Next Gopher Head Coach

Was he fired? I expect him to be back at Texas...
Texas fan base has been grumbling about him for a few years now, and getting upset by a 14 seed in the first round probably won't quiet that down at all.

Yeah I get it but they were a top 10 team in the country this year. I find it ironic that someone who thinks it was a risk we fired Pitino after he has solidified us as being a bottom 4 program in the B1G would think that Smart should be fired after having a top 10 team in the country.

Shooter weighs in:

-Gopher fans pining for Eric Musselman, but U waited too long.
-Now Brian Dutcher is people's choice.
-Hearing whispers that Coyle's early choice is Craig Smith.
-Smith has already met with Utah, they are expected to pay in the $2.75-3.25 million range.
-Porter Moser may wind up at Creighton if Greg McDermott resigns. He's an alumni.
-Possible assistants for Dutcher would include Ben Johnson, Ryan Saunders and Barry Wohler.
-Anthony Grant could be in line for Miami job if that opens up, and is a candidate at Marquette.
-Less expensive options for Gophers include Howard Eisley, Sam Mitchell and Dennis Gates.
-Sam Mitchell credited with recruiting James Wiseman at Memphis.
-Jarvis Omersa could end up playing basketball and football at St. Thomas.

That's an awful lot of information for a little birdy to carry. Must have been a passenger pigeon.

Just read Doogie's last tweet....is that a clue?

Ben Johnson....I would love it!!

I have no idea how to embed a tweet on here....he said a lot of movement yesterday....now he brings up Ben...

Frequent lurker here, but I've been surprised not to see Shantay Legans mentioned more in these conversations. He has a good record at Eastern Washington over four seasons, and especially in the last two. Gave Kansas a game yesterday.

Perhaps he's thought of as a West Coast guy, but EWU has to be a tough place to recruit, even by Big Sky standards.
He's good, but I like Joe Pasternack better. He's built UCSB, and I was impressed with their talent level (including size) yesterday. Joe Golding from ACU is also good, and not just because they beat Texas yesterday. He's tight with Chris Beard, and similar tough grinder type of coach. But he'll probably stay in the area.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Many days into MN search, it’s evident that Ben has a lot of support. He’d energize many alums, would recruit his behind off. Talent trumps all &amp; he’d get talent here. Checks many of Coyle’s boxes. I keep circling back to this Reusse tweet Feb. 25. Will be interesting. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Gophers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Gophers</a> <a href="https://t.co/LyIjg4ztaH">https://t.co/LyIjg4ztaH</a></p>&mdash; Darren Wolfson (@DWolfsonKSTP) <a href="https://twitter.com/DWolfsonKSTP/status/1373653588921229322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 21, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Ben Johnson was Doogies source for Gopher news while he was here so Im not surprised he wants him here. Are we even sure hes a good coach? Xavier is 23-27 in the big east in 3 years and hasnt made the big dance.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks....I had no idea how to put that Tweet in here. It might very well be nothing....but interesting Doogie mentioned circling back to Pat's Tweet from a month ago after he said a lot of movement yesterday afternoon. I would certainly love to give Ben Johnson a shot. Some people say he is no different than Pitino....but you know what....he has more relationships built in Minnesota already than Pitino or any of the other candidates. I don't see how he is anymore of a risk than Gates. So if he went to NSEW Virginia next year and make the tournament then he would be a good candidate? I say go for it!! He is young...up and coming young assistant who has serious ties to Minnesota. That's how you get these guys like Garcia, Sims, Wright and so on to stay in Minnesota. To me...he is a possible homerun hire,

Hiring Ben Johnson as HC would be absolutely ridiculous. If this is the best Coyle could do then Coyle should be fired too.

Did we have any idea Whalen was going to be a good coach?????

But if goes to a low major like St Thomas and has one good year then it would be an excellent hire?

Ben Johnson couldn't recruit the MN kids when he was here and apparently that's a requirement to many.

He missed on Jones x2, vaughn, Travis, macura, trent, sims...just a few off the top of my head

We got Coffey because of him...

They fired Rick Barnes, who did much better at Texas for a much longer period of time. I don't think they'll fire him either, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did.

Gates' press conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10.

Book it.
This would be bad hire IMO. 2 years HC. 500ish record. One losing season followed by one winning season. We can't hire a successful coach with more than 2 seasons as a track record? Not sure where all the love for Gates is coming from nor where all his 'upside' is located.

That was Pitino by the way....

Regardless, if the point is Johnson has great odds of landing top in state talent i would question that assumption being that he was on staff for 5 years and of those 5 we got Coffey and missed on the rest
