All Things Pharrel Payne Recruiting Thread (Class of 2022; Gophers Have Offered)

Agreed. That’s why I listed the other points. The others aren’t wasting their time cause he’s a MN lean would be last on the reasons I listed to why he’s not being recruited more.
"No one really saw him as a Junior. Not many in the market for a big or they already have there’s that they’ve built previous relationships with."

First I have no problem with and I assume is true, just due to the circumstances of pandemic if nothing else. But I also don't see that as any kind of limiting factor for any big school.

Second, I have no way to dispute the second half of this, and could well be true that they've already placed their bets on others. Not many in the market? Seems hard to swallow, for a critical position.

Not many scholarships given to true 5s. Many aren’t taking them in 2022 due to the free year given. Like Badger said, many made their evals and chose to not proceed too. My buddies who’ve seen him this summer absolutely rave about him. In many cases the lack of offers would worry me, but this year is so weird it doesn’t.

And i do not care that the elite programs and coaches are not interested. Sure it validates evals but we do not get those kids anyway so we find kids that may become elite

Payne is interesting. Ryan James clearly loves him. Very young for his grade and supposedly getting stronger and improving at a rapid rate. He plays on a lower level travel team that has events that always conflict with events featuring bigger teams with many more high major talents. So he is under the radar from that aspect as coaches can only be so many places at once so it is true that many teams have not had a live evaluation of him. What I don't know is does he look good to James (and others) because of the competition? We know that even marginal high major bigs often feast on mid and low major bigs during non-conference play in college basketball. It is clear he quickly passed all the other bigs in Minnesota on this staff's priority list including guys that have (or had) some decent offers.

If we can get Pharrel in for an official this summer, before school starts I can strongly believe we lock him up. Do the same thing they did with braeden, bring him to the barn, take him out to dinner with some players, and even bring in Carrington for a day. It shouldn’t be that hard but you never know I guess.

This wasn't the case this year for his team MN Select. They played in some quality events and Payne had his best games against perennial EYBL power Georgia Stars and Adidas squad Mass Rivals. Both teams had HM bigs he had to match up with. Not to mention playing D1MN and MN Fury locally a number of times.

Would be another nice building block.

He's an "under the radar" recruit, I'm told.

That only warrants a McD's gift card. Thinking $35 tops.

Pharrel Payne will be visiting the U August 21st-23rd. Need to lock him down. I don’t care what anyone says about his offer list or what AAU team he played on. The kid has a relentless motor and is very strong for his age. He’s a very good finisher and has a great feel for positioning. Horse on the glass too which is a must in the big ten. I can’t wait to see him in maroon and gold. Lock him down BJ!

Does he have an A&M visit scheduled? What about Drake or Loyola? Just wondering, the free public 247 site doesn't show any visits yet.

My understanding is no other visits scheduled but he has already taken an official visit to Loyola.

I’m sorry guys. I was thinking this was the JOJ thread. I’m confusing myself now. Payne has not taken any other visits that I am aware of. I believe he was planning to visit Texas A&M and several others because I was reading his dad wanted to enjoy the free trips. I doubt any of those visits will happen!

On the other hand, JOJ was the one who took the official visit to Loyola. Sorry for the confusion.

All good!

Bolded: LOL! :D

Lol! I thought that was funny too but I apparently I can’t share anything I read on 247 on here anymore.
You absolutely can. Don't listen to party poopers

It's all coming out anyway, and it's not like RJ is the source of any of the info. It's other people choosing to tell him every iota of it. Why should he be the sole person who gets to profit off it?

Visits always go well. Literally 99% of them.
Reporter X: How did your visit go?
Player Y: It was underwhelming. Coach didn't have a very impressive vision, and the facilities were a little dated. They signed a 4 star at my position last year so there is competition to get on the court. I don't think I can see myself here.
