Where are the Leidner haters?

Nobody was forcing Leidner to throw into double and triple coverage, instead of throwing it away or checking down (doesn't always seem to have that option). He protects the ball instead of giving them short fields then the defense maybe, just maybe can hang on and keep it close. It's a failure of the QB and the coaching staff. If the staff gets credit when the team plays well then they get tomatoes when the team plays poorly.

One of the worst things to happen yesterday was the completion to Wolitarsky. The one where he was in the middle of 3 guys. That seemed to give Mitch confidence that he could make that throw again and again.

He couldn't, but he certainly tried.

Totally agree. When we were slapping each other on the back after that I was thinking this is the Gophers game to win. The jump ball to Rodney was similar.

I was wondering where WaitWhat? was in his moment of triumph. Sadly, he was mostly right. Leidner did not maintain or progress his senior season but instead badly regressed in spectacular fashion and ought not to be the QB of this team. Since there is but one game remaining the situation will resolve itself without the coaches needing to make a hard decision.

I wanted Leidner to do well, because that would mean the Gophers would do well.

But, in the end, Leidner went backwards this year. Last year, he was playing with a bad foot. This year he was healthy - and played worse. What was different? new OC and QB coach. You can't separate one from the other. The players play, and the coaches coach. The coaches work with the players during the week, decide who will play, draw up the game plan and call the plays. The coaches also have the responsibility for making adjustments during the game.

If the QB cannot or will not run the offense correctly, then either change the offense or change the QB. The Gopher coaches did neither. They kept doing the same thing and hoping for a different outcome.

As I said in a different thread, if I was assessing responsibility for the second half debacle, I would put it as Leidner 35%, Johnson 35%, Claeys 30%. If a player can't do the job, and the coaches leave him out there, that's on the coaches. If the coaches cannot or will not make adjustments, that's on the coaches.

Mitch Leidner may have let down the Gopher fans - but the Gopher Coaches let down Mitch Leidner.

And- if the Coaches truly believed that Leidner was not the best option, but left him out there, then fire their butts now. If Green or Croft could have helped the Gophers beat Wisconsin, then play them. There more I think about it, the madder I am at the coaches - not Leidner.

I was thinking the same thing-- I believe after the 3rd pick we were still only a TD down. Most of us were not shocked he threw another INT. They should have made the change from Leidner who was obviously rattled and mentally unprepared to finish the game strong

Got to sit him for a series or run a 'sure thing' pass like a screen pass to get his confidence back. The coaches didn't do him any favors and we have reels of tape showing ML has never risen from ashes when these things start to snowball.

I really don't know why we did not attempt more screens in the 2nd half to slow down the rush. The way WI was penetrating without much opposition, they would not even suspect the screen.
