Minnesota State High School Basketball Tournament

You have to be pretty ignorant if you didn't see this coming with the type of athletes they had in school. This is about adults wanting to be guaranteed winners, not about education or the best possible student athlete experience.
Ya, but the problem was they were losing these kids for awhile heck they'd be even better if El Amin's kid hadn't bolted for Hopkins. When I said hang with 3A I meant that's where they belong, with teams like Delasalle, Austin, Red Wing etc. They're enrollment about 290 so a little under 300, better than it was five years ago, but they had over 1,000 kids in their school to when I was at Washburn Be interesting to see what they have coming up to replace their current crop in a couple of years.

The guy who coached Edgerton to that championship was my 8th grade Phy Ed teacher in Virginia, MN!

He went to Virginia the year after Edge won the title I believe. He was 24(?) years old.

Rich or Richie something?

I also think it is a disgrace to the state tournament that MPLS NORTH is playing in 1A basketball, BUT....anybody who knows anything about HS sports knows this is absolutely not the MSHSL fault. There is literally nothing they could've done to prevent this. The only way and best way to separate schools is by enrollment. MPLS North has low enrollment and a large number of kids on Free or Reduced lunches which drops them low enough to be single A.

The group that should be getting the heat is the AD and head coach of North. At anytime teams can opt to play up, they are just not allowed to play down. It was no surprise North was going to be dominate this year and years to come. Glad to see them moving up next year.

I do find it somewhat shocking that DLS does not get more heat. They are on pace to win their 5th straight class 3A state Championship. As a private school that is allowed to recruit and is known for their basketball dominance, I am shocked they have not declared to play in the top class. Anyone watching the game today saw the same stat I did. DLS in their last 10 state tourney games have won by an average of 15 points. The games are not even close.

Thats all

During the debate over district FB, I spoke to an official with the MSHSL. He said (not making this up) that the MSHSL does not consider "competitive balance" when assigning teams to sections and classes. They go entirely by enrollment and geography. So, if you wind up with horrendous mismatches, thank the MSHSL. it's a direct result of their policies.

I know that for section assignments, it's strictly dots on an outline map. Basketball isn't the only place you see this happening. Blackduck was in Section 7A in many things for several years, which makes sense if you look at a blank outline map. But it makes no sense when you look at a state highway map.

I live near DC, and the teams in the WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) would probably all be considered 3A teams in Minnesota. However, I don't think DLS could compete with DeMatha, Gonzaga, St. Johns, Paul VI and Good Council. These teams are usually Nationally ranked and play the Oak Hills of the nation. Here they aren't even allowed to compete in the state championships! They have to settle for winning the DC championship. Oddly enough, that was won by a public school this year for the first time in like 20 years.

Richie Olson, he taught Phy Ed and was the athletic director when I was in 8th grade. I remember him throwing a basketball at my head when I told him, "Lighten up Ritchie!" during class when some of the guys were screwing around. It really pissed him off when I caught it!

Here's an article on his 15 minutes.

Always fun to go back and read the story every few years.

I was in 5th grade that year.

Oh, and I watched Bill Davis play for the Gophers with Mel Northway, Hudson, Clark and Yates....64

Fergus Falls beats Red Wing 58-55 and will face DeLasalle in the AAA Championship. Real good tight game, Fergus lead for most of the game and really had an answer every time Red Wing made it a 1 possession game. Red Wing did hit a 3 that would have sent it to OT but it came about a half second after the buzzer went.

Perhaps that's because DC isn't a state

Red Wing, proving that defense wins championships.
Fergus Falls played great team defense while Red Wing looked defensively lazy.
How did the Hurt brothers get beat by Red Wing?

Someone in an earlier post said that Travis Toivonen was better than M Hurt ... Well he scored 13 pts in the loss to FF. Watching him he didn't seem to want to take any shots as the game came down to the end. Sure hope the posters basketball knowledge is wrong concerning M Hurt.

Anyone know of any online streams for the 4A semis tonight?

The Northfield coach (also BIG 9) said last weekend that Toivonen was the BIG 9 MVP and he referenced the RW vs. JM matchups when making that statement. I will just have to say that RW looked out of rhythm today, but I will compliment Fergus Falls for playing a dynamite game. Great coaching was evident and how about their 10th grade PG, Rund??? That young man made a name for himself on the big stage! Good luck to FF vs. DeLaSalle, looks like a very good matchup.

Yeah Rund (sp) is going to become a very solid player. By the time he's a senior, if he continues to improve, look out. Very nice player as a 10th grader.

Richie is courtside with Jarvis, Dorsey, and McBrayer and they're all laughs and hugs. Interpret that however you would like.

Glad to see that Pitino has the team in attendance. Has to help the image of the Gophers...at this point.

Reuvers can do a lot as a junior - let's see what Pitino does with him. If he goes after him that is.

Reuvers can catch the ball. Pitino doesn't recruit big men that can catch.
Reuvers can drive around players from the top of the key. Could you imagine Konate or Dedoiu doing that.
Reuvers can shoot. Pitino doesn't recruit shooters
Reuvers can rebound. Pitino did recruit Murphy so maybe he will consider Reuvers.

I agree. If he continues to improve, he could be a very nice get. He reminds me of a Badger post player, in that he can do a lot of things well.

Kevin Lynch doing one heck of a recruiting job tonight. He's already 1for 1 on Reuvers.

Three high major D1 players in this game and none of them can make a jump shot.
