Here is the release from the U:

Morris Dismissed from Men’s Basketball Program

The University of Minnesota men’s basketball program has dismissed senior Carlos Morris for conduct detrimental to the team, head coach Richard Pitino announced Wednesday.

Morris will remain on scholarship and have access to academic support services through the remainder of the school year.

The Gophers return to action on Thursday evening, hosting #6/5 Maryland at 7:00 p.m.

Go Gophers!!

Someone is very unhappy with his minutes.

no loss whatsoever. Probably wasn't in the best mood just sitting watching the young guys play. Best of luck to whatever he does in the future

Just the other day I was going to say that we've not had a disciplinary issue really since the McNeil deal...

We can all imagine what might have caused this, none of us know at this juncture, just hope that Pitino was in the right.

Addition by subtraction.

Hurts the depth a little bit, but his minutes were shrinking, so it's not a great loss to the team.

Still, when you're kicking seniors off the team at this time of the year, it doesn't look good for the program.

bottom line - pitino's future is riding on next year's FR and the transfers. If they don't come through, Pitino may be toast.

Not sure why people are acting like he was a cancer, we don't know that. Could have stayed on the team playing minutes when he was feeling it offensively or when a guard was in foul trouble. It would have been nice for him to finish his career and played on Senior night.

i'm guessing people are saying he's a cancer because, well, the coach determined his conduct was detrimental to the team which = a team cancer. not sure why people are acting like pitino doesn't know what he's doing in this scenario.

It's easy for any of us sitting in the stands or in front of the TV to call for the seniors to not play as it may be in the best interest of the program, but I've always felt badly for situations like Morris or Eliason last year. You only get one shot at this. It would be tough to watch your minutes go away in your last handful of college games. Maybe it was a different issue -- would be interesting to know.

Agreed; this is a bummer. Sorry it had to end this way. Hope he's not in any kind of legal trouble like McNeil.

I'm not any kind of reporter or detective - but I just did a quick search on the Hennepin County Website, and saw no arrests. I've never heard of Carlos getting into any legal troubles.

So his minutes go to Gilbert. Big deal. He wasn't going to be a solution for this team this year or in the coming years and if something has gone on where Coach P considers this necessary, then so be it. It is his team and he compiled the roster.

Didn't Morris have somebody close to him pass recently? Grief can make you do things you regret sometimes, who knows what actually happened, maybe he was complaining a lot of practice, maybe he was just indifferent as the season was moving forward will never know. You always want guys to have their moment on Senior day, it'll just be Joey King unless there's a senior walk on I don't know about. At least Pitino didn't pull his scholly

Martin joins the crew of early departures in Pitino's 2+ years (his recruits only):

- Daquein McNeil
- Josh Martin
- Zach Lofton
- Jonathan Nwankwo

My guess is that he was caught cat juggling, but not in Hennepin County.

I think he meant that people were acting like he was a cancer before this announcement.

Disappointed that I won't get to see him miss 5 floaters tomorrow night.

I didn't say he didn't know what he was doing. But people celebrating that Morris is gone and saying addition by subtraction has nothing to do with whether or not Pitino knows what he is doing or if his recent action has made him a cancer.

For everything everyone on this board knew up until today was that Morris was a supportive team member. His abilities were subject of much debate, but at a minimum he could have played minutes when we needed him and he could score.

Why all the vitriol against Carlos? He joined the program, gave what he had and, for whatever reason, it did not work out. He got lost in the youth movement, understandably. I do feel bad for seniors in this situation and wish they could have worked through it, but assume Pitino thought this through and made the right call. Regardless, good luck Carlos on your future endeavors…get that degree!

Since the moment he stepped on campus it's been all about Carlos Morris, team be damned. He was the worst possible upperclassman to have on a young team. A lazy player, with bad decision making, virtually uncoachable, with no inclination to play team ball, who thought he was a super star.

I don't know what caused this, but I assume that Carlos' attitude was not very team oriented based on the fact that he was a senior, not starting and not getting a lot of minutes. Since Coach P. has been here all the seniors have digressed their senior year with the possible exception of Mo. I hope that this sinking ship can get turned around next year. I never dreamt in my wildest dreams that this season would be so horrible. There is a coach at Texas Tech that is in his 3rd year doing pretty well against better competition in a better conference. Coaching is important. Our coach needs to relax and not micro manage the players so much.

- Nwanko got hosed by admissions and never played. Not sure it's fair to call him an early departure. Welcome to the U of M admissions Rick.

- Lofton was a low risk, throwaway schollie. Most people didn't expect it to work out, but since we had no one else using the schollie, why not take a shot. I don't fault Pitino for that one.

- McNeil had never been in any kind of trouble in his life & was always considered a really good kid. No way Pitino could have seen that coming.

- Martin though.....that one is squarely on Pitino. Granted some other really good programs were also interested in him, but that miss really hurt.

It's easy to say that Lofton was low risk and it may have been difficult to see McNeil's problem coming. Now add Morris, a non-starter whose career would've been over soon anyway. Taken individually, those losses don't seem too damning. But that's three guys kicked off the team in three years. When does that start to reflect on the coach?
