Today was a big-time Saturday for the Gophers’ recruiting train. 2024 Prior Lake defensive lineman Jide Abasiri officially committed to his hometown school Minnesota, joining talented Candian WR Dallas Sims from earlier in the day. Listed at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds Abasiri is the No. 4 ranked player in Minnesota according to 247sports. He held top offers from Washington, Missouri and Kansas State among others.

Who is Jide Abasiri?:

Jide Abasiri is one of the best athletes in the state of Minnesota. When he is not dominating on the gridiron for Prior Lake, he is a terrific wrestler. He is now next in line for the Prior Lake to Gophers pipeline. The offers came flowing in when he broke onto the scene as a junior last season. On Jan. 16 Minnesota joined Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State then Missouri, Washington, Ohio, and Central Michigan followed. 247sports ranks Abasiri as the 4th-best player in the state and 648th-best in the country.

  • Scouting Report:

Listed at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds Abasiri has the ideal physical profile for a Big Ten defensive lineman. He has tremendous strength for someone his age, which consistently shows up on film. He is still a bit raw when it comes to pure pass-rush skills, but his potential is through the roof. He has everything you’d want from a defensive line prospect, and has the potential to be a serious contributor at the next level.

Instant Reaction:

New defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere has officially landed his first commitment, and it’s a big one. Jide Abasiri joins Greg Johnson and Martin Owusu as Prior Lake standouts to commit to the Gophers. Abasiri has a lot of similarities to Martin Owusu who both have tremendous potential to develop under DeLattiboudere. Absiri now becomes the third in-state player to stay home in 2024. 247sports ranks him as the 4th-best player in the state, but I think there can be a pretty realistic argument that he could be No. 1.

What is next?:

With three commitments in less than four days, the Gophers’ 2024 recruiting class is red hot. When it comes to Minnesota prospects, DE Wyatt Gilmore (Rogers, MN) will now become the Gophers’ top target in-state. With Abasiri, Seidl and Carrier committed Fleck continues to show that Minnesotan kids want to play for the Gophers. Abasiri joins a growing list of really athletic and intriguing prospects committed to the 2024 class.
