Gabe to Iowa State

Been there, done that in life. I get it to some degree. But I also believe in completing what you started. Did Gabe graduate already? If not, he didn't fulfill the latter.

I suspect that Iowa State has the typical minimum 30 credit requirement to get a degree from there.

Wow! Just checked the official Gopher sports site to check on his major (usually that's mentioned on the player's page) and his entry is gone! The other players entering the portal are still there. Guess they didn't waste anytime after it was confirmed.

I believe he is the only one who has committed to a program They probably think that if players haven't officially done that, there is a chance of them staying.

That's what I figured but they sure didn't waste any time. You think they could have waited until Monday.

Maybe as good as they were going to get. It's not a great job right now. There is a faithful fan base that's crazy about Hilton Magic but the programs not in good shape right now nor is it as good a P5/6 job as the fans think. Our AD caught lightning in a bottle with the Hoiberg hire, this hire just needs to be okay and get us out of the basement. Hire might be good in the sense that there was a need for someone to hit the ground running and Otz has been at ISU before and had success in recruiting. First order of biz was to get in some transfers so we could actually have players next year (partly done with some decent transfers in) and to keep our best commit for 2021 (done). There aren't going to be any homeruns from the portal for a team coming off 0-18.

BTW, saw a couple of my fellow fans thinking this is some sort of inroad into Minnesota recruits. I don't, it's probably a one-off. Transfer Royce White worked out for Hoiberg but beyond that you have to go all the way back to Jake Sullivan to find a Minnesota player of note at ISU. It's not Big 12 country. New assistant Kyle Green recruited Minnesota kids to UNI but that's mid-major talent, not necessarily Big 10 or Big 12 level recruits. ISU used to recruit Minnesota well in WBB but not so lately with the Big 10 becoming a stronger women's conference.
When Otz came to Brookings, he did a great job of connecting with the community and the students. A big change from Scott Nagy, who didn't have a great personality. In his time with the Jacks, he was a very good offensive coach. The defense wasn't great, but with Daum and Jenkins,Jr. it made sense to try and win by out-scoring teams. Didn't watch enough of his Vegas teams to know if he concentrated more on defense, though I did see he benched Jenkins for while because of his defensive shortcomings.

Defense alone should not get you starter minutes, especially at guard. It's the exact same reason Okogie is getting inconsistent bench minutes with the Wolves.

Was Gabe told he would be getting bench only minutes?

Okogie is a bad defensive player. He is a hustle player, but (by just about every metric) he is a bad defensive player.

Maybe Gabe is on track to graduate from the U so he can spend a year somewhere else. He certainly had some good moments. I don't understand why everyone feels like he was such a good defender. If so why was he never on an ALL defensive team? Or maybe he was?

I don't really want to take the time to look it up, but if you're genuinely curious, you can look at the numbers of the people he defended. They almost always had an off night.

Gabe was a very good perimeter defender.

On a different note. . .

We are going to be a terrible team, so I'm not sweating losing anyone from like a W/L standpoint. But this does (and I think should) rub people the wrong way. I have a feeling that all of the people saying they love Ben Johnson might not end up putting their money where their mouth is. If Ben Johnson cannot drastically improve in-state recruiting - - then what was this hire all about? Obviously it's early and it's only one data point, but I do think this is a negative point for the U's hire and Ben Johnson.

I really wanted Gabe back because I felt he would’ve been an awesome building block of our new culture. I’ve given up trying to explain to people on here how good of a perimeter defender he was on here. Sucks for Ben but I’m willing to see what 2022 recruiting brings

I'm in the exact same boat. The 2022 class should be fun.

Fresh starts can help, but you have to realize that to a certain extent you make the bed you lay in..

You mean the imaginary Gabe who wanted to remain here and play with a new coach and a new team instead of the actual Gabe who didn't?

People will laugh at this, but I agree. Lot of y'all need to bite your tongue's, going on social media after a tough loss and spewing out emotional comments towards a certain player are reason's why Minnesota kids don't want to play here with that target on their backs
At every even halfway bigtime program kids are going to get thrashed if they don't perform. If they can't take it they shouldn't play D1 or they need to stay off the internet.

I guess Durant is the exception to this rule.
🤣🤣🤣

Is there a time frame by which a player has to decide to remove his name from the portal or sign to play for another college?

Agree - the optics are bad. We're not going to be very good in 2021. It seems like a given. So Ben is going to HAVE to recruit the state well for 2022. That's why he was brought in. Getting players away from some of the blue bloods that are after the in state class is going to be a tall task, but gotta get it done.

Looked at the bio, still listed in previous years roster, and he's a marketing/business major.

Thank you! I was interested because I was wondering how compatible his old major would be at his new school and whether he would have to take additional credits than the usual minimum residency to graduate but that one would be workable almost anywhere.

We know all of them won't. I'm concerned most of them won't. Empty meaningless platitudes in that case.

Iowa State has a decent undergraduate business college. My hot take, without looking, is that for post-graduate level that Carlson at the U would be better.

We have two graduating seniors in WBB with biz/marketing degrees. One entered the portal to transfer for grad school. Wanting to see if Minnesotan Kristen Scott starts a career, stays for another year at ISU or transfers for post-graduate study somewhere else.

Ryan James from Gopher Illustrated was on KFAN with Gaard on Sunday morning.

He said (paraphrasing) - after digging into the situation, this is something Gabe has been looking at for a long time - well before the coaching change. Gabe just wanted a fresh start - for school, sports, life, the whole package. No reflection on Johnson or Thorson - but by the time the new coaches were hired, Gabe had already made up his mind to leave. At least that's what James believes.

on the Gophers in general, James seemed fairly positive. He said Johnson will bring in players to get through next year, but it's all about the 2022 recruiting class in MN, and he said Johnson is working hard on a lot of the top players in that class, and has a shot to land several of the better players in the state.

James also raved about Thorson as a coach, and the other new assistant.
Thanks for sharing. Not a great signal to other kids who might be wondering what it is like to stay home.

Maybe we try with a less confrontational approach? Ayo scored 32 the last time out and Dj had 21 on 12 shots, so "always" seems like a stretch.

I'll ask again if you or perhaps someone less abrasive can hypothesize the reason for the massive disconnect in his advanced stats and the public perception of his defense?
Ayo had 32 his 2nd gane versus us and 10 the first time. The difference, Gabe played in the first game and was injured in the 2nd and thus did not play.

In that OSU game, I can only guess: we won by 17, so perhaps it was schematic. Washington was 5/7 on 3s and 2/2 n Free throws (for 17 of his 21). He was also limited to 1 assist and had 3 turnovers. His quote, “I think we came into the game thinking it was going to be easier to come in here and run our stuff.”

So perhaps, we strategically took away penetration? And he responded by nailing 3s (or perhaps they were some late game 3s).

I'm a Ben Johnson backer, and I agree this is not a good outcome. He recruited Gabe, they both went to De La Salle (where our new assistant was the legendary coach), and he sold Coyle on the idea of making us a destination for hometown kids.

Even more, I could understand if Gabe didn't want to be part of a rebuild and transferred to:
1. A sterling academic school (Stanford/Ivies/Vandy).
2. A good location (UCLA/Miami/San Diego State/Colorado)
3. A blue blood for a chance at a deep run (Gonzaga/Kansas/Duke/UNC/Kentucky)

Iowa State is none of those. Wisconsin or Iowa would have hurt more, but are at least winning programs. Just baffling.

The "Legend of Kalshuer's Defense" grew with every clanked 3 pointer.

Honestly, the fact that he's a starting athlete, B1G and now Big 12? That will open up sooooooooo many doors for him, so it doesn't matter which business school is better.

He can get a job right away doing medical device sales for example and clear 100k easy his first year easy if not a lot more.

Of course the one that wants to be here.

Yes, but the point is that Gabe doesn't exist. The actual Gabe certainly would not have been a good building block to a new culture because he didn't want to be here.

Let me give an analogy. It's common for people to mourn over a lost love because they think how happy they were and how happy the two of them could have been together in the future. However, that's erroneous thinking because that couple doesn't exist anymore. The reality is that at least one them would deeply resent being forced together and the other one would grow to hate that person because of the bad attitude.

Lol you’re being too deep. I am only speaking in terms of having a kid who works very hard, defends his tail off, and is a good student/citizen. That’s why I liked him here to build the culture. The obvious assumption is he is here cause he wants to be. He obviously does not because he transferred.
