Right, but the problem is the polls become biased based on the prior week's ranking. So, early season bias translates into end of season success.
Exactly.

The wacked out early season polls have an effect on lots of things and that is why they aren't "meaningless". The SEC has been able to inflate their rankings when rankings actually matter, thanks to their preseason and early season poll placings for years. Plus, being ranked early gets your squad on the most likely televised games and highlight packages - keeping you on the radar for later season rankings.

Yes and no. if you have 3 or more losses rankings mean little. I hate the early season polls as well, but by the end of the year 0-2 losses is where you need to be for a really special season.

Rankings garner attention to games each week.

I know it doesn’t mean sh#t, but I can’t believe the Gophers can’t get a single vote in AP or Coaches Polls. Long term coach, consistent winning records, it’s starting to bug me, especially when you see who is getting votes.

Texas drop looks about right.

Score close, but man Texas ... not a lot of confidence after that first QB throw and not much after that either.

Not established as a winner.
Losing record in 2023.
Huge let down in 2020 after Covid. Not that I blame anyone for that.
Bowling Green.

PJ has had one really good year and a couple of pretty good ones. He needs to avoid the 6-7 season of 2023 and needs another 10 win year to really be recognized IMO.

I say this as someone who really likes Fleck.

Tough to see Iowa State up there ...

You REALLY think Bowling Green has something to do with voters this season??? Give me a break.....SMH

Georgia Tech (17) 1-0; Navy (17) 1-0; Nebraska (13) 1-0; Memphis (11) 1-0; South Florida (9) 1-0; Duke (5) 1-0; Kansas (4) 2-0; Washington (3) 1-0; Vanderbilt (2) 1-0; FIU (1) 1-0;

90-60 record since ‘13 and can’t get a vote? Comparable or better to the guys listed above?

I’m not asking for top 25, I’m looking for ONE, just ONE Vote.

Plus I’m kinda bored.

It has to help recruiting also.

We are talking about getting votes - not a top 10 ranking. Fleck continues to put people into the NFL each year and continues to win on a consistent basis. While it doesn't mean we will win 9 or 10 games this year, it does mean that the probabilty of doing so is 20-30%. One would think 1 coach and/or one media member would be willing to be their vote on this probability. I think we have a better chance of this than Nebraska, Vandy, Duke, Kansas and Washington. We should be getting at least some votes - nothing more.

I don't think think we have earned one for this year yet / given much reason to give us votes ... last year was a fun year but nothing to indicate we were going to be great this year.

Neither have some others, if you have to list 25 you certainly will list some of those, but that doesn't make the Gophers anymore deserving.

Beat Cal, even in a close game, and I’m sure we’ll at least be getting votes after they showed out against Oregon State.

You inadvertently are making the point of the person you are responding to without even realizing it. The point was the Gophers have become consistent winners under fleck so why don't they even get a single vote in the polls. You respond to suggest they don't deserve it with some things that wouldn't be held against any other team!

Not established as a winner? - The point of the post you were responding to is that the Gophers ARE now a consistent winner.

Losing record in 2023? - The Gophers went 6-7 in 2023 with a bowl win and THAT is keeping them from getting a single poll vote? Yikes.

Covid season? - Does this mean the Gophers are the only team in college football being held accountable for a disappointing covid season. They couldn't even field a team for several weeks. What other teams are getting held back in the polls due to their disappointing covid season? Penn State?

Bowling Green? - Seriously? Impacting poll voting in 2025?

Why do you think they got zero votes?

I like PJ, I think he's great. There are lots of teams that have won more than MN and done have votes either.

Lets stop feeling sorry for ourselves and just win games. Everything will take care of itself then.

Early season rankings, reflecting non-conference games, seem to be influenced by the beating (or lack thereof) that teams put upon lesser opponents. For instance, last week, Illinois beat Western Illinois 52-3. Showed no mercy; poured it on. Indicative of firepower = higher ranking.

PJ, perhaps preparing his team for close games later in the season, seems never to take lesser teams to the woodshed. He almost never pours it on, going for a blow out. He could easily have scored another TD against Buffalo in the 4th Q instead of going on a 10 minute drive to simply hold the ball. A 30-10 score would have “showed” better for ranking purposes. But the Gophs instead practiced closing out a game via opponent strangulation.

Will the Gophers pour it on against Northwestern State? Will they score 50 or 60 points, as many ranked teams would automatically do? Or will we use the game as a scrimmage to teach and analyze, winning by 15 to 20 points? The way PJ plays non-conference games against lesser teams IMHO keeps us off the rankings board early. We don’t demolish lesser teams, which leaves the issue whether we actually have a strong “rankable” team, But, as we win B1G games, our star is burnished and ranking votes start to show up.

I don’t think they got zero votes. I KNOW they got zero votes. I know this because I read the OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES section of both polls.

Let’s stop ridiculing others for finding faults in the early season polls and just admit they are mostly a popularity contest. And then admit how flawed early season polls impact media coverage, later season polls, and potentially even recruiting.

National media knows nothing about us nor do they care. Which is fine, let us fly under the radar.

This is why I wish CFP selection ran like the NCAA hockey tourney with the PWR. Still have the rankings to drive interest and fan discussion, but who gets in is based solely on what happens on the ice/field, no human judgment.

Nebraska, overrated as usual!

Fair enough.

If the Gophers got say 33 votes in the poll would you feel the same way?

I don’t really think the amount of votes in the poll effect recruiting for MN. But that’s just my opinion. What was our ranking for 2020 or 2021 recruiting? That would have been impacted by our very good 2019 season.
