What is the number one change you'd make to the cuurrent program?

Until the Gophers recruit like a top 20 team in the nation, they will have a hard team competing like one. We can complain about coaches, play calls, schemes, practice facilities, etc. but the biggest difference between the Gophers and North Carolina, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and others is talent.

Here's a better idea. Hire a proven QB coach. Not someone just because they played here. The provincialism in this state makes me sick sometimes.
[/QUOte.

I don't see Minnesota as provincial. I'd say it's oh so proud of its cosmopolitanism.

Certainly true. Now how do you get top recruits to agree to come to Minneapolis? To answer that, we ought to ask those who won't why they won't. With proper interviewing techniques, we might find out why

No doubt. The state of Minnesota has a ton of big business and lots of money. Just need to tap into that big bank. Sadly this is what college has become with the nil. They definitely need big backers to compete. I don’t pretend to know if they have them or not but perhaps some of you guys do. Seems to be the way of things currently

"Sadly this is what college has become..." "Sadly" doesn't begin to describe what's happening to college football.

Bring in Adam Weber or Tanner Morgan to be a QB whisperer. Athan isn't developing; in fact, he appears to be going backward. Zero touch on long balls; painful to watch compared to the dimes Maye was dropping into receivers' hands on deep balls. AK is also throwing behind receivers on intermediate crossing routes. We'll go an entire season without explosive plays unless this gets addressed. Harbaugh apparently isn't the guy. Bring in Weber or Tanner to work one-on-one with Athan.
I’d rather hire someone who you actually know can do this. We’rea big ten school. We have the money

I'd start by replacing the two OCs. Neither has proven anything over the course of their careers. I'd tell Coyle we need to pay up to bring in a PROVEN power 5 OC with the ability to identify and coach up the QB position specifically. Athans lack of development, now in year 3, is disturbing. And the current passing attack is an absolute embarassment for a Big Ten team that is in year 7 under the current regime. We will never win anything if this remains the status quo offensively.
This is an off-season consideration. Can’t be done now.

Have you seen the games in person (I had to cancel going to Nebraska)? TV usually doesn't show the whole field so it's tough to know if Athan's timing is off on developing routes or if he's missing open receivers. I'm truly curious what attendees think about this.

The contrast with Maye was huge. Maye waits for the route to develop and if there's not enough time either runs or throws the ball away.

Edit add: Maye also had one guy that consistently got open, sometimes wide open, in McCollum who caught 15 passes. This seams to be common with successful passing teams.
That was a scheme call. It was almost the same route and spot every time. Lindsay outcalled Rossi on that matchup/location

Heard the comment made yesterday that the football team wasnt able to practice indoors during parts of the week. I don't know any of the logistics behind that and don't want to mispeak myself - BUT - It's football season. Prioritize who gets access to the indoor facility when needed.
Was outdoors closed?

What is the benefit of the OC also being the QB coach? I know Fleck goes for that, but is that the norm? The problem with proven P5 OCs is that they want to get paid, which we won’t do, or they want to be HCs. Maybe bringing in an understudy of a premium OC would be the answer.
NC brought in a new OC this year. We saw a very sophisticated passing attack yesterday. Great QB aside, the OCs first year at NC.

First year at unc, but nearly a decade of OC/HC experience.

The plays are fine.

Players just aren’t making the plays.

There’s no magic an OC can work where a guy misses a pass, misses a block, or drops a ball suddenly doesn’t happen….

Oh I’m sorry I’ll call the other play where the dude is open or the ball hits you in the hands…
Agree to disagree on the play calling.

Iowa and Wisconsin did that very thing for years...compete like a top 20 team. There are plenty other examples as well.

Gophers last in offense in the Big 14 today, and last in passing proficiency. But Taylor is second in rushing.

PJ and crew have done a good job of molding 2* and 3* players, but rarely bag a difference-maker, a 4* or 5* player, especially on offense, who can really put them up a notch. Minnesota, in general, hasn't had a really superior QB in decades.

You can find outliers, sure. Iowa and Wisconsin are typically the fourth or fifth best team in our conference. I'll take my chances with a top fifteen recruiting class or even landing a consistent top five big ten recruiting class over the other reasons offered in this thread. If we just had a different OC.....if the refs hadn't screwed us......what if we didn't have to practice outdoors.....etc. etc.

MN is not going to land top 15 national or consistent top 5 conference recruiting classes. The conference usually only has 2-4 teams in the top 20 nationally.

This is so true. Folks bitching about play calling wouldn’t be saying a word on here had AK8 hit those three obvious TD passes for touchdowns. We’d have won the ball game and people would be talking about how aggressive the offensive game plan was. Not to mention all of the drops, of which there were several, many of which would have been first downs.

Now, I’m not ripping AK8. I fully expect him to have games where he shines and games where he looks like what he really is….an inexperienced power 5 QB, learning every week how to win games. I’m still stunned that people expect him to go out and play flawless football at this early stage. He’s gonna be fine folks. He’s gonna get better and learn to hit those receivers when he gets more comfortable, which only comes by playing in live games with the bullets flying, not practice. Folks clamoring for Kramer yesterday?? WTF?!?!?

You should all be much more concerned about receivers, experienced receivers, who can’t catch footballs.

We have found our running back.
The offensive line is progressing.
Our defense, even without Lindenburg, is stout against the run, which will play well in conference.
We have a legitimate pass rush.

Take care of business the next two weeks and we will be 4-1 after the first 5 games, and 2-0 in conference . Every damn one of you would have taken that if offered before the season started.

We are fine and headed in the right direction.

It’s interesting that arguably three best players on defense yesterday were transfers from small schools - Baugh, Henderson, and Jones.

And Taylor had one carry the first game. Another question for Fleck and Harbaugh. Did you only discover Taylor is the most gifted recruit in decades on September 9 or did you see that in Spring and Fall camps? Why not use him in the first game?

Guarantee they were looking to redshirt him. Sort of begs the question of if Fleck is playing the best players regardless.

Wonder if he hadn't shown as much in practice?

I think sometimes coaches get paralyzed by what they see in practice.

Sometimes, stuff just works in the pressure of the game. People focus in, plays work that didn't in practice.

I don't disagree but unless that changes the ceiling for this team will be 6th or 7th in conference with the additional teams coming. Talent rules in my view.

Don’t agree they were going for redshirt. Wanted to bring him along slowly. But why? He couldn’t go through Spring and Fall camp without anyone seeing he needs to play.
