All Things Bowl Game Speculation

Wisconsin will not want the Rose bowl and they dont want them either. Back room politics will put Wisky in the Orange bowl and Psu will not go west. Its tv and the Rose bowl will want viewers. We are still in play for that. Osu wants #1 and will be succesful in crushing Wisconsin too.
We lost the Rose Bowl when we lost to Wisconsin.

IMHO, if it isn't the Rose or Orange you say thanks but no thanks.
The most important aspect of playing in a bowl game is that the NCAA allows you to have 15 practices to prepare for it.

That's an extra 15 practices, basically an extra spring ball. Way too important to say "no, thanks".

the other good thing is with the fan base energized Minnesota will travel better than they ever have and with the young coach and the receivers they're pretty attractive team to get I say they go to the Outback Bowl

I could be wrong, but I don't think the Gophers are likely to go to the Citrus because they played there in 2014 and the bowl agreement says they want 5 diff B1G teams over a 6-year period.
Barring any wild upsets, it looks like the Outback is much more likely.

As far as the Rose Bowl, the B1G is pretty clear that they will choose the highest-ranked available team based on the final CFP standings. So if Penn State is ranked above WI, Penn State will go to the Rose Bowl. Now, if WI gives OSU a really close game, does that jump them over PSU in the final ratings? that is one of the question marks. But if WI gets steamrolled by OSU, no way they jump PSU in the ratings.

Same. It's very annoying that two pretty equal B10/SEC matchups would be on at the same time.

As far as the Big Ten and ESPN are concerned, that’s a benefit. It wants fans of the conference’s teams, whether of the ones playing in those bowls or of other teams, in front of the TV in the early afternoon while the ESPN and ABC announcers repeatedly plug the Rose Bowl so the big late afternoon game has a captive audience of sorts. If one or both of the Citrus and Outback Bowls had Big XII vs. SEC or ACC vs. SEC, the Rose Bowl viewing audience would theoretically be smaller.

Now, the defenses for UGA, Florida and Auburn are another story. Offense is going to have a tough time no matter who we play. All are better than what we’ve seen this year. UGA may have the best defense in the nation and Florida and Auburn are not far behind.

UGA might be the best defense in the country but I don't know that "ALL" are better than what we have seen this year. Iowa was 6th in scoring defense, Penn State was 7th in scoring defense, and Wisconsin was 9th. Florida was 8th and Auburn was 16th. We've seen a few very good defenses this year. Now, all of the above are better defensively than us.

Here's what I'm seeing:

CollegeFootballNews: Citrus vs Auburn
CBS Sports: Outback vs Florida
ESPN (Bonagura): Outback vs. Tennessee
ESPN (Schlabach): Outback vs Tennessee
247Sports: Citrus vs. Auburn
SportingNews: Outback vs Auburn
USA Today: Outback vs Texas A&M

Of these, Tennessee is obviously the most win-able, but the least marquee. TAMU would be pretty even competition IMO. Florida or Auburn would be stiff competition.

big ten teams:
Ohio state beats Wisconsin > OSU cfp - Wisconsin 10-3
Wisconsin beats OSU > osu still goes to cfp, Wisconsin 11-2 rose bowl
penn state 10-2
minnesota 10-2
iowa 9-3
michigan 9-3
where do we drop in rankings? 12,14? Ahead of PSU?if Wisconsin loses big do they stay above us?(3 losses including ill. )
We have two losses two ranked teams
I had the same thought: would a three-loss Wisconsin team, clobbered in Indianapolis, be chosen ahead of us by bowl officials? And we beat Penn State. But if the Badger/Buckeye game is close, that's a different story.

I hope it's Tennessee, not Auburn!

Don’t understand the fear of playing an SEC team...I’d love to see MN against Florida or Auburn.

Certainly 'Bama and Arkansas were good opponents. Mizzou too but a different outcome.

BTW, wonder how Deltahog is doing these days?

The advantage we'd have against a team like Auburn or Bama is they'd have way more guys sit out than we would if we have any. Those teams had legitimate CFP and national title expectations and the Citrus or Outback would be a big letdown. For us, it still is a big game.

Have to think guys like Juedy, Ruggs and Smith at Bama and Derrick Brown at Auburn would sit if they miss out on a NY6.

Overall, we would likely be more motivated in general if we get a top team like that.

Me three! I'm disinclined to go to the bowl game if it's vs. 7-5 Tennessee. I'm sure it would be a close, tough game, but it just doesn't motivate me to spend a couple grand. I'd almost certainly make the trip for a game vs. Auburn or Florida...

I don't necessarily care who we play. I would love to see an 11th win and a top-25 ranking. The only way that at least one of these doesn't happen is if we play a non-ranked team and lose badly. So, I am hoping that we do not play an unranked team (Tennessee or Texas A&M).

I’d actually rather get the Rose Bowl next season, as it’ll be part of the CFP. That’d be two birds with one stone in my opinion. To get there next year it’d help if we can start the year in the preseason top-25. Once you end seasons ranked and start the next one ranked, that really seems to help carry teams that next step further year to year when it comes to improvements in recruiting and making a run at the top 10 by season’s end.
I think Outback would be a nice bowl for us this season. Anything lower seems kinda disrespectful.
Not sure I follow you here.
Does Citrus pick ahead of Outback? It used to be the other way around. If Citrus and Outback are the worst case.... ski U Mah PJ ...I like this discussion every December!
I believe it does pick before Outback.

That's lame though...i want to earn the rose bowl and we didn't

Think Winfield, Johson, Coughlin, or Martin sit the game out?
Kamal should sit out. He looked terrible yesterday post-injury. I am not a doctor, but I can’t believe they kept him out there. Very hobbled and couldn’t run. He needs to get healthy for the NFL workouts and Senior Bowl.

Rose Bowl would be cool.

Overall I want a name brand opponent. Win against them to solidify where we are at as a program.

If Wisky gets blown out you could honestly make the case for PSU, Wisky, or MN to go to the Rose Bowl. You could argue none of them earned it or all of them did, IMO...

I fully expect Wisc to jump PSU come Tuesday's CFP rankings. Losing the championship game to the #1 team for two of its three losses will not hurt Wisc in CFP. PSU was in Citrus last year so Gophs would be a default pick.

So, it’s clear that we need to hope for another 59-0 type result next week, as if we needed another reason.

I’d love to play Auburn or Alabama.
It would be a letdown for me to play TN.
I don’t think we are deserving of the Rose.

To be honest, they weren't really deserving of the Citrus when they went either, but it was nice to peel that New Year's Day Bowl monkey off the back.
