Venables is *expected* to restore the dominance of the OU defense and return the program to national contention. I’d argue they’re one of the teams with the highest expectations in the country. Too bad they’re going to the SEC soon.

Also their donors and NIL are using the university like a bank so I’m sure that helps too

Based on last year, they have a long way to go. I forgot the move to the SEC. I got a feeling it will be like Nebraska in the big 10.
 


Wish him the best. Hoped he would have stayed home, but I can't fault a kid when he's making a decision of this magnitude.

I do not think they’ll do as well as Nebraska did in their first 6 years in the big ten. Nebraska won 9 games in 5 of their first 6 years in the conference.
 

Always tough trying to get the top-rated kid. Lots of pressure to perform at home. Going to Oklahoma is interesting to me. They have a defensive minded HC, but how will it go with the transition to the SEC? I would see Venables on the hot seat and fired before Fleck would get be in trouble here at MN. Minnesota has a pretty strong defensive program as well.

If Oklahoma goes 6-7 again this year Venables probably ends up on the hot seat entering 2024 SEC entry

I hope not. I just think it sets a bad precedent, letting the top players get the impression that MN is a fall-back option. There's almost no reason to stay home if you know that, right? Go to helmet school, get NIL, compete with the best, and if it doesn't work out, come back to where you would have been anyway?

The only exception I would make would be if there was a bad scheme fit and then we changed coordinators and that made it a match.

Beating a dead horse, but the top player in most states goes to another state for school for a multitude of reasons.

2020: MN (69) OU (28) CLEM (18)
2019: MN (37) OU (64) CLEM (3)

2022 saw both Clemson and OU regress. OU and Clemson both brought in top 15 classes each year. Venables is a great defensive mind but can he right the ship as they sail into the SEC conference? That’s a big ask.
 

It's a bummer, but yep I'm one of those "he's dead to me types." Have to keep the eyes on the road ahead and focus on the players that want to be here.
Obligatory comment about how I can't fault a kid for leaving Minnesota....(but I DO fault them...muhahahaha)

There is some merit to this. We come across as Minnesota Nice giving someone a scholarship to come here after things didn't work out for whatever reason. Perhaps we should be firmer and let them transfer someplace else.

I'm not sure why you quoted my post when you wrote this? I'm not at all focused on why he left, I'm focused on the idea that we shouldn't be a fall-back option for him.

Yes. Being a fall-back option might help in the short-term (aka maybe Wyatt comes back a year from now) but it would hurt long-term because then all future top recruits will think they can just come back here whenever.

I think it's better if the top recruits each year realize that if they leave MN for a helmet school, if it doesn't work out they may end up in the G5 somewhere.
 

If he’s good he’s welcome back. If he can’t hack it for OU, why would we think he’d make an impact here? It’s not like they’re cranking out multiple DEs to the nfl every year.
