Winning Ugly and Random Thoughts That Worry Me

Somebody is REALLY straining for reasons to be wringing his hands.

Also, Texas is *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing terrible.

This has got to be one of the worst post game synopses I have ever read. We certainly didn't play a great game (and probably one of our worst) but that's going to happen from time to time, especially after such a long layover. I would much rather have a game like this now and win by 25 then have it later in the season and lose. How can you possibly be this negative about a 25 point win in which the second half was played almost exclusively by reserves? Also, your view on Texas is laughable, they lost to Chaminade and USC for crying out loud. I would say that Michigan State's close game with them was more of a negative sign for them than a positive one. I'm still fairly apprehensive about the game vs. the Spartans, but more so because we seem to always struggle against them and Izzo is one heck of a coach. You may be right that this team is overrated and will struggle during the conference schedule (although I think we will do quite well and finish in 3rd-5th place) but to come to that conclusion based solely on this game is inappropriate.

[/thread].

I think we need to back off Moses a little. He has every right to express his thoughts about how the Gophers played without people getting all over him. Though i don't agree with everything he posted, i do think Minnesota is going to need to play exponentially better to defeat Michigan State.

I am sure the sharps in Vegas will have the gophs Favored. Winning ugly is great compared to losing pretty.

I firmly believe that we have every right to call him an absolute idiot for the thoughts that he expresses.

This entire thread is a joke. Everybody has to like our chances against MSU, what else can you ask for?

If you can't get excited about the signs of promise that this team has shown thus far, then you will never have an opportunity to ENJOY Gopher basketball... ever. I'm sorry, but it doesn't get much better than this for this program.

Moses you do realize Lafayette would have lost to a number of NSIC teams? Tubby tinkered with different combos and different players. Look at the box, many bench players had more minutes than starters. Austin is not hurt to the extent he can't play and he played limited minutes. This team will be fine come B1G season. They got a lot of kids involved, look good at times and very sloppy at other times. Just like a team who knew they could win this no matter who they put out there. With your "doom and gloom" analysis, I offer you a suggestion. Don't watch or attend any games. Not good for your psyche.

Your screwed now Moses...morongoopher is defending you. The biggest dipsh_it on the board is coming to your aid...next you'll have wren singing your praises. Your post was reactionary dribble and doesn't deserve this much debate. Crawl back in your hole and don't come back until we actually lose a game...not win by 25 with our reserves playing 25 plus minutes you putz.

Do you think I care who likes me or lavishes praise upon my posts? I'm expressing my concerns with what I saw....We have tons of work to do and I'm afraid we won't beat many of the upper half (MSU, Mich, IU, OSU) teams if Tubby doesn't address those things I mentioned...The biggest problem is that we're not getting easy shots from the half court offense.

It would have been nice if you had finished this commentary by saying..."Yours truly, the GH Gestapo."

I agree with Moses. It looked messy. That kind of play will not have us beating MSU. I would have felt more confident had the starters logged more minutes. It is too much downtime for them.

I think Moses is getting too much flak. I mean, Kendall Shell and Chris Halverson were not dominating down the stretch, and I think Michigan State's front line will have a very real chance to expose them. Let's be honest, in the last two minutes of the game, the Gopher offense was really struggling to execute. A bit off topic, but I also think that Toby Gerhart's last few runs today demonstrate that the Vikings' run defense has no chance against the Packers next week, and Alexey Shved's failure to even get a SHOT off at the end of the Wolves Thunder game pretty much puts paid to the Wolves' playoff chances.

I only have about 3 people on my ignore list...but I can see it was used well in this case.

I'm not getting caught up in the thinking that the 12-1 hoopla assures the Gophers of making a mark in the BIG. Sure the Gophers "could" end up with a good season. To date, they haven't played anyone deserving of a ranking other than losing by 18 to Duke.

Trevor will hand his hands full defending the paint and the boards against MSU and will be lucky to get help from EE and Mo. MSU has a history of playing tough D.

Why are some people like Gopher in Philly so afraid of some objective critiques? Why do you resort to personal attacks?

To ignore the poor offensive flow and shooting is like the Iraqi Information Minister ignoring our tanks arriving in Baghdad in March of 2003. Or the Russians denying their Kursk submarine had a problem back in 2000.

To bury your head in the sand and ignore problems I listed don't make them go away. Tubby and the Gophers need to work their butts off over the next 8 days...I hope their not basking in the national attention and top 10 ranking that will come out tomorrow. This team has unlimited potential, but the offense needs Andre to get more dribble penetration, either from Andre or Joe Coleman. I'm concerned that Coleman isn't skillful enough to beat quality defenders off the dribble. Most of it will fall on Andre and he's going to have to step up his game.

First of all, comparing a game to a war is unreal.

Look Moses, you expect perfection from every player, every possession, every game. Please keep your expectations human.

Basketball is a game of momentum, which swings back and forth in the course of every game. Let the games of the past be put behind us, and let's look forward to the games that are to come, without worrying. Let the games begin, and let the games play out.

GO GOPHERS!!!

I'm just glad someone was brave enough to equate the mistakes of the Gophers' second-string players to wartime operations. I commend his dedication to rationality.

Don't be rediculous!

I'm not comparing the games or players or any combination of those things with war...I'm comparing the reflex rejection by posters on this site of the same level of denial that we saw by those govt spokes people. There's nothing wrong with pointing out some areas of concern and things we need to work on. If you don't like to read about concerns and areas we need to improve, then "ignore" my posts.

Moses, very few on GH will say that we are without warts. Of course we have issues just like every other team, and last night a few were exposed. I also wish we were going into the Michigan State game with another challenging game or at least one that had our core group in a better rhythm. I think the reaction is this thread is the way your post came off is as if we just got drilled by 15 at home to a MAC team. No doubt that if we play exactly as we did last night against Michigan State we probably won't win. But each game is a storyline in of itself and we have the pieces to beat a Michigan State at home this year, now its time to prove it.

Nail on the head, thanks for the rationality. I agree: if we play against MSU like we played against Lafayette, we stand a good chance of losing. Just like if MSU plays against us like they did against a bad Texas team, they stand a good chance of losing. They had 5 players score yesterday. Do you think they'll beat the Gophers' depth with that kind of performance? It's not like we're the only ones who should feel the need to improve on a daily basis.

It's not like we're going to be going against our opponent's "A game" night after night. Similarly, we're not going to be getting our squad's "A game" night after night.

Why do people insist on calling Texas "bad"? Clearly, they had a rough start to the season but they blew the doors out of a team with 4 McDonald's All-Americans and yes, UNC isn't stellar this year, but Texas is talented and pushed MSU to play at a high level. Don't ever try to equate Lafayette with Texas! That's rediculous! Texas will probably wind up in the NCAA Tourney and could win a game or 2. Lafayette will be lucky to win 10 games.

Oh bother, when did I do that?

I call Texas bad because they lost to a bad USC team. I call Texas bad because they lost to a bad Chaminade team. I call Texas bad because they are not good.

Strange, eh?

The starters weren't going to get many minutes, they knew it & they didn't get up for this meaningless game. Doesn't concern me in the least because our second stringers were up for the game & beat Lafayette by 25. I guess I don't understand your point when you say I'm having a love-fest over bludgeoning the 289th best team? It feels like you're saying the starters should have been sharper & should have played the bulk of the minutes, but at the same time you mock the competition so what's the point? Imagine if Rodney or Dre blew out a knee up by 30 in the second half? This is precisely the type of game you let the bench players gain experience & confidence. Bring on MSU.

What's lost is that we enter into the Big Ten Season like the Packers entered into the Playoffs last year...Rusty and untested for 20-some days. No continuity or rhythm. Our two most experienced players looked lost tonight. Andre made sloppy passes and was off on his shot...We need those guys clicking and I'm afraid we won't be able to "flick a switch" when the season starts.

Maybe all you guys are right and there's nothing to worry about...Forgive me if I don't join you in the love-fest after bludgening the 289th best team in college hoops.

Fair point about the fear of injuries but you really can't play a season in fear. I wasn't expecting the starters to play 30 minutes...20 to 25 would have been nice. They never really got into a flow and I think all the points they scored were off offensive rebounds. Dre is still developing and learning how to the play the point and he was sloppy and didn't get our offense into an aggressive, attack the basket mode. We moved the ball around the prerimeter and in many cases we wound up shooting a forced shot with the shot clock winding down. I think as a team we shot less than 20% on 1st shots of possession...I will go back and do a little statistical work to verify, but it was probably the worst our offense has played all season. The main problem is Andre's inability to create offense. I'm afraid we're gonna become a team that can only chuck it up on the rim and try to go after offensive rebounds. We could win 10 games that way in the Big 10, along with our defense and transition baskets, but in order to reach our goals (top 3 in the Big and sweet 16 or beyond) we'll have to become more efficient with our offensive sets and that starts with Andre. He has a lot on his shoulders.

Final tune-up before the real fun starts. Game was pretty much what I expected.

Beat State.
