I think this might be a case of coaches trying to shoehorn players to fit their "system," instead of tweaking the system to fit the players.

Just for fun, I would like to see the gophs experiment with a Georgia Tech-style triple-option attack. Kirkwood or Williams at FB, Cobb and (next year) Edwards at HB, and Leidner with the run-pitch-pass option.

You could switch things up by putting D. Jones at a HB - or trying a double-wing formation with one of the wings going in motion every play.

If you could get that type of an offense rolling, then mix in play-action passes to Maxx W. or Wolitarski, that could be a fun offense to watch.

This is a salient point that the coaching staff should really look closely at. You'd want to play to the strengths of your talent.

Whatever will increase confidence in our offense & QB play I am all for.

Bottom line,we expect Nelson and Leidner to be considerably better next season. In 2015, we'd like to see a Rose Bowl season!

You should really send Kill an email about this... in case he doesn't know.

I think it is more important to vote for guys who either aren't even here yet, nor have we seen on the field yet. I love the name dropping that people do to sound smart. :banghead:

Doc - Every time I see a discussions on who is going to be the starting QB I smile and think to myself thank god Jerry Kill and his staff will be making that decision.

Agreed....the unfortunate part about all of this is that we have a guy in Nelson that is entering his third year today and sitting here today we still can't say that he is going to be "the guy" to lead the team from the QB position. Whether it is Nelson, Leidner or one of the other guys I really hope that over the course of spring ball, summer, and fall camp the coaches can get one of these guys ready to take the position next fall and be the primary option under center.

Come on people...THINK just a little bit...

Coach Kill has always said that he wants multiple quarterbacks...he wants a BUNCH of quarterbacks that he can plug in...and take out...and have lots of options so that he can do things exactly the way he wants to do things when ever he wants to do these things. Sure, he likes the run-read...but he likes OPTIONS on his quarterbacks even more This is EXACTLY the way Coach Kill has set this situation up. This is EXACTLY what he wants. He wants fans on GOPHERHOLE to pull their hair out...to just go all out to try to trash the young college student athletes on the HOLE's discussion board making a case for their personal favorite over another kid. Coach Kill is playing with your minds GOPHERHOLE quarterback experts. You don't know just which one Coach Kill will call on at any given time. And, he will most likely just let all of you sit with this all summer lone and well into the season so you will just have to watch the games to see what happens. So, buy your tickets. Don't miss a single play, because you NEVER know just what Coach Kill will do with his quarterback situation. Just when you think you have it all figured out...he will pull the quarterback and go with another one for a while.

The Coach is and will be in charge of the quarterback controversy. To him, it is NO controversy. He knows that he will change them around, play them in different situations and play a number of them in a single game...IF he wants to. He's the head coach. He gets to do what HE wants to do. He really doesn't care what anyone else thinks. They pay him the big money to do what ever he wants to do.

None of you are totally correct. And, if you wait for a few games or so, EVERYBODY can be right...and wrong... The only thing that is certain is that a number of you will needlessly trash and be critical of some young student athletes. And, Coach Kill will be laughing at those of you who feel the strongest that you KNOW who will be THE quarterback for my Golden Gopher Football Team in 2014.

Just remember now people, Coach Kill is LAUGHING at your lobbying efforts and he KNOWS that in the end only HE will call the number of the kid he wants playing quarterback exactly when he wants to have any of the quarterbacks in the game. Just sit back and let the coach call the shots...it's damn sure that none of you will call the shots on this little quarterback controversy that some of you think you are weighing in on. This is EXACTLY what Coach Kill wants people.

And that's a pretty good thing for Coach Kill!

wren, finally one of your lengthy diatribes that I totally agree with. What you said is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and it also made me laugh. Ya done good, young man. :)

Totally with you on the part about Kill doing whatever the heck he wants with the QB situation but you are nuts if you think for one second that Kill and his staff are happy with the play they are getting from the QB position right now.

Yes, Kill wants multiple guys ready to go at that position, that is a reality for an offense that relies on the QB to run the ball but do you think if he were still at Northern and had Jordan Lynch that he would have been flip flopping him with another guy just because that is what he wants to do? He!! no he would have done what any coach with half a brain would do when he has a true #1 QB, he would have left him in the damn game and let the backup play during garbage time.

Our QB situation is the way it is right now because neither Leidner or Nelson has done enough for the coaches to look to him as the true #1 guy. Once one of them does that the other will still play from time to time but it won't be anything like what we are seeing right now.

I'm still going with what I said in a previous post. In all reality, the QB play is probably on par with the other offensive position groups, given this moment in time;

> the receivers ended the season with essentially freshmen at almost all positions. It's not like they had All-Americans running routes and pathetic QBs that couldn't get them the ball
> the O-Line finished the season with more underclass men than upper class men getting the minutes and are still at least a year away from looking like a typical B1G line also

Bottom line, Nelson and Leidner need to get better, but so do the other units. The QBs just get noticed more because they're the most visible.

Let's not forget about familiarity/security blanket for Nelson/Leidner down the stretch. Engel wasn't just the most productive receiver this season; he was also the receiver with whom the two QBs were most familiar. Jones and Wolitarsky are probably very talented, but it's not like they've spent the better part of the last two years working with the QBs like Engel had. It makes a difference.

Side note: I would love to know how Tommy O and Foster Bush graded out the last 2-3 games after stepping into the starting lineup. I doubt they were anywhere Christensen and Bak

The deal is that you bash the young players and don't bash the highly paid coach. It is up to the coach to make sure that he has the players to get the job done with the offense that the highly paid coach decides to go with. That same highly paid coach has highly paid assistant coaches to TEACH and DEVELOP the young student athlete players to get the job done with that damn offense that the highly paid coach forces his players to run. IF the players can't run the damn offense that the highly paid coach dictates, it is up to that highly paid coach to go out and get the young student athletes who can run the offense that he has dictated. That highly paid coach also has to surround those young student athlete quarterbacks with adequate support in the form of running backs, offensive linemen and a receiving corps to run the damn offense that the highly paid coach has dictated to these young student athlete quarterbacks.

I'm tired and fed up with the bashing of the young student athlete quarterbacks around here. IF you have to pi$$ and moan...go after the damn offense that the highly paid assistant coaches have been installing and that the even more highly paid coach has dictated. It is NOT so much a failure of the young student athlete quarterbacks as it is a failure of the coaching staff and the coaches to dictate an offense that their PLAYERS are not executing as well as needed to beat some of the BEST football teams in the Big Ten Conference (wisky and MSU) the final two games of the regular season. Other than Minnesota, some of the teams MSU beat were the Ohio State and Stanford. I guess this proves once and for ever that during the 2013 season Minnesota was NOT as good as either the Ohio State or Stanford...and even THEY struggled against and lost to MSU. Go figure.

But, wait a moment: under the leadership of the young student athlete quarterbacks during the 2013 Conference Schedule, my Golden Gophers WON four conference games in succession. That's RIGHT...these young quarterbacks that SOME of you people love to bash won FOUR stinking conference games in succession just a few months ago.

Hate on the coach...bash on the assistant coaches...they get paid a LOT of money to put up with your pi$$ing and whining. Yeah, they got beaten by wisky. They lost to MSU to end the regular season and they blew a lead in the final minute with poor special teams coverage of a punt against Syracuse in the bowl game. I don't know much about Syracuse...but...wisky was pretty tough until the end of the season and NOBODY in the conference OR not even the number 5 ranked team in America, Stanford beat MSU. IF you didn't see the struggles coming against MSU for our offense...I don't know what to say. But, my Gophers improved on the year before...AND...they never could have done that without the play of the young student athlete quarterbacks. Well done quarterbacks! Thank you for a great season! Don't let some of these people get you down!

I've just got to say that the young quarterbacks got my Golden Gophers EIGHT wins...four of them conference wins and an invitation to a bowl game during the 2013 season. And I fully back and support those young student athlete quarterbacks. I was...and I am damn proud of them. I like what the assistant coaches are doing. I like what our head coach is doing. BUT, don't go after the young student athlete quarterbacks those coaches are fortunate enough to have working to run the offense the coach dictates to them...go after the big buck coaches we have running the show. It is up to the coaches to put their players in positions they can succeed in and in situations they can WIN games with.

Don't you dare bash the student athletes. If you have got to bash...bash the highly paid coaches who call ALL the shots. That is if you have the courage to bash the highly paid coaches who call all the shots rather than the student athletes who are working so incredibly hard to do the bidding of their highly paid coaches who send them out there to run the offense that the highly paid coach is dictating to them.

Student athlete quarterbacks on my Golden Gopher Football Team: NEVER let the ba$tards and ba$hers get you down. Work hard, learn the offense, strive for great execution with the receivers, running backs and offensive line and I can hardly wait for the 2014 Big Ten Football Season!

Ok, Ok, Ok wren. I agree with some of what you wrote (I hate saything that), but you have forgotten one thing - the student athletes are the ones playing the game. If Nelson throws the ball 40 feet over the head of a wide open receiver from 10 yards away, are we supposed to blame Kill? Seriously. Nelson has the goods, but he might be getting the quarterbacks equivalent of the "Yips". He's going to need to deal with that on his own (it's a head thing) and not dependent on the highly paid coach (your words) to make that correction. He was never taught to miss his receivers by a country mile and he needs to work that out. I think he can.

You saying to blame the quarterbacking issue entirely on the coach would be like us blaming your stupid posts on your parents.

;0)

We do. I refuse to blame them on parski.

Limegrover is not the qb coach not that I think the QB coach is the problem, I do not.
How many great soph QBs have we had? Is there some reason you think a JUCO transfer will have more skill and smarts than two guys who already know the offense and have been in the program for two years.
The best odds are that the same guys will play next year that played this year, but they will be older and make fewer mistakes. Leidner for sure has a lot to learn in recognizing defenses and a big part of Nelson's issue just seems to be that he plays well when he is comfortable. The more he thinks about things the worse he throws. He played better this year than last year and he will be better every year. The next highest probability is that Streveler will make it a trio of playing qbs - hot hand starts.
Finally, just because the running game was better does not mean the pass protection was good; it was better, but it was not good consistently. We had better pass protection on most of Mase's teams than we had this year.
Let's face facts: Engel was the only WR with talent, technique, and knowledge of the offense for 2/3 of the season and he is not a possession receiver. he can't go over the middle or take jump balls away from defenders. He really is a white speed receiver. At MSU. Wisky, Iowa, etc., both Jones and Woli would probably have redshirted. They certainly would not have been go to guys in a bowl game.
To sum it up, we did not have a single strength that a good passing team would have, but go ahead and blame the QBs for the whole problem and or the QB coach. Fortunately the coaching staff knows the problem is a big one that just changing one player won't fix.
The QBs need to get better and they will, they do not have to be replaced.

I think the problem with Wren's posts is that he might make a good point from time to time but it gets lost in all the nearly unintelligible garbage that surrounds it that it gets hard to tell if it actually was a good point or if it just seems that way in the midst of the babble and odd punctuation. :)

I also agree with some of what he has to say....at least I think I do...

My guess is that it won't be Nelson.

I'm guessing that whichever quarterback plays on 1st 2nd and 3rd down the most will get the most snaps.

So what's the situation with Streveler? Any chance he can step in and start as a freshman? I've heard pretty good things about him.

I'd like to officially change my vote to Leidner.

i voted streveler and im sticking with that.

Look for either Leidner or Nelson to be at #3 on the depth chart after spring practice. As with Shortell, one will be gone come fall. Bet on it.
Will be interesting to see if the boosters get Limegrover's head on a platter. Absolutely no imagination in play calling.

Wow that was kind of prohetic like Doogies tweet from a guy in October from Mankato, there must have been rumblings about a Nelson transfer even back then. Gotta keep the Gophers program moving forward. Hopefully more guys are ready to push the train forward.
