Early season rankings, reflecting non-conference games, seem to be influenced by the beating (or lack thereof) that teams put upon lesser opponents. For instance, last week, Illinois beat Western Illinois 52-3. Showed no mercy; poured it on. Indicative of firepower = higher ranking.
PJ, perhaps preparing his team for close games later in the season, seems never to take lesser teams to the woodshed. He almost never pours it on, going for a blow out. He could easily have scored another TD against Buffalo in the 4th Q instead of going on a 10 minute drive to simply hold the ball. A 30-10 score would have “showed” better for ranking purposes. But the Gophs instead practiced closing out a game via opponent strangulation.
Will the Gophers pour it on against Northwestern State? Will they score 50 or 60 points, as many ranked teams would automatically do? Or will we use the game as a scrimmage to teach and analyze, winning by 15 to 20 points? The way PJ plays non-conference games against lesser teams IMHO keeps us off the rankings board early. We don’t demolish lesser teams, which leaves the issue whether we actually have a strong “rankable” team, But, as we win B1G games, our star is burnished and ranking votes start to show up.
