing more than luck.

Change the stat to "just" an int, and get back to us. Or better yet, change that line to reflect how many yards and points they scored against our D, and get back to us.

I will never agree with this. Making a player that barely sees the field just that more important to the outcome of games makes little sense to me.

I wonder if we'll have Vikings fans who decide to start watching the Gophers this year so they can see some winning football.

Probably not. Those who aren't watching would rather stand by and wait for a loss, then jump on twitter to call Fleck the next Brewster.

Vikings had three very short drives offensively yesterday that resulted in punts.

Each of those drives started with an offensive lineman penalty putting them at a longer distance to go.

The Vikings didn't get a first down on any of those.

The Oline penalties had more to do with losing than the kicker.

If it would have led to more 2 point conversions, I might like it more. But of course none of these coaches will do that.

Honestly, this almost makes the loss worth it. Just how does an NFL play-by-play guy mess it up that bad? Uhh, how about wait a half second for the refs to signal?

Other announcing errors I heard this weekend, Mike Grimm while in the redzone said the Gophers have a 3rd and 7 from the 6. That doesn't seem possible. Otherwise Grimm is solid, IMO.

Drew Brees called Carolina QB Sam Darnold, Sam "Bradford" to open Football Night in America. It's early but Brees really looks out of his element in the studio. He also could not contain his glee that Winston struggled mightily in Week 2
