Zebrowski details conversation with Claeys when he got fired

I think the fact the Claeys was decisive and made the decision that he feels is best for the program shows that he is not in over his head at all. He witnessed deficiencies in the offense from inside the program and took action.

Claeys learned it from the best.

Bottom line is if Coach Z was getting the job done he'd be here. If he wants to prove he was capable he has every opportunity in the world to do so. At any job you either make yourself indispensable or you risk being let go, especially a coaching job after a coaching change. Sounds like complacency may have set in a bit with him

Yep. And if he was a good passing game coordinator and QB coach, he'd probably have another D1 job. I don't care much for all the sour grapes when someone gets let go. I'm manage a bank and have had to let people go. Do your job and you get to stick around. Don't do your job, and well, let's just say you find someone better.

This is so logical. However, admitting it is right is admitting Kill failed to recognize it. Shots at Kill are not received well in the GH.

Maybe, just maybe, having one play caller would have saved fourteen of the nineteen seconds that were wasted on the Michigan two-yard line. It would have been nice to be the team that holds the Little Brown Jug in their trophy case for the next five years and not have to play Michigan once to keep it.

Claeys handled the firing like a jerk. After all of the years Zebrowski had with Kill and Claeys he deserved more of an explanation than a quick, "just want to go in a different direction". You are all giving Kill a pass on the poor performance of the offense. There is very little doubt that Kill was heavily involved with offensive personnel decisions, putting together the game plans, and play calling during the game. Limegrover and Zebrowski had nowhere near the freedom to do their jobs that Kill gave to Claeys.

You have only heard one side of the story.

Claeys took over a team in the middle of the season and made the best of it. As soon as the season was over he started to make changes that he thought were in the best interest of the team. I am sorry a couple of coaches were let go, it is part of the profession. I have been fired twice in my life and I have fired 50 or so in my life, neither side of the desk is easy and there is no perfect way to do it. By letting theses coaches go right after yearly awards sends a message to the staff and the kids, mediocrity will not make it at Minnesota, Claeys won't settle for it. I hope the kids talked about it among themselves and quickly realized they need to step it up or their playing time will be in jeopardy. Let's move forward and start to focussing on making this team better. Go Gophers!

Why is it that oftentimes the coach being fired is the only one "shocked?" I don't think any fans were shocked at all that Claeys parted with Limegrover and Zebrowski. It was a rational decision and the writing was on the wall.

Same with Tubby. Yes, it sucks to be let go, but don't these people have any self-awareness?

What does Tubby have to do with this? Tubby and f'in Jim Zebrowski are on such opposite ends of the spectrum that it's hilarious you even put them in the same post.

We play Michigan in 2017. I'm shocked you didn't know that, you being such a big Gopher fan and all.

Sorry, but my research the day after the game showed at least a three year gap between the next time we played Michigan. I guess you ate smarter than all the GHers, put together.

You know the point was about coaches and their lack of self awareness. It's a solid point. Don't start pretending that he's comparing the two of them in any measure outside of the Platonic ideal of a high level coach. Your baiting sucks.

Like a jerk? Firing, or letting people go, is never pleasant. A manager doesn't fire the employee. The employee fires themselves by not preforming or doing something unethical. That's life, especially in Coaching in FBS College Football. Put your big boy pants on and get used to it.

He probably eats smarter than I do, but I'm working on that. I can't speak for everyone else.

Yeah you don't go into CFB football expecting to be coddled. You either get a better job or get fired in a few years.

Oh, I got the point just fine. And it sucks. Zebrowski was a never-was position coach working under a new boss. Tubby is a national championship-winning future HOF head coach who had the most successful season of any Gopher men's basketball coach in 23 years. And for some reason, he should've expected to be fired? Yeah, ok - makes total sense.

The guy had 20 years to establish that what he did to improve the things under his control was so valuable that he was indispensible. Falling back on the fact that he was performing OK, and "why me?" reeks of a mediocre mindset. People get let go from jobs for average and even good performance all the time. When change occurs and you haven't established yourself as a necessary part of the solution, don't be surprised to get lumped in as part of the problem.

“The best title I could have is offensive line coach; that’s what I was put on this Earth to do. So I’m in such a good place right now, both physically and mentally.”

“With Tracy making the decision, I understood because I felt I wasn’t giving what each side needed to have, as far as being a coordinator and being an offensive line coach,” Limegrover said. “I felt that way.”

Well done, Coach Claeys

Whatever happens down the road it was nice to see Claeys willing to pull the trigger quickly and make the call. It has to be his team the best he can make it if we're to find out what he can do.

The old, "I have no idea why I was fired," one-sided media story.

They both got fired and were both surprised about it. Although in fairness to Tubby I think he saw it on ESPN before his meeting with Teague, so I could see him having beef about how it was hand

Yep. It is Claeys head on the chopping block as the HC, so I can't fault him for cutting ties with someone who clearly hasn't been a great QB coach/passing game coordinator. If anything, Z was average to below average as Leidner appears to be the only QB to really improve at all under his tenure as far as starting QB's that Coach Z has coached. And, some of that, per MV and others, was credited to two Grad Assistants being in charge of the passing game towards the second half of last season. That sort of helped sign his dismissal for him.

This is where Tray Claeys different direction comes from. TC doesn't believe that you can be both an OC and OL Coach at the same time. He believes that OC/QB Coach is a better combination. Z was the odd man out when TC decided to make changes he thought were necessary. From a leadership perspective, you couldn't just demote Limegrover to OL Coach, even if that had been done, Z still would have been the odd man out.

Right. The difference is that Zebrowski shouldn't have been surprised, while Tubby should've been.

The lengths to which people (not you) will go to inject their Tubby hatred into totally unrelated subjects is bizarre.

While I agree with you in general, I don't think that is the situation here. Maybe my memory is bad, but It think there were plenty of rumors floating around (in the media, message boards) of Tubby possibly being let go. I don't remember being that surprised when it happened.

True. With respect to being fired, ironically, the only surprise is that they were surprised. Leave it to the GH village idiot [not you] to protest, though (as soon as he was done yelling at those kids to get off his lawn). Lmao

Don't get me wrong, a firing is sad for the people involved, but it gets tiresome hearing high profile, under performing coaches express shock at being fired when everybody half paying attention knew it probably was coming. The more they express shock, the more oblivious it tends to make them look.
