Woodson out for the season

It was officially announced this AM that Taylor Woodson is out for the season following her injury in the Manhattan game.

Thoughts and prayers to Taylor!
Damm! Was afraid of that when we saw it happen. Can't imagine how frustrating and disappointing that must be for her. I guess all you can do now is get it repaired, rehab and then decide if you want to continue to try and play hoops next year or after, or finish up your degree and move on to your "after hoops" career now. Either way, I hope to hear sometime in the future that she's happy and doing well.

Thoughts and Prayers to Taylor! Feel so bad for her and wonder if she will be able to come back from this to play. Two different legs and two braces won't be easy to play with I am sure.

Not sure how we can break this curse but it has really been devastating to the program:
Klick/Holloway
Braun
Braun/Woodson
Woodson

Oof I watched that game last night, woke up sick to my stomach. I feel just terrible for her.

Many Drs are going away from leg braces after an ACL tear. I’ve actually been surprised to see all the gophers still wearing them.

Really feel for Woodson. Moving forward this year, the addition of Brylee Glenn looms large for the season. Glenn is not an exact positional replacement for either Heyer or Woodson, but her court time should nonetheless be materially increased due to the absences of Heyer and Woodson.

Yeah Glenn, Christian, and Tonga will see increased minutes. Holloway seems to be moving better too, hopefully she can make a jump this year too. Stil wonder about the other Breshers sisters who has missed last two games with a minor injury. Does she have anything to offer this year?

Just pray we stay healthy the rest of the year..... still think we have enough to get to the tourney, but we can't afford anymore blows like this.

I did notice that Holloway doesn't have hers anymore. Surpriosed to see Klick still wearing one after two years.

I see Tonga playing the 5 spot for Hart(like she has been) . I see Christian getting Woodson’s minutes. The year of 4 guards….good thing all the guards are around 6 feet. I see Holloway as an as needed position.

Where does Klick stand. It sounds like before her injury she was going to be in the rotation. Any chance she will get a shot now?

Agree with your comments. So far Glenn appears to have more versatility and scoring potential than previous portal guards.

Last year, the injury to Braun forced McKinney into the starting lineup... she was a very pleasant surprise. Not unlike McKinney, Christian will have a quick and steep learning curve... I believe she up for it... like what I have seen so far. I believe she can help fill the gaps left by Heyer and Woodson, but with more scoring potential.

Holloway will continue to contribute in somewhat of a known way, but I don't see any great breakthroughs.

I believe Klick has increasing up side potential.

The large unknowns for me are Zoey & Tonga.

Bottom line is... I think we still have a team that will meet or exceed expectations.

Go Gophers!!

Klick has got to get stronger. She is also pretty slow (guessing that big brace does not help)

Having torn an ACL myself, leg braces are a psychological reinforcement as much as anything physical. Once rehab is complete and full strength is returned, the fear of re-injury is a very real obstacle to overcome. Especially for me, I had never had a significant injury before tearing mine - not even a broken bone. The ordeal was traumatic. Learning to trust that joint again takes some time. I wore a brace for a few years, and that was just playing intramurals. I still have some lingering emotional trauma, and it was over 30 years ago now. I wasn't even close to playing at her level, so I feel for her.

Another tough injury for Woodson. Sending healing vibes to her. Luckily the team is deeper but it would be nice if we can stay healthy the remainder of the season.

I think Glenn did better in the second game, but in both games, I noticed that she has a tendency to drive into triple coverage. She needs to look out and find the open person just a little bit more. Hopefully that will come, because she does appear to be a good shooter and good on defense.

I would love to see the stats on knee injuries, but all of these girls are native Minnesotans. Is something happening (or not happening) in high school level basketball/AAU here that isn't preparing these players, physically, for college-level ball? Or is this just a coincidental bad run of luck?

I do remember being at some high school games in the last few years where teams had 5 players or more sitting on the bench in braces. It's concerning.

I don't think it's about preparation. Across all of women's sports, there's just an increase in ACL injuries recently, and there's some new research being done as to why this type of injury is more common in women than men.

Also, I'm trying to be generous to the Manhattan player who injured Taylor, but the foul that happened on that play was a total frustration foul. Totally preventable. She got her pocket picked and she got careless trying to defend Taylor at the rim. Mistakes happen, but watching that in the Barn, I was not happy at how hard she let herself fall onto Taylor. I don't even remember which player it was, and I'm not going to bring out the pitchforks against her, but good, responsible players know how to defend without putting someone else's health on the line and that's not what happened Friday night.

Hate to tell you, but her knee blew out right before there was really any contact from the defender. You could see her right leg collapse a little as soon as she planted it. I stopped the video at the exact moment it gave way and if there was any defensive contact at all at that point, it was very incidental and certainly not an intentional, frustration foul. I guarantee that coach Dawn P, or anybody else on the sideline are not thinking that the defender caused that unfortunate injury.

I don't have any stats, but in dealing with a couple of ACL's myself and watching countless games from the sidelines, I would say that a high percentage of ACL injuries are basically a severe hyperextension where there was no actual contact with another player.

I agree. Mine was no contact. It’s more common in women. I coach basketball and our worst season we had 3. The Gopher vb team has been greatly affected by knees. The head coaches daughter tore hers three times before medically retiring in college. At that time in 2014 the push was big on knee braces. I have noticed that Fudd and PB don’t wear one. The last couple of local kids have not worn one. I agree it is a mental support just as much as a physical support. I don’t think there is a correct answer I was actually just discussing all of this before Woodsons injury.

I'm not going to argue a lot given the gravity of the situation, but a couple minutes after the play, I saw Dawn go to one of the referees and argue the foul (because a foul was indeed called!) should have been upgraded. I also heard Manhattan's coach reassure her bench, "This is okay. She didn't mean to hurt her. No one means to hurt anyone when they foul." So it appeared to me that in fact both head coaches were thinking it.

Had both coaches seen the slowed down replay? Both coaches probably reacting to what they thought they saw.. IMO

Absolutely, 100%. Bet if you asked them tonight, they would say that after reviewing the tape, it was not a result of contact by the other player.

I have not watched the replay of that play, but watching it live in the barn, a few fans around us were complaining. My husband and I both agreed that it was not a dirty play - frustration yes, but dirty, no. Just somebody who got her pocket picked and was trying not to let the Gophers get an easy basket. She didn’t go into her any harder or whatever, than any other normal shooting foul that happens throughout a game.
