I have to imagine the QB position will be a wide open competition come Spring and Fall. And not just a coach speak competition but a real one.

Nelson is the most talented of him and Leidner, but it's hard to make any judgement about Strevler or McKinzy when we haven't seen them play.

Not excited about any of the options right now. Really didn't expect PN9 to suck like that.

A transfer yet to be named from a CA Juco?

Brewer weighs in

Gee Jack. It's just too bad that "tough as nails" doesn't automatically translate to passing accuracy.

Disagree with Jack B. Nelson's head wasn't in the game as evidenced by the fumble on the jet sweep, not finding the open receiver and hurrying under a little pressure. Tonight, Leidner gave us a chance to win; Nelson didn't.

per ESPN:

What Minnesota learned: The QB competition is (and should be) open at Minnesota. Philip Nelson has had the advantage with the more reliable arm, but Leidner stepped in and threw Minnesota’s first passing touchdowns in months. Both played against Syracuse but the offense looked the best with Leidner and that's what Kill chose to go with when the game was on the line

I do agree though that this switching back and forth just doesn't work. You pick one guy and stick with him in my opinion.

Leidner didn't look that good early on either. Also remember, Leidner fumbled as well.

Maybe a much improved offensive line will help some.

Where are we going to find that? We've got most of the same guys back. Couple of redshirts, but I'm not betting there much better than what we currently see.

Play calling was abysmal for both when they were in at QB. If you ask me, Nelson just didn't look 'right' out there. Still messed up from the concussion maybe? Maybe his head just wasn't in it/ready to play/awful play? Who knows. My opinion, who has won a B1G Ten game? Nelson or Leidner? Enough said.

(It's obvi I'm a MJ backer BTW, I think he has the most talent)

Nelson has to get waaay better if he's going to the be guy. One thing that became obvious after he pulled his hammy is when he's in the game the QB run option almost goes completely away. I think our run O is better with Leidner. Really the only dig on Leidner is ball security. If he gets that squared away I think come next year he'll have fewer deer in the headlights plays than he had this year and he's our guy. I really could care less who plays as long as they can hit the open receiver most of the time. I think the biggest issue with our QB play right now right now is the mental and emotional toll it takes on our team (and probably coaches) when we have a good thing going and an open receiver and we miss them badly. Some of Nelson's throws we could have had Elliot Eliason standing on Mo Walker's shoulders and it still would have been over there heads. I don't get it. Leidner just needs more reps and he short armed a couple today but other than the one long ball to Wolitarsky he hit the open receiver tonight and generally does that more than Nelson so for now and until I see Nelson improve his accuracy a ton, Leidner is my guy. I don't even want to think about Steveler and watching another Freshman QB.

This.
The game was lost because of coaching. Period. We go run run run, ONE jet sweep. Then the next chance we give Nelson, was after almost a quarter and half and then go throw throw throw??? What coaching is that?! This coaching staff didn't want to show up til the 4th quarter. Stop blaming Nelson, Wolitarsky, the O-line...point the finger where it belongs.

Tracy Claeys for HC in 2014

Look for either Leidner or Nelson to be at #3 on the depth chart after spring practice. As with Shortell, one will be gone come fall. Bet on it.
Will be interesting to see if the boosters get Limegrover's head on a platter. Absolutely no imagination in play calling.

Kill would resign before he'd get rid of Limegrover. As long as Kill is here, Limey will unfortunately be our guy.

After today's game I would have Leidner in the starting spot but I would still have an open competition and they will have to bring it every practice. Strev should have a shot come spring and fall camp if he plays well but my money is on Leidner, but not much money.

Not much of a future with either Nelson or Leidner. Even when they do complete a pass it looks like a wounded duck. Nothing on it.

Nothing would surprise me at this point. Mitch had a couple of really nice series tonight. Nelson's had some too. Consistency is nonexistent.

The guy sitting next to TikiTed and I said that on WCCO they announced Nelson injured his shoulder on the first play from scrimmage (the offsides where he was blindsided and no personal foul penalty was called.). It made sense since Nelson hadn't done anything to merit being benched the entire 1st 1/2, especially since Leidner wasn't doing jack. When I saw him come out after 1/2 time I thought "Ok, he got it worked on and is going to try to make it work", so I just presumed he still wasn't right, which is why Leidner came back in?

What we learned this year is that we have two below average Big 10 quarterbacks. One of the QB's will have to improve significantly for this team to improve. I also agree that the play calling was terrible for most of the season. I can't understand how the play calling can be so creative against Nebraska and so basic against Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Syracuse.

i hope that Leidner seperates himself since he is just as fast as Nelson but a lot bigger, same caliber of runner as Jordan Lynch and MarQueis

Go Gophers!!

Not if he keeps overthrowing receivers by 10 yards.

I know Nelson elevated this program with his play during the 4 game win streak.

I also know that I cannot overstate how embarrassingly pathetic he has been in the past 3 games.

I also also know that he has yet to look like a functional QB against an above average pass defense in his career.
