Lil Ricky Cannot Coach

Disagree. Freshman are freshman are freshman

Disagree on the can't coach part and yes he will get the opportunity next season. Coffey will be an improvement over Morris in pretty much all aspects, Lynch will at least be better on the defensive of end than Konate and I don't think there is any way he could have worse offensive game either. I like King and have thought he got a lot of flack that he didn't deserve in the past but he is really struggling right now as well and could be replaced by a more athletic Curry. Buggs playing time can be replaced by Fitzgerald or Hurt and I would think that would be an improvement on the defensive end and taking care of the ball at least. I see most of the guys coming in being upgrades in at least one area or another over the guys they will be replacing.

We need to have patience. We know that he can coach, based upon what he did his first year here. What he is lacking right now is talent. We just don't have enough quality players, especially in the front court. It's going to get better next year, the talent is coming.

We know that he can coach,

Please don't include me in that "we" you describe. I see little evidence that he is ready for this level of coaching demands.

The question is how much of that coaching fell on Dan McHale?

Hard to find a big time coach. I think he is worth giving more time. He's young, lets see where these guys are at the end of the season. I am betting they will improve

He seems in over his head to me. I can see them giving him another year, I wouldn't be heartbroken if they didn't though.

If you watched the huddles during games the last two years, it was McHale doing the talking at crunch time. Have people forgotten why Tubby was fired. The goal of a major college basketball program is being competitive in their conference and consistently in the NCAA, not playing in the NIT.

Just watched WVU destroy Coach McHales team earlier this week.

The honest question is to ask if Richard did well because of Tubby's recruits knowing how to play defense. Last year we saw a significant drop in defensive prowess and a drop in wins. This year, with recruits that Richard chose, we see an even more drastic fall off. Is there a trend?
I didn't mind Tubby being fired. There was a lot of issues there. But, I can't just give Richard a "get out of jail free" card. Richard needs to step up his coaching or he deserves to be fired.

I don't think anyone is. Most think that if we don't see good progress next season he should be gone.

I think our defensive issues are just as much personnel issues as it is scheme issues. Our two Seniors are just bad defenders overall. Joey isn't quite as bad as Morris, since be is actually in decent position most of the time. Joey just doesn't have the athleticism required to be a good defender. Morris is just terrible overall.

We have 5 newcomers next year, who are all going to help in that regard. Reggie is going to give us a rim protector we sorely need. Amir is a great defender and his length will help us out greatly at the 2. Curry is a athletic and versatile defender who can guard both on the interior and perimeter. I think Fitz ends up be the starter at the 3, he also brings good length and athleticism.
Not many teams are going to have the length and athleticism that we will have on the wings next year.

Completely agree that Richard Pitino is in over his head. Comparing 2014 to 2015 to 2016 as follows:

2014 2015 2016
PG Mason Mason Mason
SG Hollins McBryer Coffey?
SF Morris Morris Fitzgerald?
PF King King Buggs/Hurt/Curry
C Walker Konate Lynch

Comparing 2014 to 2016 team:

So, Jr Mason > Fr Mason
Hollins > Coffey (because he is a Fr)
Morris tie with Fitzgerald
Jr King > Buggs/Hurt/Curry
Walker > Lynch

2014 team did not make NIT. At best, Gophers will be NIT team in 2016. How is that improvement over Tubby???? At least the Tubby teams (while frustrating) was watch-able. I can barely stand to watch the Pitino teams. Teague screwed us over!

Those are a lot of pure guesses on your part. I think it is tough to know how this team will be next with 3/5 of the potential starting lineup is sitting out or in high school.

As someone pointed out, freshmen will be freshmen. So as good as Coffey/Hurt/Curry will be, they will still be freshmen. Murphy should be better .... but it is still difficult to see anything more than NIT next year. It will be 4 years into the program with Pitino by then, and we are talking NIT at best. Not good.

Pitino can coach just fine. He has made some really poor roster decisions.

Learning hard lessons on the job just might cost him his job.

You are spot on, Minny01. He is in only his second year with any of his recruits on board, and the talent IS coming. It is so easy to be impatient with all the five stars and one-and-dones and expectations of immediate success, etc. Give it time.

Murphy might be the best player we have and you don't seem to even include him in your analysis

Can we stop with the "we need to be patient" bullcrap?! As Gopher fans, we've been patient for years and years and years. Enough. All of you "let's be patient" folks need to step aside and let the adults take over.

Sidebar: I'm not sure who we could get as a coach seeing this program is lower than low so I don't see this program climbing out of the cellar any time soon. No, I don't think Richard is going to do the trick and not sure who could. I think it will take some 'unknown' hire who will come in and blow our socks off.

Even then, I hope the "unknown" hire has more than 1 year experience as a D1 head coach.......Pitino was a reach, and it's starting to look like MegaTongue over-reached. the Gophers needed a coach, and they hired a "name."

This is all opinion of course. And you left out Murphy which is odd considering he could be our best player next year. Have you seen Fitzgerland or Lynch play?
