Who do you want to be the next Gophers AD?

Would it kill the U to hire somebody who actually lives and bleeds maroon and gold?

Last time we did that (Mac Boston), said lover of maroon and gold allowed the biggest (at that time) academic scandal in college sports history to happen under his watch. The time before that (Paul Giel), said lover of maroon and gold moved us from on campus into the Dome.

Go Gophers!!

Excellent points.

That's an uncalled for and inaccurate shot at Giel. Though technically correct, if people are unaware of Giel's opposition to it and his work against it. He had his faults but he fought the move and tried to raise the money to remodel Memorial Stadium. His trips to the Capital lobbying for that money were ultimately unsuccessful when the big money guys in town wanted the U Downtown to make their dream for a Vikings Dome a reality.

You want to champion a non-local A.D.? Chris Voletz and Norwood Teague are the most recent examples. There were two directors who certainly didn't "bleed Marood and Gold".

Oddly enough they are all left out of the discussions about the absolute need to bring in someone who doesn't give a damn about the University but is solely focused on their own career.

Okay....my bad. I had thought that the state of Minnesota and its fine university would have by now produced somebody that could do that job.

Duly noted and not intended to be a cheap shot.

J Robinson..............god would that piss off some people.

Reading this piece leaves me, at least initially, impressed with Beth Goetz. I realize she is relatively young (for a school this size), and often associates don't get bumped up to the top gig, but I'm sure she will get serious consideration. By the way, anyone know if she is single? ;)

A former football player that I work with said she is married or has a partner. I cant remember which. He spoke highly of her.

She is actually a lesbian. Her partner works for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The major purpose of the A.D. now is to raise funds. You think it doesn't matter where the person comes from when they are trying to get people to write that check? Your position is that it doesn't matter if the person has any previous contact with or knowledge of present and potential donors? You think that someone coming over from Mozambique who was a solid administrator, that would make him a big time fundraiser too? That theknowledge of the donor base and being tone-deaf to it and to ticket holders would be no problem at all?

That's what Kaler thought too when he brought in Teague. It was a big mistake.

They don't need to just start over, if not from ground zero, than at the $120 million they still apparently need.

This NEVER HIRE LOCAL talk is getting real old and is very short-sighted.
Ditto the above - hiring local makes sense now.

Jerry Kill could resign as head coach, promoting Tracy Claeys (wouldn't we all want him to be next up if Kill had to retire for any reason?) in his stead. Once that happens, he's free to accept the position of Athletic Director and can work with the team on a voluntary basis, as time and scheduling permit. Solved!

Two M men with no experience in the field.

I believe you already knew that.
By that reasoning, they also shouldn't hire anyone with some experience as an AD (see Teague & Maturi).

And by that reasoning they should not hire a male.

And by that reasoning they should not hire anyone over 21 yr of age.

And by that reasoning they should not hire anyone that is living and breathing.:cool02:

Flip Saunders has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Are you available?

I'm jumping on the Najarian bandwagon. Give Beth more power and more influence. Bring Pete in as the overall AD and let's go raise some money.

Or make Pete #2 and in charge of fundraising.

Even though I wrote earlier about finding the best person, and not being provincial and having to hire someone with Minnesota ties, I actually think he'd be a good choice. He's clearly smart and successful, gets football, and would probably stay in the job for many years to come (I think that last point is very important - we've had far too many AD's over the last 20 years). He's also well-known, not only locally, but nationally. And yes, he has deep ties to the U.

Someone mentioned Gene Taylor earlier. While not "one of us," he's been regional enough that he probably knows a bit about Minnesota. He also has a history working with Sanford on facility funding.
