This isn't going as planned

Craig Smith was the correct choice then, and he's still the correct choice now.

Not a single thing that has happened since the two hires, has disproven that. Because, duh.

The proof will be in the pudding. Dave Thorson would be here now with CS, exactly the same.
He likely was the correct choice. But Thorson would not likely be here with him. Perhaps Tim Miles would. In any event, he would have a good staff.

They connect via Niko. Who was an assistant for Miles at the same time CS was. You know all this, it's been gone over in all the tens of thousands of posts on GH about why CS made sense as the next coach of the Gophers.

He would come back ... for the U. Full stop. You don't think Niko would put in a good word for CS? Obviously he'd want to keep him at CO St, but it would be a homecoming and major upgrade for DT and he wouldn't hold him back from that by lying about CS.

No doubt Coyle had a little grinch snicker moment about how hard he'd troll everyone who wasted weeks of life on those posts ...
Believe what you want. Thorsen wasn't leaving Niko unless it was for a Ben Johnson and that job was better than CSU. He's got a young daughter whom he was not going to make move again. Dave is past the moving up the ladder stage in his career and wants to work with certain people. Doesn't matter either way now anyways, he's here and we are lucky to have him.

I doubt Coyle feels any pressure with the hire for MBB.

What he's counting on is Fleck bringing some respectability and consistency to the football program so that no one pays attention to the Johnson hire.

Football pays the bills at most P5 programs not named Duke/Kentucky/Kansas.

As who planned? A group of message board posters that expect the U to bring back everyone in the portal that have played on a court in Minnesota?

Of course Ben has not gotten every player he had hoped to get, but the ones he has do fit his culture and will develop a foundation for his style. He is developing good lines of communication with top local and national players. He has a very good coaching staff.

It is very shortsighted and naive to declare his plan has already failed.
He is scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel for recruits. Heck they won’t even have enough players to play 5 on 5 at practice right now with some walk ons.

Kentucky football is bigger than you think.. sec man....

People are stressing over 2022 when way more than half of the power 6 teams do not have a single recruit .
How many of those teams need a whole new team to come out of this next recruiting class?

They have 7 open scholarships for next year. I don't think 5-6 high school players is too out of the ordinary.

Yep. 2 guys have committed from the state and you would think the entire 2022 recruiting class is filled at every school across the country by the way some of the people talk on here.

So they are not playing basketball this fall and winter. I could have sworn they were going to field a team in 2021/2022. Right now it’s about 8 guys and I would argue half of them don’t belong in the big ten. This will be the worst team to ever play basketball at the University of Minnesota.
He better hope he gets recruits in 2022 cause otherwise they are going to be worse in 2022/2023.
My humble opinion Ben is gone with 4 years, but I hope i am wrong.

Which 8 guys are on the roster?

very few if any. Ben could fill fast but it is about getting the guys he wants.
Thank you. So the fact that we are hurting for players more than other power 6 teams who haven't got verbals yet, means that we need players worse. We had better get rolling. There is every reason for concern considering that we appear to have a dumpster rental roster.

I do agree we need to get rolling but it’s still early July. I’d say (lowballing it) that 85% of the class has not committed yet. I still believe that we will have one or two by the end of the July. We’ve also had some nice out of state kids come visit as well. I’m watching and anxious cause I want some good news, but it’s still early for 2022. Covid did no favors for kids not being able to take visits during their junior years either.

I’ll disagree with this and I think the hiring of Ben Johnson was straight up horrendous.

Coyle took a huge risk with the hire and he is going give Johnson a leash longer than 3 years to prove he didn’t screw it up.
Coyle took a huge risk in a pandemic environment and made a cheap hire that is high risk high reward. If he is already showing that he isn’t going to fulfill his upside in year 3 by having another bottom of the big ten season he is gone unless he has a huge recruiting class lined up to have definite success in year 4.

I have no idea what the program will look like three years from now. I am confident that the style of basketball will look very different this year, regardless of the talent level. The ball dominant point guard, endless perimeter weave, clanking, joyless, no ball movement, no perimeter defense style of play will be gone. In terms of style, whatever replaces it has to be better.

It is not fan police, it is just getting tired of those gripping about stuff they assume is taking place, before we have even played a game.
But they are griping about things that HAVE happened. No one is complaining about the games that haven’t happened. Seems odd to not want to discuss real tangible things like players coming and going, recruits going elsewhere, official visits, etc.

Kind of like this bs topic where Ben Johnson is once again dragged through the mud?
It's amazing how sarcasm is lost on those who want Ben Johnson to fail.
Piss poor attempt at sarcasm, but you do you.
I am 100% okay with the BJ hire and in no way want him to fail. Not sure where you got that from. I will wait a few years for shitty results before I utter a negative word about any coach. That's just me.

Honest question for you. How many of those 8 guys have you watched play any meaningful minutes?

Hey...at least we know where you stand...
It's funny how my comments brought out the beast I'm you.

OK. I was wrong. It happens. Occasionally ;)

I think there could be more than a zero percent chance, but fine.

These posts seem to be implying that every recruit is completely unsure, completely open to go anywhere .... until suddenly they commit.

I doubt that is actually the case for most, if not all recruits. So it should still be reasonable to say something like "most of the 2022 MN class has little to any actual interest in the Gophers" without them having yet committed. Not saying that is the case, just throwing out the point.

So all the assumptions of him not having any idea what he is doing; doesn't have a plan; was just hired because he is....; had any chance of getting Garcia, King or Heide; wanted to keep all of the old players; can't find anyone interested in the U; etc, etc, etc are all totally tangible?

It is very easy to criticize and complain. Like Built said, Ben has no problem filling a roster of respectably rated kids, but he is looking for "his" type of players. One of the problems is that many other coaches are doing the same thing. It is like looking at PJ vs Brewster. The brew just wanted the highest rated players he could get, PJ wants the best players with the best attitude no matter their rating.

Yeah it’s tough to call Ben a cheap hire with what we paid him. We could’ve gotten Smith, Gates, and many others.
What was the deal with Gates? Stopped following after we hired Ben. I see he re-upped with Cleveland State in May.

I know people were talking Boston College and here, obviously he passed and/or was not offered at those places.

Waiting to take over Florida State?

At least learn to count or check your assumptions before you post!
View attachment 13273Fine 12 guys on the roster and when exactly is Parker Fox playing? Plus Eric Currey has had chronic knee issues, I would not count on him being a rock and playing 35 minutes a game. Can you agree that this roster looks on paper to be the worst roster in the history of the program?
