Go Gophers!!

For anyone who's wondering, this is an example of a reputable organization considering fair and reasonable punishments that actually have something to do with the infractions at hand and actually punish the responsible party. I know it's nearly impossible to conceive, but it can happen.

Sandusky, Curley, Schultz, and Spanier?

The University, as their employer, is responsible for their actions and often bears the consequences of those actions. There are volumes and volumes of precedent in these matters. The NCAA making it up as it goes along and punishing the wrong people for actions they didn't commit is basically the polar opposite.

And yet handled the correct way in the eyes of the majority. A side which I consider myself on.

Just because there is precedence doesn't mean it isn't basically the same. Honestly, how does an Academic Accredation Institution punish a University for something that did not involve Academics in any possible way? I actually think they have less of a right to punish on this issue than the NCAA. And I would be willing to bet they don't have a specific clause that covers this, but it's covered by a generic ethics clause, JUST LIKE THE NCAA!

As soon as the President of PSU signed off on the punishment it was an acknowledgement by PSU that the NCAA did indeed have the authority to punish. And the fact the Board of Regents is voting to ratify the sanctions further acknowledges that fact (otherwise they'd be voting to renounce them). Yes, they are choosing not to fight so as not to risk getting even harsher sanctions (death penalty), but if they truly felt the NCAA was overstepping their authority they would have not signed off and fought any punishment in court.

Actually, that's exactly what it means.

Many employees of a University, certainly the President at least, are educators by definition. Educators and their integrity by definition fall under the auspices of an accreditation agency.

I actually think they have less of a right to punish on this issue than the NCAA.

Laughable.

And I would be willing to bet they don't have a specific clause that covers this

I'm quite certain they have a specific clause that allows them to remove the accreditation of an institution for violating the law, let alone serious and repeated violations involving the endangerment of children. That's so simple as to be obvious.

As soon as the President of PSU signed off on the punishment it was an acknowledgement by PSU that the NCAA did indeed have the authority to punish.

You mean an NCAA member cowered to the whims of the NCAA President? Naw, I can't imagine that.

And the fact the Board of Regents is voting to ratify the sanctions further acknowledges that fact (otherwise they'd be voting to renounce them).

Or it could be because the NCAA, like the gangsters they are, told PSU that they'd go back on the initial punishment and institute a 4-year death penalty if they took it to court. You know, because it's not about punishment and it's all about "changing the culture".

Yes, they are choosing not to fight so as not to risk getting even harsher sanctions (death penalty), but if they truly felt the NCAA was overstepping their authority they would have not signed off and fought any punishment in court.

You are invalidating your own point.

Is anyone else getting ads for Penn St gear on Gopherhole?

So,it is ok to molest children on campus property as long as your football team wins. New promotion for Penn State fans bring your son to "take one for the team". Why not? It is unfair that we are being punished, he was only buggering orphans? Offer your first born, and clink your glass at every touchdown. These fans do not get it.

No More “Sweet Caroline” at Penn State Games Due to “Touching You” Lyrics

Penn State fans have been singing Neil Diamond for years. At every home game, Nittany Lion fans belt out the lyrics to Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” a tradition popularized at Boston’s Fenway Park. This season, though, Penn State fans will have to do without their ba-ba-ba-ing and “so good”‘s to themselves now that the school has announced it will no longer play the 1969 classic during the games. University officials decided that, in wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, it’s probably a bad idea to have 100,000 Penn Staters on television singing “touching me, touching you."

There is a difference between being inspired by something and being ABOUT something.

SI: Penn State reports almost $17M in Sandusky costs

Penn State's costs for legal fees, consultants and public relations firms hired to help deal with the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal have reached nearly $17 million.

The university said it has spent almost $16.8 million through June 30.

Nearly $10 million of that went to seven firms for what Penn State calls internal investigation and crisis communications. Nearly $4 million went for university legal services and defense.

The university is also facing lawsuits from Sandusky's accusers while the NCAA leveled a $60 million fine against the school in July.

The school says the costs for the legal defense and public relations are not paid by student tuition, taxpayer funds or donations. It says the costs will be covered by insurance policies or interest payments on loans it makes.

This is where the ridiculous sets in. "Sweet Caroline" is simply a song and I'm sure Neil Diamond will be shocked to learn that the song he wrote is about pedophilia. Let the people sing if they want to.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit Paterno had them play that song before he fingered those young boys. I hope he rots in hell. There's no way any PSU grad should be allowed around children. I wanted them to get the death penalty, but it is almost better that they didn't as that group of pedophiles has to watch a 2-10 football team.

Oh yeah, remember when they were pissed off at Goldy for mimicking their player praying? Doesn't look so bad now, compared to Paterno raping boys.

None of your posts are ever funny, but this one is especially not funny. Go back and work on your material.

I found it more ironic that they played "Power" by Kanye West.

One of the lyrics is "No one man should have all that power."

I don't know how shocked he would be. The inspiration behind the song was an 11-year-old Caroline Kennedy.
