What is Coyle's, "keep Ben, win tally?"

If he stays another year he will get a contract extension. His buyout will never get lower than it is right now.
Yeah, don't see his buyout being a factor in whether or not he is back coaching the team next season. All going to come down to how they do on the court over the remainder of the season.

Let's say that Ben goes on a good enough run where the decision is a close call. If Coyle wants to keep him but minimize risk, he could tell Ben that he gets a one or two year extension but with minimal buyout.
I don't think Ben has even an ounce of negotiation leverage, so I would assume he would take anything as this is the best job he is getting anytime in the next decade.

Extensions are not needed as much in the portal age. Very few players are making a 4 year plan anymore that requires coach security.
I'm sure it will only be a one year extension but that will still keep the buyout where it is. It's minimal. But it's not getting any lower.

I understand that basically EVERY P5/6 HC has a buyout. But why! I’m unqualified just like Ben when he was hired. I’d be fine with 2mil/yr and NO buyout. If Coyle told Ben yes to an extension but with no buy out of course Ben would say yes. There is no law saying a coach has to have a buyout.

Buyouts provides the fired coach with a cushion for the time period from when they get fired until they find another job.

No guarantee they will be able to find a job right away or find a job that pays anything close to what they were making when they got fired.

Plus I believe many buyouts have a clause in them that eliminates the buyout if the coach finds and equivalent job. Pretty sure that is what happened with Pitino.

Of course there's no law. But other coaches will beat you over the head with it in recruiting. "Don't go there. He's about about to be fired. They won't even give him a buyout. He's basically already a dead coach walking."

If you're that unsure of Ben, fire him and get another coach in here. He has two years left on his contract. It almost never goes lower than that. So he will either be fired or extended. That's just the reality.

Johnson’s buyout is a factor. Any new coach would cost more than Johnson’s $2.079 million contract plus the buyout. I think he’s here another year.
That is peanuts man...

The number is probably less than what I think Coyle's number is, but I will say his number is 10. It would be a non-losing regular season in conference and improvement from last year, and show Ben can reassemble a team with significant departures and still increase the win total.

Best get another Garcia each year then.
