Take some stabs at this one...it wont be long and we will be searching for a new coach.

My short list:

Eric Mussleman - Arkansas (HC)
Andy Fox - Vanderbilt (Director of B-ball Operations - Worked under assistant coach Ed Conroy)
Niko Medved - HC Colorado St.

If there is going to be a new coach, I want the search to be wide-open. It doesn't have to be someone with a prior connection to the program.

In fact, I think I would prefer a fresh start and a fresh approach.

get the best coach they can find who wants to take the job. No problem with a young up-and-comer type. Just get the best coach possible. Doesn't have to have a MN connection, and doesn't have to have a famous last name.

Amen to the part in bold!!! Go find the best guy who wants to be here. Now that being said of course out of the realistic candidates who would come here, I probably favor Craig Smith who is a MN guy lol.

Disagree we will have a new coach anytime soon. We have a very good roster and are likely to have a good year. Even if we don't, we are talking about an athletic department in deep financial issues just like everyone else.

I think it would take a complete dumpster fire of a year for Pitino to get fired after this season even if Coyle wants to move on internally. I personally expect a good year and doubt we see a new coach until 2022 at the earliest.

Or a Billy Donovan or Coach K? More than likely you will miss and not get that guy, but I don't think there is a higher success rate by hiring a coach who's from the same state or went to the school. In many cases the alumni hire has gone terribly.

Yeah I doubt they are buying out a coach during COVID. Revenue will be taking a hit across athletics and they won't add that to the total.

Coyle punted when he had the chance. Not gonna happen barring epic collapse.

I don’t see Pitino leaving anytime soon. Gophers make the tourney this year and finish in the 6-8 range in the Big Ten, return nearly everybody in 2021-22 and finish in the top 4 in the conference. Everybody will be praising Pitino at that time.

I think we are giving a lot of grace to this group of guys. I personally don't see a ton of talent on this roster.

Carr yes he is good. All of our transfers are decent, they did not however blow any doors off where they were before. Gach scored 10 a game for a mediocre team who lost to Coastal Carolina and Tulane. Liam is the best hope of improvement. Hope he can make a jump to a physical big 10. Mashburn we will have to see. If they cant shoot the 3 ball, like has been history, its another year of them playing right to their potential which is somewhere around 8-11 in teh big ten at best.

So far, we don’t have a game scheduled. Doubtful Pitino gets fired for performance
in the current situation.

Even PJ has won only one game navigating Covid. Gopher basketball may just surprise you...if we get to practice and get clearance to play an opponent.

I am on the time to move in from Pitino bandwagon. Pandemic probably saved him this year and might have saved him for the 2021-22 season also.

Not the time for this thread. If the season goes even halfway decent, Pitino will be back. There are major $$ issues almost everywhere. The coaching carousels will be much quieter than normal.

Everyone would praise two top 4 finishes in a decade ?

Guys let’s be real about this, the school won’t be able to afford to buy him out of his contract after the covid related financial hit this year.

I get what you're saying but to me what's more important than the entire resume of Pitino is where the program is now and the outlook of the next 2 to 3 years.

In this hypothetical scenario, if we had a top 6 and then a top 4 finish in the conference, I wouldn't really care what happened 5 years prior. Those finishes would tell me the program is very healthy and trending up and I'd commend Pitino for a good job.

The same would be true if we had the opposite situation with a very successful coach like Izzo or Painter. I wouldn't care if they have had a put together multiple years of success 5 years ago, if they put together two or three years in a row of bottom of the conference basketball I'd feel the program is trending down and in need of a coaching change.

Personally, I don't think Pitino should have gotten the leash he has up until this point, but that's neither here nor there. The program appears to be trending up with the talent on the roster and recruiting. Let's see how it pans out. I have high hopes this year.

Damian Johnson in 2030 after Pitino leaves for a blue blood school.

His buyout will be almost nothing. But they won't have the money to lure anyone who's an upgrade.

I can see your view. I just do not think everyone would see it that way. For me a 6th and then a 4th is not a strong enough trend for me to think we have something special. Winning the conference on the other hand buys a ton of equity and for me proves a great deal. I also have high hopes for this year.

Kind've weird to talk about replacing him when his record this year so far is 0-0
