Ha. Lou Nanne was on the Sports Show tonight and the subject came up. Lou vehemently said that had nothing to do with it. Said other big schools were playing in games there and Lou felt it would help in recruiting that area. Our backyard as he said.

Lou said it was completely his idea.

Did you ever hear the one about a GH poster making an assumption and it spread like wildfire?:)

Edit: And there will be a hockey game there next year also.

So whose idea was it that the Men's Hoops team posting embarrassing losses to USD & SDSU would help out the image of our Athletic Department & increase fundraising for the Athletic Village?

A search firm missing a filed gender discrimination lawsuit is about as miserable a failure as one can imagine.

Does it really matter whether the donation goes to football or basketball in terms of paying for the practice facilities? It is essentially one capital project.

BTW: I thought this was an AD thread.

I'm sure there are donors who prefer to support the basketball program, and donors who prefer to support the FB program. But, your point is well-taken. If the report is accurate, that's another $9 or $10 toward the overall goal.

BTW - has anyone seen or heard any updates on fundraising lately? I can't remember anything recently. I assume there are still fund-raising efforts ongoing. It would be interesting to know just exactly how much more they need to raise to meet the goal.

Thinking/wondering the same. I assume there will be an update when this new donation is announced.
 

A lot of donations will be timed to fall into this tax year so I wouldn't expect an update until after the first.

Maybe they're getting naming rights for something in the basketball center. But yeah I'm guessing the money all goes into one pool...

What does does soliciting for donation for athletics and the Melanesian Cargo Cults have in common?

They both required charismatic leaders adept at enticing - mana from heaven from the ancestors in the case of the Melanesians or donors for ADs.

The most famous of these cults came out of WWII in the islands of Vanatu. The Johnny Frum and Tom Navy Societies. They want to appease their ancestors to cause the outsiders to drop cargo from the air or from ships full of Spam and other goodies and durable goods.

Just to make sure they are noticed they mimic what they see. The men painted "USA" on their chest and march in unison and created mimics of airplanes out of pandanus or coconut tree leaves.

I can imagine us mimicking alien space crafts like these tribes do.

The most important job of AD should have all the good qualities of a good cargo cult leader.

Woody Kon Tike Mega Tongue will fail miserably as a Cargo Cult leader too as they stand on high moral grounds. The only useful purpose for Woody for the tribe is that he'll make a good Tiki model with his long tongue.
