Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Well I mean technically Eastern Michigan is an FBS offer. Perhaps it is because he committed in July and has been so solid he has entertained other offers.

Right, my mistake. I was typing too quickly and I meant to say Power 5. Thanks for catching that.

How can we be his only FBS offer, especially if he's such a physical specimen?

(1) Even in the "camp era," I think Minnesota remains somewhat of a backwater when it comes to D-1 recruiting. That is changing somewhat and I think our suburban conferences are starting to stack up well against the competition in other states, but we're never going to have the numbers that they have in some of the football hotbeds.
(2) I think Bob is right in his assessment that once a player commits and gives an indication that his commitment is solid to recruiters from other schools, the offers simply don't come.

I'm happy Martin is on board.

per Joe:

According to sources, the Gophers would welcome Green as part of their 2016 recruiting class, but they also don’t want him to think his decision will make or break them.

That hasn’t stopped other members of their recruiting class — namely Eden Prairie linebacker Carter Coughlin and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., defensive back Elijah Daniels — from tweeting their excitement about Green potentially playing for the Gophers.

Green and his father, Bryan, who played running back for the Gophers in the early 1990s, have not commented publicly and did not respond to messages from the Star Tribune.

The 6-4, 225-pound Green is scheduled to graduate from high school this month, which will set him up to enroll in college in January and participate in spring practice.

Last week, the Gophers parted ways with Tony Poljan, a quarterback commit from Lansing, Mich. Green would be a notable replacement. His star isn’t shining quite as bright as it was before he left for Texas, but the Gophers still would love to see him come home.

Go Gophers!!

I really think this kid is going to be a special player at the U. I've seen him play twice and he is just a terrific HS football player. It's difficult to evaluate someone like him because he is so advanced physically. He almost has the size to NFL LBer today.

What position is Kamal projected to be in college?

For those not inclined to look, it's Otumos Payemanu, a WR from East Ridge with a Marcus Jones size profile. He lists an offer from Navy.

Obviously the education would be great, but I can't think of a worse position to play at Navy (or any of the military schools) than wide receiver.

Most PWO have offers from FCS or DII pretty good get IMO. Navy is always a solid program.

No consideration for TE. Could be the next Maxx Williams
I hope not. I saw him play once this year. I agree with BL as I was envisioning defensive end.
I also hope the Gophers have another look at the defensive tackle from Prior Lake.

TE wouldn't shock me either, but he really is an impressive player on defense. He's quick and physical and he just reminds me of a DE.

Given how athletic his film looks, I was really surprised at his size, he is a big kid.

I look at this picture and it just screams linebacker to me

I see this picture and it screams fill that hole and smack that Badger tailback for no gain. I see Carter Coughlin on the outside and Martin in the middle with Barber playing strong side and I can't help but think this defense has a bright future. Potential is in this group of three to have an All Big 10 type linebacking corps, with Minnesota guy's who would think that possible?

At that size and frame if he can run, which looks like he can and has a little bit of quickness Martin could be a pretty fantastic linebacker in this defense. I think his football instincts and ability to read a play would play well at the middle linebacker spot.
Hopefully he ends up playing for coach Sherels, which it sounds like he will because I think this kid has the physical traits of a college linebacker. If he can play with the mindset that Sherels had with better wheels we could be sitting on a real underrated player.
He reminds me a lot of Poock and I really liked Poock's film.

Martin, this dude just looks like a football player that has a little something extra. Wonder if he has the mindset to play the mike instead of outside, played QB in high school so he may have some of those leadership intangibles you look for in a middle linebacker.

We're up to 11 official visitors for this weekend: http://minnesota.247sports.com/Season/2016-Football/Visits

Watts, Winfield Jr., and Cushenberry are the non-committed visitors. Sounds like we will also have a few JUCO DBs here: Elijah Battle and Kris Weatherspoon.

Looks like along with the 2 JUCO DBs 24/7 is missing Georgia DE Taiyon Devers who will visit this weekend.

Barber would play in the middle with Martin at OLB.

Agreed, OLB Coughlin 6'4 212- ILB Barber 6'1 225- OLB Martin 6'3 205

all are pretty quick, fast and strong

The Martin info is old - he's more like 230-235 now. The only issue I see is that Barber and Martin are both built like MLBs.

That settles it then. Switching to a 3-4 defense to get them both in the middle. :D

It's an interesting thought, one I've wondered if they have considered before based influx of LBs and seemingly underwhelming D-line commits. I'm afraid Richardson would be too small to play NT in a 3-4 though.

I've also wondered if Coughlin could eventually end up at DE. I know he's athletic enough to play OLB or even S, but he is 6'4" which is more than tall enough to play DE in college and in the pros. It just depends on how much he fills out.

...

I also hope the Gophers have another look at the defensive tackle from Prior Lake.

Why did the Gophers not offer Jamahl Johnson? Was it his height or other issues?

If the Gophers extend an offer now, will he de-commit?

Anyone know who this is?
