Alabama wins out including SEC championship
Notre Dame wins out including ACC championship
The big ten champ is unbeaten
Cincinnati wins out including AAC championship.

Pretty clear:
1) Alabama (SEC)
2) Notre Dame (ACC)
3) Northwestern/Ohio state winner (B10)


your options:
11-0 Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt)
10-0 Marshall (CUSA)
10-0 Cincinnati (AAC)
10-0 BYU (Ind)
7-0 Oregon (pac 12)
10-1 Miami (ACC)
8-1 Texas A&M (SEC)
1 loss Ohio state/Northwestern Loser (B10)
8-1 Indiana or 5-1 Wisconsin (B10)

What this country really needs to eventually get to is a 12 or 16 team playoff where every conference champ gets an auto bid. We could realistically end the season with FOUR unbeaten conference champs who don’t get in plus an unbeaten independent who had originally scheduled themselves 6 power 5 games
 


In response to my own question. If Oregon looks good going 7-0 I’d tend to pick them.

I'd probably go Cinci (I don't think the committee would do this as they have historically given zero love to the G5). Has destroyed pretty much everyone they've played and Oregon's schedule via an abysmal PAC12 North is going to be weak (really the P12 champ will have one shot at a premier win and that's going to be the CC game and that means they REALLY need both teams to be undefeated). Maybe 2020 is the chance we see for it to happen. Cinci will have the advantage of extra games played which could be the difference.

This is going to be a weird year how the committee weighs different teams having vastly different numbers of games played.

I too would like to see Cinci.

my biggest issue with not including all conference champs every year is there is not enough data to really say who the “best teams” are because it’s subjective.
So then we get into a SOS debate and we say “well a second SEC team is more deserving because of SOS” but SOS is also subjective because there aren’t enough games to correctly distinguish between 130 FBS schools.

especially this year because of little to no non-conference.

Ohio state is going to go probably because the big ten is stronger than the pac 12....but how do we really know that?

The only thing that is fair and the least flawed system would give all 10 conferences and auto bid like all other levels of football and basketball.

If Coastal Carolina doesn’t deserve to be in...they get blown out....no big deal.

If coastal deserves to be in...we better not leave them out because we think we know they didn’t.
 

I know you're dreaming of Cincy getting a shot, but that won't happen sorry.

It would either be Texas A&M (only loss to #1 Alabama) or Clemson (only losses to #2 Notre Dame). Guessing TA&M.

EDIT: if Oregon is undefeated and passing the "eye test", they'd probably rather have them in than a team with a loss (or two).
 


I don't think an undefeated Pac 12 team would be selected, based on how few games they all played and the strength of that conference not being great. A 8-1 A&M would be the most likely selection, as they are currently #5 anyways.

I actually would rather see BYU or Coastal in the tourney than Cincinnati
Don’t think any of them will get in.
 

I too, would love to see BYU. I think they could actually hang around with the big boys. They've got a top-tier offensive line and an elite QB...that's enough to compete.

I just think the powers that be will keep the big money teams in the playoff:

Clemson
ND
tOSU
Bama

My personal preference has always been an 8 team playoff. In this weird Covid year, you would really think any of the 8 teams would have a shot...

You think 2-loss Clemson makes the playoff?
If they do, I think the pac 12 and big 12 should just flat out refuse to participate in future years.

clemson would’ve had 2 chances to beat notre dame and failed both times. No they go get a third chance while we leave out other conference champions because of the eye test?


The team I think it might end up being that I don’t think deserves it at all is Texas A&M

I don't think the College Football Kabal will allow Clemson to lose again, which was me dodging the original question.

If they do lose again to ND (which won't happen with Lawrence playing), I see Oregon making the playoff over BYU and Cincinnati who are more deserving

I wonder how long till they go to 8 teams - i think it is more equitable and leaves less room for griping as thee is a bigger difference between being the 9th best team and not making it vs. being the #5 team in that same scenario.

An 8 team playoff this year would still likely leave out 2-3 unbeaten teams

although this is an odd year


I would love the NCAA to take over FBS postseason and have an NCAA tourney like every other level of the sport

I agree, but I want it to me contained as to the number of teams invited. I think the most would be ten (?) and the top 2 seeds get a first round bye.

Along that vein, i'd much rather see Coastal Carolina in it then a second SEC team; I think that only expands the map of interest and gives teams like that a legit shot. Everyone loves Cinderella right?

Yup. And if they don’t deserve to be there, they lose.
No harm no foul.

Unless you feel like a second SEC or ACC team is really deserving after not winning their conference

I'm exhausted by all things SEC at this point.
 

Hoping NC beats ND today - they match up well with them and let as much chaos reign as possible in 2020 at his point.
 

I think we are kidding ourselves here...it’s 2 loss Georgia or 2 loss Florida.

If the SEC didn’t get 2 teams no matter what it would be the weirdest 2020 moment yet

Why BYU?
Their SOS is terrible. They can’t be judged against anyone of decent caliber.

Have you seen UC play? They are well coached and have playmakers on both sides of the ball. Their quarterback and touch and can run.

Not sure where the infatuation is coming from if we are looking at data...

Because I don’t think UCs defense actually holds up against the top end offenses

The way that UC, Marshall, BYU, or Coastal beats a top end team this year is by out scoring them. I think BYU has the best chance of the 4 to do that.

I really don’t care about SOS at all. There aren’t any non conference games so SOS means nothing but eye test. Cinci hasn’t beaten anyone either. Cinci’s best win is SMU who managed to beat Texas State by 7 I suppose. My eye test tells me Cincinnati’s defense isn’t good enough to shut down any of the top 4s offenses

Couldn't agree more. All 10 conference champs should be automatic otherwise it is not a true playoff
 

Put the alert out on Oregon. Even if they do manage to win, going to be real tough to be impressive enough to merit consideration in the scenario above

Yeah. I actually think Notre Dame beats Clemson again. They’re a good well-rounded team.

does 5-0 non big ten champ Ohio state get in (because they are intelligible for big ten title game at only 5 games played)
