The Gophers’ most impressive commitment from a busy Sunday, might’ve been the last one. Top Iowa tight end Jacob Simpson committed to Minnesota after his official visit last weekend. Listed at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds he holds other top offers from Missouri, Texas Tech and Louisville. 247sports ranks him as the 6th-best player in the state of Iowa.

Who is Jacob Simpson?:

Jacob Simpson is a 3-sport student-athlete at Johnston High School. Johnston, Iowa has a population of just over 20,000 in the metro area of Des Moines. Starring in basketball and baseball off the gridiron, Simpson is an all-around athlete. His first offer came from Texas Tech on Oct. 11 in the middle of his football season, then nine more followed. The Gophers offered on June 7, then he committed only a few days later after his first official visit over the weekend at the annual Summer Splash event.

  • Scouting Report:

Listed at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, Simpson lined up a lot on the outside last season as a junior. His physical profile and skills remind me a lot of Brevyn Spann-Ford at the same age. He has impressive route running for someone his size and age. 247sports ranks him as the 584th-best player in the country and it’s rightfully so. Simpson has the chance to be one of the best players in this class for the Gophers.

Instant Reaction:

Coach Fleck and his staff went into Iowa and got their second-ranked un-committed player in the class. Simpson is now the first player in the top 10 committed to a school not named Iowa or Iowa State. This should be viewed as an impressive recruiting win for the Gophers. Simpson joins (Illinois) Julian Johnson as the second tight end in the Gophers class, both with very intriguing long-term ceilings. Simpson is now the Gophers’ third-highest-ranked recruit in the 2024 class. He is a big-time talent that has a chance to be the team’s long-term future at the position.

What is next?:

With all four commitments Sunday, the Gophers’ 2024 class now has 19 commitments, ranking 12th best in the entire country. The first weekend of Summer Splash was a success for the program and they have plenty of momentum on the recruiting trail. With 21 total commitments last cycle, the Gophers are far from done and could have some more news as soon as this weekend as Summer Splash continues.
