The Gophers’ annual “Summer Splash” recruiting event kicked off this weekend, with dozens of prospective recruits taking official visits. Sunday morning, Samuel Madu was the first of four to commit the Maroon & Gold. Minnesota was the 6-foot-1 cornerback’s first official visit and he had a Top 5 list of Michigan State, Penn State, West Virginia and Purdue. He will now come to Dinkytown with plenty of length and potential.

Who is Samuel Madu?:

Samuel Madu is a talented senior cornerback from White Plains, N.Y., which is a suburb of New York City and the 11th biggest city in the state with a population of just under 60,000. Attending an all-boys private school Archbishop Stepinac, Madu broke onto the recruiting scene following his junior season. His first DI offer was from the Gophers on Jan. 24 and then 13 more came in, headlined by Missouri, Vanderbilt and Penn State. The Gophers are his first of four scheduled visits for the summer, but he liked his time in Dinkytown so much that he committed over the weekend.

    • Scouting Report:

Listed at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Madu has the ideal size for a Big Ten cornerback. He also is a terrific athlete, being logged at 22.7′ in the long jump, which ranks top 10 in the state of New York. Watching his highlights, his potential quickly jumps off the screen, and his impressive length helps him stick to receivers like glue. His great instincts and feel for the game makes him a playmaker in every sense of the term. He will be a fun long-term prospect for new CB coach Nick Monroe.

Instant Reaction:

With Justin Walley and Terell Smith, CB is a position that P.J. Fleck has found some success recruiting at the high school level. Samuel Madu has the talent and potential to be next in line in that conversation. With 10 other power five offers and two from the SEC, he was a highly touted recruit nationwide. 247sports currently does not have him ranked in its database, but that should change shortly and he could end up being one of the more highly-ranked recruits in the Gophers’ class. Madu adds to an impressive group of secondary players in the 2024 class for Minnesota.

What is next?:

With all four commitments Sunday, the Gophers’ 2024 class now has 19 commitments, ranking 12th best in the entire country. The first weekend of Summer Splash was a success for the program and they have plenty of momentum on the recruiting trail.
