Week 6 Other Games Thread

I think Dantonio will have his players' attention this week. Didn't put pedal to the medal and almost got burned. This was a "survive and advance" finish for Sparty.

I think we have Northwestern right where we want them. Overlooking us. Would be a HUGE win if we can get it.

Utah beating up on UCLA right now in the 3rd.

#'s 2,3, and 4 all lost today. Good day for state of Mississippi.

Oh, USC lost too. Good week for Arizona schools.

And what a fine ending to the game. Man I wish I was home to watch the afternoon games.

After a day like today Michigan State definitely has a fighting chance. SEC champ gets in and a one-loss SEC team gets in. IMO (after a quick run through of the Top 25) the two other spots would go to an undefeated Florida State team, an undefeated UCLA, an undefeated Notre Dame and the winner of Baylor-TCU.

BUT if any of the of five teams mentioned above lose a game I think MSU could sneak in given the quality of their loss. Even after flopping vs AZ, losing to Oregon on the road is more defendable than any of the others dropping a game to a random ACC/Pac 10/Big 12 team.

And if everyone in the SEC but the SEC champ loses two games, there are three open playoff spots for six teams.

Watching the UCLA/Utes game, and wow...are the officials quick on the whistle when UCLA gets even close to stopped.

And Good Lawd, are they humping the leg of Hundley talking about him for Heisman every time he throws the ball.

And...down goes UCLA. Too bad. Chaos. How are the voters going to assess this mess?

WSU's QB Halliday threw 49/70 for 734 yards & 6 TDs?! HOOOOOOOLY SHNIIIIIIIIKEYS..

WSU had over 800 total yards of offense, and lost by one point. 60-59

Pac 12 is frickin' crazy. Everyone already has a conference loss except for Arizona. Odds are there are going to be a lot of 2-loss teams there. I wouldn't rule out any 1-loss Big Ten team that runs the table, most specifically Sparty, Nebraska, or Ohio State. Will be tough for any of those 3, but Sparty probably has the best chance.

There are only 10 unbeatens left, and there will be at most 8 after next week. TCU @ Baylor and Auburn @ Mississippi State.

I don't mean to make this blatantly full of homerism, but why not MN? Only loss to a soon to be top ten TCU and if they run it will have wins over osu neb wisc and likely mich st. We control our fate from the get go in the west. Now they just gotta take care of business. The teams we needed to pick up losses have done so early

Talk about an absolute turn coat. Dude has become nothing more than another Espin shill for the sec network and it's teams.

ESPN loves the SEC, for $$$ lots $$$$$ of $$ reasons $$$$$$$$$$$.

Except for the games they present on their channels (such that ESPN is the place I must watch them), I have pretty much stopped watching ESPN altogether. If I want baseball, I head to MLB network. Football highlights are better elsewhere. These were my preferences before I realized ESPN was that intertwined with the SEC.

Imagine the reactions to these type of games if we had Leach as our head coach like some wanted. People complained about the lack of defense under Mason. Cal scored 47 in the second half. No thanks.

The teams combined to score 56 points in the third quarter and Trevor Davis of Cal returned two kickoffs for TDs in that quarter (98 & 100 yds).

So what does the top 10 look like tomorrow? My guess:

1. Florida St.
2. Auburn
3. Baylor
4. Notre Dame
5. Ole Miss
6. Alabama
7. Oregon
8. Mississippi St.
9. Michigan St.
10. Oklahoma

Looks about right. The SEC is going to continue to knock each other off. They could have the 4 best teams in all of football and still only send one team to playoff. I love weeks that have so many upsets. Very interesting to watch.

FSU, Baylor, TCU, Oregon, Michigan St. (to name several)...none of them are better than SEC's #4, according to that statement?

In every conference, the teams "knock each other off," not just the SEC.

Seems about right to me as well, but I'd bet Mississippi St. jumps Oregon, and possibly Alabama too.

I think you missed TCU.

My ranking for what its worth

1.Florida State
2. Auburn
3. Baylor
4. Ole Miss
5. Mississippi State
6. TCU
7. Alabama
8. Notre Dame
9. Oregon
10.Michigan State

Even Reddit CFB chimed in on the Gophers' only loss

This looks about right for the moment.

That being said, IMO, both Auburn and Notre Dame are over rated and Oklahoma is better than some on the list.

FSU will be there at the end, they really only have one more tough game (Notre Dame). Baylor will lose at least 2, Oregon will lose another (although Pac 12 is in same boat of knocking each other off), and one of OSU or Mich St will be in consideration at the end. Granted this is all conjecture, but I think this year we are more likely to see 4 conference champs, which I'm guessing they are going for anyway. I never liked a team that didn't win their conference being in the national championship.

That is an interesting read. The circular logic of the best recruits go to SEC teams thus SEC teams are better thus voters are swayed to place so many SEC in top 10 is hard to deconstruct.

The best way to promote egalatarianism in college football is have, at minimum, a 6 team playoff with the power 5 champions and an at large team from the other conferences. Personally I'd prefer a slightly larger number of teams to avoid the embarrassing beauty contest we're already engaged in this year. Cynically, this is also why it will never happen.

Keep the playoff to conference champions only and it solves the debate.

Based off my eyeball test ands gut feelings this is my ranking as of this week.

1. Baylor
2. TCU
3. Notre Dame
4. Florida State
5. Ole miss
6. Michigan State
7. Mississippi State
8. Oklahoma
9. Alabama
10. Ohio State

Auburn was gifted a win at Kansas State. They didn't look like anything special. It was more a matter of KSU losing the game than Auburn winning it.

Oregon does not belong in the top 10 right now.

I'd put Michigan State around 5 or 6, Notre Dame a little higher and TCU ahead of the Mississippi teams right now.

Having watched some FSU games this year I think TCU could beat them. They are this year's overrated team. Go Irish.

It's an interesting argument. Right now, SEC #4 is Alabama.

I'd take Alabama over all 5 of the teams you listed. The Big Ten is not as terrible as ESPN makes everyone think (although the Big Ten does need to revamp something), but the SEC is just really really really good. As a conference, they really are two steps above the next in my opinion. I'd say 10 of their 14 teams are top 30 (give or take) in the country.
