I could only find one profile on Sonie, on Scout:

Varmah Sonie Profile - Scout

Monter had a great interview with him recently, that's listed on his page. Here's what he mentioned about being recruited:

Sonie is hearing from a variety of schools.

"North Dakota State, St. Cloud State, South Dakota State, Winona State, Moorehead State and a little bit from Minnesota. Moorehead offered me a partial scholarship," he said.

Sonie shined at the Minnesota passing camp and is hearing from the Gopher coaches.

"I am in contact with Coach Roof right now," he said. "We are just talking back and forth. Nothing really serious."

These were his comments on his friendship with Bryce McNeal:

Sonie is close friends with Breck wide receiver Bryce McNeal. He visited Michigan and attended the 7-on-7 passing camp in Akron with McNeal, who committed to the Wolverines, but decided to re-open his recruitment. Minnesota is recruiting McNeal and there has been speculation that the two could wind up at Minnesota together.

"Me and Bryce have talked about it," Sonie said. "Bryce said that if the U offered me, that he would go there. We'll see what happens. Me and Bryce are like best friends."

Sonie said that the two talked about McNeal's recruitment quite often.

"He said that he visited Oregon a couple of weeks ago and he said that he really liked it down there. He is just waiting on the U to offer me to see what happens."

McNeal has kept his recruitment close to the vest, but Sonie said that the two talk about where the Breck wide receiver might play college football.

"I ask him, but he kinds wants me to keep it on the down low. I can't really say," he said.

"Bryce said that if the U offered me, that he would go there." "He is just waiting on the U to offer me to see what happens."

No brainer Brewster. Lock down McNeal

No guarantees on that, and I don't trust the word of a lot of 17/18 year-olds...

...that said, if he's Mr. Football here, then he's probably a guy we should have an offer to, regardless of his recruiting ranking, since he's already proven that he can succeed in the right scenarios. And for that I'd feel that he deserves an offer to his home-state school.

His only offer so far is a partial scholarship from Moorehead St? Seems a little weird to me. Has anyone seen this guy play? Does he have any potential? If it helps bring McNeal here lets get him some type of offer (maybe a half or something)....

I agree that we should extend an offer to Sonie and I'll add that it should be regardless of whether we need him or not. He's Minnesota's Mr. Football and prep players all over the state will notice where he goes to play college ball and if an offer isn't extended will wonder why the Gophers slighted the best player in the state. I'm not arguing that he is the best player, just that many/most will consider it so because of his being selected Mr. Football. In addition to getting a gamer, it would be a good PR move for future Minnesota players.

I haven't seen him play but those who have say he's just a couple sizes too small to play D1 and a couple steps slow to boot. I'm sure he's a great kid and of course I want to land McNeil but if he was that good every team competing for McNeil would have offered. Furthermore, it's telling that D2 teams haven't offered either.

I think he'll be offered a preferred walk-on spot and then he'll have to (and I hope he does) earn that schollie in practice.

p.s. Brewster has shown if you play hard it's do-able, it only took Mike Rallis a month.

I think what is working against him is he is very small for division 1 football. However, he could always be used as a kick/punt returner and a backup DB.

Other "small" pros...

Steve Smith 5-9 185

Santana Moss 5-10 200

Darren Sproles 5-6 181

There are countless more but the point is if the kid puts some muscle on (which he would) he could be a great player.

My guess is the difference between Sonie and these three is that Smith, Moss, and Sproles are all so fast they can turn off the light switch and be in bed before the room is dark.

Seriously, good points on why to offer Sonie or at least give him preferred walk-on status. It will speak volumes to other Minnesota kids.

Sonie is definately hurt by his size but speed is not an issue with him, I think his situation won't be resolved until late when we see who else commits and how many sports are left.

Sonie is TINY. He has very quick feet, but he doesn't have great speed. He's a very good Minnesota HS football player, but he isn't someone the Gophers should offer. He's smaller and slower than Ryan Collado. What are they going to do with him?

Haven't you seen the Sportscenter commercial? Steve Smith has incendiary speed.

We could add Antoine Winfield, Bob Sanders, Jamar Fletcher, or even Jim Leonhard as undersized defensive backs that thrived in the Big 10. Either you can play or you can’t, and this kid can play. If you haven’t seen him, judge for yourself.

Either “the borders are closed” or they really aren’t. This Mr. Football Award Winner would give them a versatile playmaker (which they don’t exactly have an over abundance of) and would send the message that if you thrive and achieve as a Minnesota high school football player, you will get a shot here in your home state. Sign him and keep telling him he’s too small; he’s better with that chip on his shoulder.

Oh, and Costa Rican Gopher:
Sonie…..ACT Score…..GOOD!

I think the PR stuff is being overblown. Brewster is doing fine recruiting Minnesota regardless of whether we land McNeal or not. It isn't like Iowa or Wisconsin is gonna get him.

The issue isn't his height. There's plenty of examples of quality football players that are short. What the issue is is his overall talent. Granted I've never seen this guy play before, but I'm assuming a number of scouts in the area have come to watch him play and were not overwhelmed by what they saw. If our scouts thought he had the talent to make it in the big10 then we'd have offered him already. I know that scouts over look people on occasion, but most of the time they get it right.
