All Things Kerwin Walton Recruitment Thread (Class of 2020)

Why ? No one else has taken it. I would have gone first come first serve from the beginning.
Never worked with me with women or in business to appear desperate - they need to want you. There are
hard wotds do this, but this is a soft appriach. To wit-
.K, you,'ve been my main guy all the time. Not a non first choice, lke for other programs. I need help here with this last scholly I got and u cn be that guy, but I gotta get a contributor for this year and those are few and far between now. Come here and build eithh me, be the next piece of the puzzle after Danny and Gabe. You will be a legend. Well shoot as many J's as you want - I Know you want this - let's go Sweet 16 next year then Elite 8 - all the MN Hooper's look up to you and they'll follow you lead. I need your decision by 10 pm CST, if I don't hear from you that is a No then. Regardless, know I am proud of and I what you accomplished at Hopkins and am only a phone call away.

Coach P out -

ABC - Always Be Closing. Sell him till he wants you, just like you would a client or a woman.

Still going on a coaches prediction and the fact he did not jump at the glamour offer.
This was the prediction prior to Saturday, right?

Obviously we know something major happened on Saturday.

No one has this much trouble simply making a decision, and is completely radio silent. That’s just absurd.

Pretty confidant coach Pitino has said all that could be said, how he would be used, playing in front of family and friends, getting a degree, building a winner, getting the most out of him.

Sometimes, when making a hard decision, all you have to do is imagine how you would feel if one of the choices was no longer available.

Let’s say in Kerwin’s case, imagine UNC pulled their offer. Is he relieved or upset, and how strong is that feeling? Now imagine Minnesota pulled their offer. Is he upset or relieved, and how strong is that feeling. Do the same for any other school in the mix. Then compare the answers and the offer he is most upset about losing is where he should go to school.

My point was in sales you need to know when to push people to get them to say yes;. Recruiting is sales in my opinion. I worked on health economics research in the phatma industry and was on the call with a client of mine regarding a decent sized deal - 6 figures - and the pharms
acompany loved our presentation and gave mane "buy signs" and there was somilence at the end so I jumped in and asked are there any other questions, there were none, so I said let's move forward - they agreed and had their legal team contact us later in the week - I asked for the order. Pitino by giving Walton a deadline is giving him a deadline closing technique. Advertisers use it all the time. This a deal won't last for long a limited supply, you need to create urgency with some buyers - huge amount of pysch reading with sakes ptos - much more detailed than what is normally perceived.

Believe you. I know coaches that from the very beginning of the process let all recruits that the offers are first come, first serve. Of course that works when you have identified enough kids that you think will help you win games. No matter who you get, you have to win. Fans tend to over rate the recruits that their program gets.

I agree! I'm pretty sure walton will eventually make a decision and hopefully it's best for him. I dont think whatever 5 schools he has on list would be bad, but this has to go down as the most bizarre recruitment ever.

Although I understand that approach works with most people, I know in my experience, every single time I've gotten the impression somebody is trying to push me into a decision (closing me) it's always been a Hard No for me and I immediately move on to the next option. Whoever pushes me the least and is the softest sales job, almost always gets my business. That way I'm positive that this is what I wanted and not something I took because somebody put some pressure on me. If I missed out, so be it. I always assume something else I like will come along eventually. I'm pretty patient and optimistic. I know, I'm probably a weird duck!

To clarify further the sales process doesn't truely kick in till the middle. I would tell prospects in the beginning I don't know if I'm a good bit for you as a supplier or not that's what the intial call us about ( like a first date, if you will). You find out we hat us important to them and our your best foot forward, for some it works for some it doesn't. From my perspective as a sales/B.D. guy that's why Fleck is successful, he doesn't try be to be all things to all prospects, some fit, some don't. I've worked with firms that were never the cheapest in their industry, so that first meeting us to qualify them as a prospect. If we miss Walton and Peterson ( rice) I'd prefer to bank it unless a real live recruit poos up and Pitino says I'm gonna roll with what I got. May be he becomes a better coach, job pressure has made me improve in the past and I bet Coyle knows how make him squirm just enough.

If you get Walton after Dan and Amir with Treyton coming in (go Alex's) maybe that puts aside the can't recruit bug name MN kids. I think Jarvis would have been a hella PG as well.

The approach with teenagers may be different. Nearly every kid has a dream school, dream coach and unless a kid wants to stay home you are not getting the kids those schools want. The coaches i am most familiar with that have elite success identify, offer and keep identifying until filled. They promise the chance to attend a elite University, contend for playing time in a winning program with great expectations, great facilities, a honor code and a grueling academic road. They show them how they would be used, they use former families and players to speak to the experience in becoming a man on and off the court. Are they up for the challenge. He ends up with a bunch of guys that have a great deal of passion to learn, to compete.

Marcus chimes in:

Much of the weekend was spent with the Gophers waiting on Hopkins guard Kerwin Walton’s decision. The mystery surrounding the recruitment of one of the nation’s top unsigned seniors continues.

Walton’s announcement failed to come as expected Saturday. No updates on the process came Sunday from the four-star prospect. Walton and his family had been struggling late Saturday to decide between the Gophers and North Carolina, according to sources with knowledge.

It’s unclear now, though, if Walton’s decision is down to a two-program race. His finalists also included Arizona, Creighton, Georgetown and Vanderbilt.

“Walton is one of the best shooters from deep, regardless of class, in America,” Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi said. “He’s also got tremendous size and a big frame. He’s a skilled scorer who always seems to get open for clean looks. He can come in and help out [any program] right away.”

The Gophers are hoping to land another wing with their final open scholarship, but they missed out Sunday on George Mason graduate transfer Justin Kier, who committed to Georgia over Minnesota and North Carolina State.

That still leaves the possibility of landing Walton, who averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds and made the Star Tribune All-Metro first team this year.

Go Gophers!!

My apologies, i did a poor job of communicating my point. I believe I mentioned it isn't a hard sell: no offense to anyone's profession, but I'm talking about tracking u done on a car lot or in a best. Buy. I'm referring to having a sales meeting with Sr. Level people at brand names like Merck, Phizer, GSK and back in my MN days 3M and BN(Burlington Northern). These folks aren't suspetible to closing techniques like what I previously mentioned or where you push the pen to them intimating that the should sign, but at a certain time after answering all their questions satisfactolly, you need to ask for the order as ND close just like the pretty girl who has eyed you all night - people respond to confidence.

I spent 15 years in research so I love it, great book to read on sales is Spin Selling - was required at one of my first jobs and made me a good amount of dough- based on research of what works and doesn't.

It's a big freakin' decision. If he's not ready to make it, he's not ready.

Personally, I would rather see any recruit wait until they're certain - as opposed to making a verbal commitment, and then changing their mind a couple of weeks later.

Measure twice, cut once. I heard that in shop class over 45 years ago. I'm still not sure what it means. (I was terrible in shop.....)

I read somewhere his mom wants him to stay home and his dad wants him to go to UNC. Not gonna go back and try to find the link so take it for what you think it's worth. But I do know one thing: if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!
